SPOILER I barelly remember but the curse you talk about in 5:07 , is mentioned in one of the writtings of the original PS2 Odin Sphere. If I'm not mistaken, was Velvet's mother (or someone else from this royal familly, but i think it was her) who put that "curse" in their people/servants, to save them from the first Cauldron's activation; because the Puukas are inmortals (can't remember if it's in the absolute, or just the age meaning; reason why Cornelius and Velvet can take the promised coin from Alice). Like this, they could escape the terrible destiny their king (Velvet's Grandfather) put over their heads... With the spell, they dig their city underground (where they're living at that moment, and we eat A LOT in the game), and from there, they try to gather all the coins to be humans again. I know it's not 100% accurate (or well written, sorry about that), but I think you get the main idea. PS: Thanks for this, and EVERY other video of yours: they make my day, always!
Clemps Hoi mate, I'm not sure if you've heard of this game or if it's your cup of tea but I personally found it quite interesting. It's called Lost Dimension, while gameplay may not be the best, it's still entertaining enough to keep you going through the story. Give it a look, maybe investigate a bit, on ps vita and ps3.
If you're interested in Vanillaware's older games, you should try Grim Grimoire. It's a rather underappreciated old PS2 game, a side-view RTS set in a Harry Potter-esque universe. It's been available as a PS2 classic in NA for a while now, not sure about Europe though.
To me, the real triumph of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is that Vanillaware took a PS2 game with tragically repetitive gameplay, realized its flaws, and did everything in their power to do the game justice on a current-generation console. On the PS2, the alchemy system was different, each character went through the exact same stages as the others, keys didn't exist, the entire goddamn skills system didn't exist, and each character had pretty much the same 7 spells or so (with a few exceptions) given in a different order depending on which one you were playing. The amount of effort they put into this remake feels like more than most developers put into their flagship titles. It's refreshing to find a game made by a group of people who just want to make a good game great, and just love old school gaming in general.
I bought this game right after you announced you planned to do a video on it because usually your taste in games is pretty neat. After I finished it had become one of my favourites and I couldn't wait for the video you promised. SO thanks for introducing me to the game and also thanks for this fantastic vid!
@@retr0cynik480 LOL my friend who I loaned the game, loved Mercedes the most, and was so pissed she was the only character that didn't get a happy ending. I told her there was another secret ending if she got the Coins, and so she did that and got even more pissed when Cornelius and Skarlet also got a happy ending. I was so happy she liked this game, as she doesn't usually go for action games like this, but the art style really pulled her in. I wish more people would play this game, Atlus/Sony really did a disservice to Vanillaware by not promoting this game more. Both PS2 and Remake.
And even better, exclusive to Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, we get a picture of Ingway in the Underworld laying next to the roots of the tree that Mercedes became, so, they’re still able to be together, even in death.
Vanillaware is so underrated, glad you made a video covering this. Muramasa is a MUST play if you have even the slightest interest in samurai stuff. The art, character and level design is godlike and the combat is really fast paced and satisfying. My favorite game on the Vita and definitely my favorite by Vanillaware.
I really thought this game had more to do with Norse mythology and I was really excited about that. it's strange that the last mission is called Armageddon and not Ragnarok
It feel great to finally watch your passion project in its final stage, and the most enjoyable part is that it's Odin Sphere, one of my favorites! Your video gave Odin Sphere the respect it deserves, and thanks to your charismatic showmanship, you were able to convey a 1:1 feeling to the viewers on why this underrated gem *deserves* to not be lookover. Great job, Clemps! From what I heard in your Q&A from twitter. You read every comment on youtube, which I envy your thick skin as there is a lot of assholes on the web. But just remember, you got people who support you, people who will cheer you on from the sidelines, just because we enjoy your work with unconditional excitement! As for me, I'm a cheapo so I can only give you $4 bucks per a video, hopefully, that should suffice your working environment needs. Anyways, have a nice day and take care, Clemps! ;D
Because of your dedication to informing the new rabble brought in by Nier Automata, I decided to buy a PS2 just so I could play Drakengard 1 and support Yoko Taro, and in another way, you, Mr. Clemps. Now I'll have to add Odin Sphere to that collection as well. I hope I can get your blessing (and others' as well) in tackling and hopefully cherishing them in the end. EDIT: Thank you sincerely, my good man. Also, if my PS4 disc reader wasn't broken, I'd definitely buy Leifthrasir. That being said, if I like the original enough to play it again, I wouldn't mind buying the newest version afterwards.
Be careful not to play Leifthrasir before the original. Once you get a taste of Leifthrasir's combat, the original Odin Sphere's will feel like a wet noodle.
I came back to this video just to say that it made me get the game and fucking loved it, seriously it became one of my favorite games really quickly! Thanks for covering this game so I could find a new unexpected favorite 😁💚
I'm so happy someone looked into this hidden gem. Odin Sphere was my Summer 2016; I bought it thanks to a review that let me know about this. And, I have to say, I loved everything about this game: setting, story and characters are way better than it seems and the art direction is "pleasently sublime". While gameplay, as well as other mechanics, is overall well fitted in the story and has never annoyed me at all. Sound matches greatly with everything and on PS4, and this deserves an applause, this masterpiece runs at 60 FPS. To my dismay, Odin Sphere hasn't got so popular so far, so Clemps, you're doing perfectly in your work: Vanillaware must be recognized for its work and your channel too. You're one fucking good reviewer of niche-titles and I'm hella satisfied with everything you do. I wish you only the best. Hype for the next Vanillaware title.
Clemps : "You control alot of royalty in this game com to think of it..." Gwendolyn - Princess of Ragnanival Cornelius - Prince of Ttiania Mercedes - Princess and later Queen of Ringford Oswald - Lost prince...The son of the previous king of Titania...King Gallon Velvet - Princess of Valentine So...Yeah. Everyone are of royal blood.
I wasn't a fan of Muramasa and thought Dragon's Crown felt tedious to play after a few hours, but I fell in love with Odin Sphere. The plot, gameplay, graphics were all perfect. When the gameplay started to feel repetitive, the interesting plot kicked in to keep me going.
I played the original one when it first came out and I loved it but than Leifthrasir came years after and I teared up a little bit at how masterfully Vanillaware improved an already good game into an unbelievably perfect one. Although I'm not a fan of remakes of games that imo don't need a refresh but Odin Sphere indeed needed it because Leifthrasir showed me how much potential the original was holding in secret and Vanillaware knew that and took their time - seriously took their time - to polish and polish and polish Odin Sphere to the fullest. I'm still in awe at what a great job they did with the remake. Besides Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is my favorite Remake out there. Btw, my favorite arc was Mercedes too! :)
First Drakengard 1, now this. You have a knack for getting me to want to seek out these games. Still haven't gotten a hold of Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, but I will eventually. Seems to be quite an epic journey to get a hold of a physical copy. Thank you so much for the quality content, and I look forward to the next video.
Mercedes is great. Starts off naive and bratty, but by the end she's fit to be queen, and is even holding Odin's life in her hands at one point. I really, really need to get Leifthrasir. I only played the original.
Man, her story ending is even worse than the canon one if you choose her to fight Ingway in Armageddon. I T I S W O R S E T H A N H E R F I N D I N G H I S C A R C A S S
I already own a vita copy of this game, this review just made it shoot up my list of priorities. I had played a demo and knew I would like it but there's just so much here that feels wonderful. I especially love the spacial relativity map feature that shows what you can see on screen as well as things off screen, I would daresay that is a 2d design element that should be used by many MANY more games. Imagine playing 2D sonic with something like that where you actually have some level of anticipation for upcoming map features it would completely change the game and how people interact with it.
This likely didn't get the attention it deserved because of the original. You can choose to play it on the main menu and it is VERY different. In the original, Gwendolyn was the slowest character, the Odette fight had gamebreaking slowdown bugs, combat was WAAAAAAAY slower and simpler and it was just...VERY clunky and different. It was also Vanillaware's first game as Vanillaware. Pretty much everyone who likes Vanillaware already played through a worse version of the game and didn't feel like doing it again. That said, the little girl with the books and cat? Yup, that setup was in Princess Crown as well! Also used bookmarks as save slots. It was hella cute.
Odin Sphere, alongside Valkyrie Profile 2 and Tales of the Abyss, were my favorite PS2 era RPGs. It really bums me out that VP2 is the only one left that hasn't been ported/remastered somewhere else.
That extra window that shows where enemies are outside of your screen? Brilliant! It's so simple, and yet so genius. I love sidescrolling Metroid-vania games but I hate how bosses can blindside you due to limited visibility. This is a fantastic idea!
This was an awesome remake, it fixed so many problems of the original and added enough new stuff to surprise fans of the original. Though, it has to be said, the new combat mechanics make the game a bit easier than the original (though the new combat mechanics are way more fun). They did include the option to play classic style though so that's pretty spiffy.
Thank you for introducing me to this awesome company! I love hearing about smaller and more unpopular games from you and you are increasingly becoming my favourite gaming youtuber!
I only ever saw still images of this game in publications, and never knew the developers were the same ones who made Dragon's Crown. No one ever told me this was a beat em' up, literally my favorite genre. Thanks for selling me this game, I even sprung for the special edition with a shirt I can't wear, so you've made two people happy. Thanks!
I find your analyses and self-depractory humour to be my favourite of any youtuber currently. Not to mention your content is 100% in-line with my own. Keep it up!
So I have this thing I like to call my Chosen 30 video games. Its basically my top 30 games of all time that I would consider 10/10 even if others would disagree, but I'm struggling to find the last game to complete my list (having a revolving door for the #30 spot) I mostly love jrpgs (played them all) even picked this up on ps2 back in the day but couldn't get into it... Your review of the PS4 version however has convinced me to give Odin Sphere, another shot. Thanks bud
Just beaten the game toady, after a seven hour binge. Everything you said was on point, and I really enjoyed it. Just need two more trophies until I get my platinum.
Played this game all the way through (finished it today) and I must say...best purchase I've made since Nier: Automata! That last scene was so heartbreaking because each character got me so invested and I'm going to miss them. Thanks for bringing this game to mine and other's attention. Each game you recommend leaves me with such a complete feeling. That's why I'm a patron. You are a legend, please keep up the good work and I wish you well.
Love Odin Sphere and I also love Dragon's Crown. I really wish Muramasa Rebirth could be brought to the PS4 so I can finally play it because that looks like it might become my favorite Vanillaware game once I get to experience it.
That would be very interesting to see. Cool series from what I saw, and seems right up his alley if he chooses to or already has played them. Also, hello again, Russell :)
Clemps, you are an amazing entertainer and have such powerful insights into these games and their story and characters. I love you and everything you put out man, You are an inspiration to me and I hope to keep seeing your quality content on my news feed! thank you so much for your work. Cheers!
-Oh hey a channel I haven't seen before covering something I positively adored *sees all the series in the opening* A man of taste, I see -excellent video Ok, GG sub earned
One job, Clemps. Your first vanillaware game review, and you only foodwanked the raw ingredients and not the sheer library of cuisine these master bunnyfolk can cook up. ONE. JOB. >non-canon bad ending cough. I have bad news for you Clemps.....that happens in the good ending too. Notice how it happens in a completely different location from the main characters? As for the character order, it was really about picking the least bad option. Velvet is not only the slowest, but is the hardest to use, requires deep understanding of game mechanics like potions and efficient phozon use, and is the most critical for the latter parts of the plot. It would be great if her rope swing happened a bit faster or auto-targetted exits, but we take what we can get.
I can listen to that game OST for hours, so i'm fine with him using songs from that game in pretty much every video (at least in the ones i've seen so far).
Another great video Clemps! You actually inspired me to go get this and I'm now doing a blind playthrough on Twitch! Not sure if I'm breaking any rules by adding a link if others want to watch...
9 and a half minutes. That's how long it took me to place that the music was from Final Fantasy 12. Good stuff! I've wanted to try this game for a long time, Now that I've seen more of it here i only want to play it more.
Huh. Had my eye on this one for a little while, especially since I got to try out the demo. Your introduction to Nier: Automata was a seriously worthwhile time sink for me, so I'll really have to grab this one when it drops to my price range. Great video Clempsy!
Yes! I was so happy when they released this! Finally a game that deserves the remake it gets. Visually my favourite game of all time and one of my favourite games of all time. Sadly, I don't think they've made any game quite equal or surpassing Odin's Sphere. From what I've seen, Muramasa comes pretty close, but I haven't played it, since I don't own a Vita.
Just imagine if the made a Metroidvania or if Konami sold the rights of Castlevania to them. And with the help of Ayami Kojima the artist of Castlevania symphony of the night would probably be the best looking Metroidvania game ever.
Odin Sphere was my first Vanillaware game, I really liked it, even if there was a lot of bad about the combat system. But for those that didn't or those playing for the first time, Leifthrasir's combat changes really fixed the combat. i think their reasoning for the character order is Mercedes is the most technical character of the bunch and Oswald is pretty technical too. Dragon's Crown was my next, really love the Amazon. I didn't play Muramasa until the Vita version, it was so good. But damn, did Fury mode hurt my hands so bad.
Kinda regretting not grabbing any Vanillaware games when they were on sale or even on the PS Plus freebies. Thanks for opening my eyes to their games Clemps :)
Love this game. They improved the combat over the PS2 version so much too. Only played a little bit of that one, but I bounced off it almost immediately because of how clunky and awkward it was. This version is a huge improvement. Another great thing about this game though, is if you want to play the game in its original state, but with the awesome new graphics, you can totally do that too. They improved the feel of the combat so much that I would never bother with that mode myself, but it's great that it's there for the sake of preservation at least.
The PS2 version of Odin Sphere was incredibly depressing. It was the same amazing game but the hardware just couldn't support what the game wanted to do. Slow Down was so bad in certain boss fights (particularly Odette) that the game slowed to an absolute crawl. Like full seconds between frames. I'm not a frame rate guy, I usually can't tell the difference between 30/60 FPS but this was abominable to play for those sections. I am so pleased it finally got the remake it deserves
I picked up this game a few days after it came out last year. Along with Doom it is one of the best games I played in 2016, and I really consider it to be one of, if not the best, side scrolling beat em ups I have ever played.
I've been trying beat the PS2 release on-and-off for years (I'm at Titania with Velvet) but now that this came out looking as good as it does.....I kinda want to just jump to the rereleased
azurewolf7 I don't think so as PC games don't sell that well in Japan, but Atlus is property of Sega and Sega did declare that is aiming to release it's properties on PC to increase the presence in western markets, Vanillaware games are published by Atlus, so maybe it could happen in the future as japanese companies are aiming to expand more.
Thank you all for your patience!!

Gwendolyn has daddy issues
apparently every character with that name has daddy issues.
Moe Thuta The same can be said for most characters in this game.

100% gonna become a Patron for you, mate. Informative, personal, funny and honest. Always a pleasure!
OMG NEW CLEMPPPSSS VIDDEEOO!!! YOU FIND THE GEMS, I loved Muramasa, I'm definitely shellin out for this game!
My dude, you have one of the best intros I've ever seen, this and RelaxAlax's intros just get me pumped for guudo ass content
Holy shit Clemps, thank you so much for indroducing me to this game. Just finished it, it was absolutely brilliant.
Love Odin Sphere and I also love Dragon's Crown. I really wish Muramasa Rebirth could be brought to the PS4 so I can finally play it because that looks like it might become my favorite Vanillaware game once I get to experience it.
Analysis of No More Heroes? (It'd honestly be more for the symbolism, but it'd still be cool)
That would be very interesting to see. Cool series from what I saw, and seems right up his alley if he chooses to or already has played them.
Also, hello again, Russell :)
symbolism?
*saves game taking a pooopooo*
love nmh XD
The title alone earns you a like sir. Odin’s Sphere is awesome. Only wish I found this video sooner.
Clemps, you are an amazing entertainer and have such powerful insights into these games and their story and characters. I love you and everything you put out man, You are an inspiration to me and I hope to keep seeing your quality content on my news feed! thank you so much for your work. Cheers!
Aaaand now I need to watch a playthrough of this. Great job Clemps!
I've been contemplating getting this game for a couple months.
I now put this on my wishlist. Can't wait to play it soon.
-Oh hey a channel I haven't seen before covering something I positively adored
*sees all the series in the opening*
A man of taste, I see
-excellent video
Ok, GG sub earned
One job, Clemps. Your first vanillaware game review, and you only foodwanked the raw ingredients and not the sheer library of cuisine these master bunnyfolk can cook up. ONE. JOB.
>non-canon bad ending
cough.
It would be great if her rope swing happened a bit faster or auto-targetted exits, but we take what we can get.
jesus christ clemps the amount of subcribers you have is completely criminal, the quality of you vids are so good!
hope you keep posting vids man! :D
*Looks at the description
FINAL FANTASY 9 MUSIC
AGAIN
CLEMPS FOR FUCKS SAKE
Your suffering fuels him.
I can listen to that game OST for hours, so i'm fine with him using songs from that game in pretty much every video (at least in the ones i've seen so far).
J he really needs to make a ff9 video already lmao
Another great video Clemps! You actually inspired me to go get this and I'm now doing a blind playthrough on Twitch! Not sure if I'm breaking any rules by adding a link if others want to watch...
9 and a half minutes. That's how long it took me to place that the music was from Final Fantasy 12. Good stuff!
I've wanted to try this game for a long time, Now that I've seen more of it here i only want to play it more.
I'm so stoked you made a new video! Definitely backing you on Patrion for more :)
Love the Final Fantasy 12 music you tossed in
You da best clemps. Always a pleasure to enjoy your work. Good luck on that patreon you deserve it everything it gives you and more
Huh. Had my eye on this one for a little while, especially since I got to try out the demo. Your introduction to Nier: Automata was a seriously worthwhile time sink for me, so I'll really have to grab this one when it drops to my price range. Great video Clempsy!
Thanks for that. This game was on my mental to-buy list, which seemed to have vanished, so thanks for reminding me to get this, now that I own a PS4.
Cornelius is Sparkster, Oswald is Guts, Gwendolyn is Aigis, Velvet is Rukia and Mercedes is Wasp who's actually useful.
Fun coinkidink, that is the exact same history with vanillaware that i had! The Vita is such an underrated system.
Well worth the wait as always Clemps, KEEP IT UP!
cheers from brazil, NEW CLEMPS! nice.
Daddy Clemps back at it again with the quality
Look at you playing all of my childhood's and teenage's favourite games 😭😭
It's been a while since I needed a game so much.
Thanks Clemps
Another excellent video! Keep up the great work.
Huh, I discovered this video exactly two years after it came out. Cool.
What a cheeky game to play.
Thanks for the video clemps, have a good one.
Skaldi the floating fuckboy got you a new sub.
I love this game and I'm glad to see others enjoy it too
Genius ! 😎
I will play this game now, thank you
Dragon's Crown fuck yeah. I love playing 4 player couch coop with my buddies.
Kinda regretting not grabbing any Vanillaware games when they were on sale or even on the PS Plus freebies. Thanks for opening my eyes to their games Clemps :)
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS IS HYPE MAN, I'm playing this game for the first time on the PS3
Thank you thank you thank you no one talks about this amazing game thank you
YES, I've never clicked on a video this fast
I love this game ,I wish I had the chance to actually finish it ❤️
Tremble before the might and girth of the all powerfull, all knowing, MELVIN!
They improved the feel of the combat so much that I would never bother with that mode myself, but it's great that it's there for the sake of preservation at least.
another quality video.
please keep it up and maybe someday we'll get the rubber off...
I played this one the PS2 when I came out and of course "What Skill tree?!?!" popped into my mind. lol
gloriois look at Odin sphere the attention it deserves ^_^
always good to remind people the demo exists to try it ouf
The PS2 version of Odin Sphere was incredibly depressing. It was the same amazing game but the hardware just couldn't support what the game wanted to do. Slow Down was so bad in certain boss fights (particularly Odette) that the game slowed to an absolute crawl. Like full seconds between frames. I'm not a frame rate guy, I usually can't tell the difference between 30/60 FPS but this was abominable to play for those sections. I am so pleased it finally got the remake it deserves
Game looks interesting. I'll have to pick it up thanks for the recommendation
Any chance you might review Legend of Dragoon?
Woah 13 Sentinels was in development A LONG TIME huh
I picked up this game a few days after it came out last year. Along with Doom it is one of the best games I played in 2016, and I really consider it to be one of, if not the best, side scrolling beat em ups I have ever played.
Yeah boy, you've hit the perfect funny/factual ratio!
Haha that FF12 ost as background music, good choice.
I know I already said this but I like you and your videos are perfectly balanced
I've been trying beat the PS2 release on-and-off for years (I'm at Titania with Velvet) but now that this came out looking as good as it does.....I kinda want to just jump to the rereleased
HELL YEAH CLEMPS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MY MAN
Oh mighty Clemps is there any hope we'll get this game,Oboro Muramasa and Dragon's Crown on Steam?
azurewolf7 I don't think so as PC games don't sell that well in Japan, but Atlus is property of Sega and Sega did declare that is aiming to release it's properties on PC to increase the presence in western markets, Vanillaware games are published by Atlus, so maybe it could happen in the future as japanese companies are aiming to expand more.
You deserve a bigger fan base damnit
