  • Inkscape step-by-step beginner tutorial on how to create a seamless repeating pattern. Follow along in this Inkscape screen capture showing how to:
    1. Set up Inkscape to make easy repeating vector patterns.
    2. Change the arrow step value to match the size of your base pattern.
    3. Arrange a beautiful hibiscus flower pattern from a vector file.
    4. Set your new pattern for repeatable use in apparel or decor.
    5. Us the Clone Tile tool as a shortcut.
    My goal for this channel is to create a community where we can share graphic design skills, tips and shortcuts with a focus on using free or low cost software and tools available to everyone.

    I tried this, it worked out great! Except that when I tiled it there was a thin line in between each box, it wasn't perfectly flush. Is there a way to fix this?

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  3 роки тому +14

      Great question! It's a known glitch, and it's maddening- at least to me. Logos By Nick has the best explanation and workaround video on his channel. I've found when taking the original (unrepeated) pattern out of Inkscape for use in Photoshop or for products on Redbubble, the seam is gone. Or so it seems.
      In my opinion Inkscape is showing the seam on purpose to represent the separate items. If you zoom in, it goes away for a second and then is rendered back in. Its always the same thickness even when zoomed way in, which tells me it's not part of the vector objects. To test this theory, make a quick box of 4 and export to PNG. Thin lines are gone in the PNG image.
      Or....someone else reading this may experience the seam because stroke was left on for the original square. I'm certain this is not what you mean in this case.

      I had the same issue but I tried unchecking "use antialiasing" you can do that by going to file > document properties > uncheck "use antialiasing" under Display and once I export PNG image, the thin white line disappears. I don't know if this is a perfect fix but it does the work for me. (When you start a new object you have to re-check "use antialiasing", that's just what everyone says, I don't know why.

    Thank you so much . You are great . I was struggling for few months now to get repeating pattern without photoshop and inkscape kept on crashing when I tried to open the pre-existing seamless pattern template. Finally I was able to get it . And yes the final png does not show the lines. You proved to be life saver !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Totally binged/binging your tutorials…you’re a natural teacher. The content you provide is easy to follow, and by the 4-5 tutorial I was able to guess the steps as you were progressing through the content. I have 2 questions…1) I noticed that many of your canvases are 1000x1000 px, for print purposes do these measurements accommodate super-large (wall decal, wall paper, etc..) to small (stickers, t-shirts)? I’ve been using the POD’s recommendation (files in png format). 2) Can you do a tutorial on manipulating text (warped, retro, graffiti, etc)? Thanks so much - Caroline.

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, and great question! One good thing about a vector program like Inkscape is, you can scale the designs you make larger without losing quality. So for large scale POD projects, you can design in a 1000x1000px workspace, but then you'd want to scale the final work larger to the max file size the POD allows or something in their recommended range. Also, I've been playing with a graffiti tutorial for a while now. Still trying to get the steps down, and I'll finish it hopefully sooner than later. Ha.

    Thank you! Re to the little space between patterns, always double check the square dimensions in the box. It may seam silly, but check it. Then I move everything outside the page. I do not set adapt page to object. Group. Export as eps, open with gimp or whatever and it's perfect.

    Awesome tutorials. Thank you. I've never done an image for transfer to POD fabric. Does it matter what size you export? I know 300 dpi, but wondered why you chose 1000px for tutorial

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! The 1000px was for this tutorial to keep the numbers simple. You can customize the page border to fit the recommended dimensions of the POD platform for whatever product you're designing for. Just go to File- Document Properties and you'll see in the pop up menu a place to type in specific dimensions. Hope this helps!

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Рік тому +1

      Great question and there has been a lot of debate on the thin lines that still show. Sounds like its actually to designate separation even its not really there. If you zoom down and down the line scales with the zoom and never goes away. Logos By Nick has a few work arounds on his channel. If you export the pattern to use in the real world or repeat it for POD or something the line goes away and the pattern is seamless.

      No worries! You can File- Save As and save your project to wherever you want on your computer as an SVG file if you want to come back to it and make edits. If you want to save it and use it as a graphic in projects outside of Inkscape, you can do File- Export PNG Image. In the sidebar menu, choose Export Area- Selection, make sure your pattern really is selected, and click on Export As. Name your file, and choose which folder on your computer you want to send it to, and then click Save. Hope this helps!
