Skim coating a plaster wall like a pro

  • A wall in our home was covered with what appeared to be mirrors. It was plastic with a silver paper backing. Taking it off was pretty easy, but the glue took chunks of the plaster with it. The gentleman in this video makes skim coating look easy. Enjoy an artist at work.
    Update: Some have asked what he was using, so I finally gave him a call to ask. For this first layer in the video he was using a combination of drywall compound (80%) and moulding plaster (20%). He often uses more moulding plaster but advised that the more moulding plaster you use the less time you have before it sets.

    This video was beautiful. Why? Not just the mastery behind his skill but rather seeing his age and working with his wife as well. Thank you so much for sharing this. Reminds me a lot of my father's works - I wish I could have seen him reach this age. Thank you so much for this warm and handy video.

    I have watched this so many times. It's like ASMR for me as a homeowner. This man is so skilled! The way he makes it look so easy is proof of his technique and experience. And his wife!! My goodness... this is just the best! I've skim coated two rooms in my house so far and this magic video keeps inspiring me to do more.

    I really enjoyed the husband/wife team work. At their age it really says a lot about the older generation and what it means to truly be a team. It is really nice to see how people used to be so hard working without complaining. Very rare these days. Not to mention looks like he has been doing this for a while. Great Video!

      @pokerslowwww 9 років тому +2

      No harm to everyone but he has only coated the wall which is impressive for his age however wall has to set and be troweled in. Depending on material it will need around 3 rubs to get a good finish. I am not dissing his work as i said but plastering aint that easy folks. 15 year old pro with bad back and shoulder :)

      Sorry but he needed to say that before plaster you have to apply fixative sealant because otherwise the plaster does not remain attached correctly and firm to the wall. For me that I am righthand it is better to apply the plaster from right to left, so denser the arm. Like a pro ??

    4 minutes what would take me 4 hours with a lot of swearing and frustration. Seems to me the trick is a good clean flat tool and time honoured beautifully honed technique. He minimally goes back on what he's done which is what I always do in droves. He applies just the right pressure and lift so has no lines and an even coat that he can 'feel'. Its as good as the Bolshoi Ballet.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed 7 років тому

      Exactly, minimum effort for max effectiveness.
      It's like watching really effecting home painters, where the ease of the brush and the 'feel' of the fluid material putting on a totally solid even coat with no runs is completely learned in the movements.

    hah, well done old man! i'm not a pro, but i learned alot from you when i got my apartment. the walls were painted a million times and had crazy drip textures. i was stupid and rented a giant porter cable drywall sander, but that didnt work. i eventually used a trowel with a compound/plaster/water mix where i made it fairly liquidy coat. then my second coat was ultra thin, with a knife, for an awesome glass glaze look.
    that shirt is filled with sweat. if you dont get that, then you're not doing the skim coating right.
