- This is part 2 of my previous video Saving a dying avocado tree.
Avocado trees are easily killed with overwatering or poor drainage.
This container grown Oro Negro is in big trouble.
Pepe offers some possible ways to rescue the tree.

I have an 8 ft indoor avocado that I watered too much over the winter, and it started to die back. Don't know what I was thinking, but I just bought some of this from your amazon store. Thank you for the help.
Wishing you the best. Hope your tree recovers. Keep us posted and thanks for watching. I will have an update video soon.
I had the same problem with my 20 avocado plants that was grafted two months ago. The grafts were successful, and was growing beautifully. However since last week, the young leaves started wilting and eventually fallen off. I suspected it is root rot. I fully submerged the entire pot (1 gallon) into a 1 liter/1 tea spoon bleach solution for 5 minutes. Then I removed the plant from the pot, poured clean water to remove the bleach, then repotted with a brand new well drained soil. Its been a week now. I can't say this has cured the root rot, but the bleach didn't kill the plant. The plants are still looking as before.
How are your trees doing now?
@@Pepesplants 9 plants are doing well. 2 are kind OK ( they wilt when temp is hot, but looks good in the night). 9 are dead completely. Most of them problem with the graft union. I wouldn't say bleach solution is the cause of death though. I am from a hot tropical region and this is the summer. Not sure heat (plus the unhealthy root) could have caused the death.
I live in Bulgaria. I'm not sure if they sell these kinds of bags here. I have a few avocado trees (all of them are indoors because of the variable weather and witners)
My oldest one is my favourite and most important. But over the last half a year, it's stopped growing. Before I knew it, all the leaves fell off. By the way, the tree is single-stemmed. The top half an inch started turning black, so I pruned the stem by nearly half a foot, again. It stopped. But the blackening got back.
I hadn't seen any signs of new growth until a month ago. The tree started budding. But the bigger buds start dying from their tips and completely die in a week just when they're about to come out. Presently, the tree is budding again from the lower parts of the trunk. A lot of roots, especially on one of the further sides of the pot are missing and replaced the soil with foul odor. The soil retains too much moisture and the drainage holes are too small. Whenever I check the moisture, I use my finger to dig a hole. Sometimes, I come across some worms at or near the bottom of the pot. There are some new roots though on one of the sides. I've never been able to save an avocado tree from root rot if all the leaves had fallen off. Is it too late to save it?
You need to change the soil and treat the roots with the drench. Cold and wet conditions in the soil will kill the tree. Very good draining soil and eradicate the disease. Best of luck.
I have clay soil so I was going to do a raised mound with blocks around it to retain the soil. I really like your idea of using a fabric grow bag. Do you think a tree will do good in a very large grow bag on top of the soil?
I don't know the size or girth of your tree. That being said a grow bag works well. Try a bag labeled 25 gal and see how it does. You might need to use a stake on each seed with a non-abrasive binding, so the trunk is not damaged.
My avocado tree almost died after this winter, while the stem still looks good but it’s all dried in the top, please tell me how to save it.. it’s almost 4 foot tall
Try the suggestions in the video. You may have root rot. The liquid phosphorus should help.
Did you end up having a significant amount of root rot? I just cleaned off the soil of my potted avacado tree and lost a significant amount of roots. My tree is about 4feet; some of the limbs look good, but do you think I should cut them all off as well as cut the main trunk to allow the roots to support the plant as they try to bounce back? Also did you add any root stimulator or citrus fertilizer to the new soil? Thank you.
The root rot was real bad yes. I trimmed the tree quite a bit also. You should consider pruning it so it is less stress on the new roots that will hopefully develop. No fertilizer or root stimulator. I think its better to add the root stimulator later as you see improvement judging by the canopy development.
Great video! Is there a way to save a tree with root rot planted in the ground? My tree is about 6ft tall and has been planted for about 2 years. I’m afraid to dig it out and hit the water root. I thought it recovered from root rot but, I just discovered that the branches are losing leaves again and getting squishy. Is that root rot also?
We are assuming it has the same root rot disease. You could try the same liquid I used. It is systemic and with a few treatments may help. Good luck.
Hello! Thank you for the video. Im headed to the local garden centre and I hope to save my poor avocado trees. I repotted them about 6 months ago but I used cheap/poor draining soil. Ive had them from seed for about 6 years so I'm not willing to let them die!! Is it important to cut off the black/brown roots? Im not sure how much of the root system I can safely trim back or if its ok to leave some of the brown roots in place if im using the anti fungal solution... I'll probably just wing it and hope for the best lol. Anyways I hope the tree of yours is still thriving one year later!! 😊
It is. Will do an update video soon. Use the garden phos and it should help.
Hi Pepe. Question: When there is fungus on leaves is it best to just trim them off or spray fungicide on it? Also, what makes the leaves curl on fruit trees?
Aphids and other insects. Leaf rollers. can cause leaf curl. Copper will control the fungus. Hope that helps.
@@Pepesplants Is it best to cut the leaves off ? What about neem oil spray?
@@aniyahdilovelilioness747 No need to remove the leaves. Neem if used at least once a month can help control fungal diseases. Be careful to spray only about an hour before sunset or leaves could burn in hot sun. Wait two or three weeks before spraying copper. I alternate both.
@@Pepesplants Many 😊 thanks my friend
Did you trim any of the roots when you replanted it?
Only if they are in the pots too long. I usually plant them before they get root bound.
When do you take it out of the bag and replant into the pot?
I will keep it in the bag. Will step up to larger grow bags as needed. Plan to find a spot to plant in the ground sooner or later.
@@Pepesplants oh ok, i cannot do that part i live in canada spring and summer are fine but then it becomes an indoor plant for the fall and winter
Did you water the tree in between the treatments?
Yes but not heavy watering.
@@Pepesplants thank you I just bought two Lila trees from the nursery and the leafs didn’t look so healthy but I just thought it was due to sun, the trunk looked good but when I went to transplant to the ground there was a lot of brown roots that fell off just with the touch I’m going to pull it out of the ground and put in a pot similar in size that it came from and hope I can save this tree before it’s to late if I’m not to late already. The root rot is a spore I’m wondering if boiling water over the soil will kill the fungus with hydrogen peroxide poured in after… I hate to keep throwing my soil as it gets expensive having to keep buying the truck loads of top soil I have 1/2 acre that I’ve been filling with fruit trees and my vegetable plants in beds and pots
It wasn't clear...you poured the Garden Phos solution into the soil too? If so how much?
Answer is at 3:19 in the video 4-5 Tsb per gal as foliar or drench.
@@Pepesplants thank you but do you pour the whole gallon after you do the foliar?
@@SusanSantiago_ I used the whole gal yes.
Did this plant survive?
Yes, I have an update video soon.
What to do when branches of new tree are just falling.off?
Use the garden phos and it should help
@@Pepesplants thanks, I have, and it has continue to die.
@@mirta9441 Sorry to hear that. Did you continue to water it? Best to stop watering for several days after you applied the Garden Phos. Two applications should fix it. IF not then the plant was too far gone.
