my oversized bar is much less comfortable, although it might be in my head. i remember the standard size one to be less harsh and damping vibrations much better. (road bars, new one is cube/syntace, don't remember the old one)

I guess it depends on the bar/stem combo. I will say that there are many, many more choices of varying comfort level available in the 31.8mm size available today than the old 26mm configuration. Thanks for commenting!
