It is most likely one of the ball joint ends is either loose or worn out. Check all connection points for tightness, use a mechanics stethoscope or long screwdriver, handle end held up on your ear and flat side end held at each point - control arm, tension arm, steering link to identify which one is the cause. Very common for the tension strut/forward control arm to wear and the front bushing on all BMW models and when they are worn severely they make noise. Good Luck and hope this helps
Came across this video and i had the same exact noise. Mine ended being the underbody metal shield creaking. Removed the shield and sanded down the mounting points and reinstalled everything and no more popping noise.
I had something similar to this noise on my E82. It turned out to be the steering rack bolts being loose which made them "pop" when the steering would be under load.
i have been driving with the sound all this time. i just recently tore down the entire thing. i am still not sure but i think its more likely the cv axle inner joint. so when i replace all those parts i will see if the noise goes away

Hallo, did you find what is causing this noise?
i changed the inner and outer tie rod it not as loud but i still hear it sometimes when backing up
@yardmanmotorworks1759 check your strutmounts. Had same issue and after replacing all 4 (upper and lower on each side) the noise was gone.
Did u ever find out the sound issues
yes i am posting a video about it. it was the inner cv axle
