My Saab 9-3 does all of the filming work for the channel, with thousands of miles being driven every year it's always good to take a moment to see how the car's running, They're not exactly new cars and over time, parts wear out...
In this case, the car has done over 126,000 miles and is 17 years old! That's borderline classic car surely. The question, therefore, is how much power has been lost over the cars lifetime? Surely it's not running as good as new. Or is it... maybe even better? Let's find out...

Did you know a good horse has up to something like 15 hp, so really 148hp is actually 2,220hp, so it turns out that you do indeed have a rocket ship. This may explain somewhat how you get round so many motorways like you do. Zooooom. Sweeeeet, Aweeeesome.

They both produce proper power but the Sportwagon delivers it better, nicely run in and strong as an ox yet sips nectar like a butterfly. Annoys the shit out of "faster" cars anyway. I've got the same engine in my 2011 Alfa Giulietta and that is fit as a butchers dog at 155k miles - needs a clutch though, starts slipping north of naughty. Had them for years and none cost more than 32k and cost buttons to run (try £155 a year for insurance and 65 mpg on the Alfa).

Depending how you measure the transmission losses, the calibration of the dyno you can easily alter the “engine” power…however there’s no reason why a diesel engine after 100k in good order without a DPF etc shouldn’t still make good power.
Also depending on how the dyno works out the losses (coasted down after each run or a fix figure) you get more power on subsequent runs due to bearings heating up etc and the drag reducing

I have an theory that it's engine management system is capped for environmental / fuel / maintenance costs, and longevity; that it could originally do more, but it is deliberately de-rated by design to guarantee the numbers. You could probably hack the torque curve, but it would cost more to run, and wear it's parts out faster. And then you need a new car.
*EDIT* Also it's a diesel, so it won't rev much higher to give HP. But it does have the torque advantage over petrol.
