  • We trace the evolution of dinosaur effects in the "Jurassic" movies, from the Tyrannosaurus rex in the paddock scene from "Jurassic Park" (1993) to the feathered dinosaurs and Giganotosaurus introduced in "Jurassic World: Dominion" (2022).
    We spoke to legends like Dennis Muren, who was in charge of Industrial Light & Magic's full-motion CG dinosaurs for "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997), and Phil Tippett, the pioneering stop-motion artist behind Tippett Studios and dinosaur supervisor on "Jurassic Park."
    Jean Bolte, a texture artist at ILM, shares what it was like to witness the initial CG T. rex tests, which were so groundbreaking they convinced Steven Spielberg to go the digital route for his dinosaurs. Matt Winston, cofounder of Stan Winston School and a puppeteer on the original "Jurassic Park," breaks down the revolutionary mold-making process and hydraulic technology used on the T. rex animatronic in that film and explains why his father, Stan Winston, favored a variety of practical and digital techniques to convince audiences the "Jurassic" dinosaurs were real.
    Howie Weed, a digital effects artist on "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," and Jon Alexander, the compositing supervisor on that film, discuss the techniques used to bring the chicken-sized Compys to life.
    "Jurassic Park III" (2001) director Joe Johnston explains how his team engineered the climactic battle between the Spinosaurus and T. rex, while Matt sheds light on the process of sculpting and assembling the Spinosaurus puppet for that film, the largest animatronic ever made for a movie.
    Finally, Neal Scanlan, the creature effects supervisor on "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" (2018), and David Vickery, the VFX supervisor on "Fallen Kingdom" and "Dominion," tell us how they brought the franchise's creatures into the modern day with innovative techniques in both the physical and digital worlds. Neal describes how "Fallen Kingdom" expanded the role of practical creature effects, including the variety of partial animatronics his team created for the Indoraptor, a new fictional species introduced in the film. And David, coming off "Jurassic World: Dominion," shares the 'digital archaeology' process that his team used to restore the model of the T. rex from earlier films, the Quill software ILM's engineers built in order to give the dinosaurs feathers, and how the VFX team worked with John Nolan's animatronics team to give birth to complex creatures like the Giganotosaurus.
    "Jurassic World: Dominion" is now playing in theaters.

      Everything aside from the cg shots from far enough back, like the brachiosaurus shot at the very beginning and the herd and t-rex eating the herd. Those shots need updated with better lighting and textures (those textures were matched or surpassed in real time in xbox 360 games a decade ago, again in real time). That last scene with the Rex saving the day in Jurassic Park was totally unexpected when I first saw it. I'm glad Spielberg added that scene.
    The first move had some things that didn't make sense but it's still the best movie out of all the others.

    • @Parker--
      @Parker-- Рік тому +5

      That scene really doesn’t make sense at all lol. How did it even squeeze through the doors and how did Grant not see it towering over the raptor? It’s one of the best scenes in movie history but it’s also one of the most nonsensical. Jurassic Park is legitimately a top 15 movie of all time if not top 10 and I don’t understand how anyone could disagree with that.

    • @hellegennes
      @hellegennes Рік тому +4

      @@Parker-- Yeah, it doesn't make sense from the perspective of the heroes. Just because it's off screen doesn't mean THEY can't see it. But it is a bit of artistic licence. It's not that great of an offender when it comes to plot holes. The plot holes of the rest of the films, starting even with JP2 are much more ludicrous. For example, that film doesn't even try to explain how a T-Rex killed all the boat crew and then got back in its room and locked itself in. There's a missing scene showing raptors escaping from the boat, but since they cut it from the final film, it leaves a huge plot hole.

    Palaeontology fact for those wondering, Spinosaurus and T Rex never would have fought as they are from different eras but if somehow they ever did the Spinosaurus wouldn't have much of a chance. It didn't have enough strength to snap the T Rex's neck like it did in Jurassic Park 3. The Spinosaurus also would not have been this height as it actually has much shorter limbs but only recent discoveries have proven all this as it was relatively unknown back when this movie was filmed. Also, T Rex as we know so far had one of if not the biggest bite force of all land Carnivorous dinosaurs so the scene where he bites the Spinosaurus on the neck it would have completely crushed it in one go! In the movie the Spinosaurus carries on but it wouldn't be able to. One last fact: The Spinosaurus is now proven as more of a semi aquatic dino so it would not have spent much time on land! Very entertaining fight for the movie though :)

    Its sad that the movie industry is moving away from using animatronics, and relaying more on CGI to save money and time.
    The human brain cant connect very good with unusual things, as the over overusage of CGI. But connect a lot better with the use of animatronics, because its "real". Even a combination with animatronics and CGI can work perfectly together, if used correctly.

      @fireaza Рік тому +3

      Saying that CGI is only used "to save money and time" is like saying any building that was built using anything other than hammers and nails, was done to save time and money. Yes, you can use modern building materials and techniques to cut corners and erect some soulless building. However, modern building building materials and techniques and can also be used to create works of art that would be physically impossible to build if you were only using "traditional" materials and techniques.
      Animatronics have their weaknesses and limits. For God's sake, re-watch _Robocop,_ ED-209 moves with zero inertia or weight and jitters all over the place, it looks incredibly fake and really takes you out of the movie. And that movie was made when animatronics were at their peak! It's not a coincidence that movies where animatronic characters had a major role were INCREDIBLY rare in the pre-CGI era. Where as today, we have the likes of Gollum from Lord of the Rings and Caesar from the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy. It's difficult to get an animatronic character to give a convincing, emotive performance when they're incapable of forming proper phonemes shapes with their mouth, their facial expressions are jerky and robotic and their eyes are dead and staring off into nothing.
      CGI and practical effects are just two different tools in the director's toolbox. One is not "better" than the other, nor should one be used to do everything. A skilled director knows which tool is right for the job at hand and makes a decision based on that. Not because they're hoping to impress wannabe film buffs by not using CGI.

Making an entire robotic system for single puppet is beyond of any explanation. These guys are the motivation and biggest inspiration for upcoming artists. Really love what they did. It is great that they are still being used. Anyways, shout out to all their amazing work! I think right now Hollywood is kind of fall asleep, and making mostly too low level, or remake and redo works. It almost stopped being an art that makes world a better place, instead it became source of degrading and moral killing machine.

    I don’t get why people are saying the cgi got worse in the newer movies. The cgi is objectively better than it was in the older movies. It makes more sense to say that the dinosaurs feel more like monsters. The cgi in the newer movies is undeniably better done but it’s probably less convincing because the dinosaurs look like they pose for the camera when they roar and they do things that an animal couldn’t or wouldn’t do. It’s not the cgi that’s worse, it’s how they act.

    Yes, the technology used to produce dinosaurs onscreen has reached incredible heights. Unfortunately, the ability to employ that technology to sell the scene to the audience has atrophied. Lighting, camera work, and the blending of both practical and real effects matter just as much. As the guy from JP1 said: "Keep them guessing." Nowadays, we're seeing way too much of the dinos in the open, in broad daylight, up close. Spielberg was limited by the technology of the time and so he was forced to be conscious of what he could and couldn't get away with. This informed the decision making on whether to use practical or CGI effects. That line continues to be blurred more and more these days, and not just in the Jurassic franchise. As a result, it has become far too easy to just slap some CGI on the screen, to the point to where entire shots look like green screen now. They're alternating less and less between puppets and CGI. It's like they spent so much time wondering if they could, that they never stopped to ask if they should.

      @@atomicvinylreviews3420I agree. Fallen Kingdom IMO had the best blend of animatronics and CGI in a Jurassic World film, Jurassic World has the best CGI and a decent animatronic (an Apatosaurus head), and Dominion's affects range from great (the feathered dinosaurs look nice, even though they aren't practical) to weirdly fake (the Dilophosaurus and Microceratus animatronics are so stiff and lifeless). Blue often doesn't look real at all.
