    Its weird to hear someone say "High-German" was difficult to understand since High-German is essentially "accent-free" - "slang-free" version of German. But if someone learned German in the south that might explain the difficulty in understanding actual German xD

    • @uliwehner

      Tanner may have thought it was "hochdeutsch" when in fact it may have been thinly veiled Hamburg dialect. the peeps in hamburg definitely do not speak hochdeutsch either.

      As if German spoken in the south was not "actual German". Ugh. For sure that German on the boat tour was not that "high" either, or they would have understood more. After all, all the learning apps are in High German.

      "High" German is standard as taught in Bavarian schools as well. But Bavarians understandably don't want to speak it in private although the majority is well able to speak it. And it is important to maintain dialects in general. Bavarian is almost even more an own language but a mere dialect. And many people in Germany speak some sort of dialect or have some sort of accent. Hamburgers certainly also don't always speak High German. Besides this Hamburg in general is a very interesting city certainly worth visiting.

  • @silverspiked1550

    In northern Germany they mostly speak with an low German accent or Plattdeutsch (German/English Mix up)and in southern Germany they speak high-German. It is topographical (low in the flatlands and high in the Mountains). If you searching for Standard German without accent ->Hannover!

    • @anunearthlychild8569
      @anunearthlychild8569 2 роки тому

      Sorry, that's wrong.
      Platt is only spoken on the seaside of Germany today. In the other parts of Northern Germany the people speak more or less standard German, which is also standard in school all over Germany.
      In Bavaria they speak more or less "bayrisch".
      I think that "High German" is an Error of translation.
      And believe me, people in Hannover and surrounding areas may say they don't have any accent, they have one. On the town maybe only the elders, but in the villages most.

    • @ulie1960
      @ulie1960 2 роки тому +1

      @@anunearthlychild8569 Besides "Plattdeutsch" isn't an accent, it's a language of it's own. And then there are many versions depending on where you are in Northern Germany. On the seaside aka at the North Sea you also have different Frisian areas, and even on the island of Helgoland they have their own language.

    For the boat tours there are multiple options. If you want be told some information the "tourist" harbour tours are nice and in my opinion you should get one visiting the "Speicherstadt" as well (not just the harbour). If you are content with just the view from the River you should consider using the "normal" ferries going to Finkenwerder and such, as they are usable with a normal HVV ticket (the local transport system) and I normally assume visitors to have allready a day ticket so there would be no addional cost. You just have to plan some time as you nowadays have to leave the ferry at the last stop and may not be able to reenter at once (due to demand). Since the ferries are part of the local transport system, there is no one giving out information as you also wouldn't get that on a normal bus.

      @@OurStorytoTell When taking the public transport (HADAG) ferries it is very nice to hop off in Finkenwerder on the other side of Elbe. There lived the fisherman in the good ol' days. Very beautyful buildings, mixed with Harbour-Industrial sourroundings. You can walk to Dock at Rüschpark (or other way around) and get back on a Ferry there. Also quite a lot of traditional german fish restaurants over there.

    I was born in Hamburg and grew up in the Village where the Alster source is( round about 25 km from Hamburg). I grew up with Plattdeutsch as kinda second Language,I can't speak fluent but I can understand all.The song you hear is from Heidi Kabel and I think from 1970.Its used nowadays as kinda Hamburgs Plattdeutsch hymn.Also Plattdeutsch is different in each region. The Plattdeutsch which is used in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein is mostly the Ostfriesisch Plattdeutsch.What I love of Northern Germany is that you can use Moin in every time of the Day. And as heat up North and south Germany are not the best Friends,cultural differences create a division between the two regions. Also the northern Part of Germany is less religious compared to the Rest of Germany which can be a reason for the Division.

I was also a student learning German and have lived and worked in Hamburg, near Landungsbrücke. I had a view of St. Michael‘s tower every morning I woke up! Linguistically high German does not refer the N (Hamburg) being high, and S (Bavaria) being low. The dialect in HH is actually Low German I.e. High german is the official german and people in Hannover come closest to it. Plattdeutsch is spoken in the area towards the Netherlands, were the frisians live, they speak the real low german (plattdeutsch or flat german) which is close to english is also spoken in the north of th Netherlands.

    Haha, I think they spoke Plattdeutsch on the boat, it’s very similar to Dutch and I had also difficulties understanding it as a kid (my dad’s family is from Husum but I grew up in Svabia and Lower Saxony). High German is standard German so that should be easiest for you to understand, spoken in most of Lower Saxony minus coastal areas, and I’d say large parts of the mid west.

    2:51 In the background you can see a sub. That is a decomissioned Russian diesel-electric sub. It is a museum sub which you can visit normally. But I am not certain as of now if you can visit during Covid times, as it is very cramped.
    3:17 Elbphilharmonie, or colloquially, Elfie. Hamburg's own cost-overrun project. It was a running joke which would be last to finish, the Elfie or the BER airport. The last one wins. Elfie lost and finished before BER. Darn it. 🤣
    I see you've come prepared for the windy Hamburg harbor. The Elbe river is what provides Hamburg with a nice breeze even in the most stuffy summers, creating a freshness to the air many other landlocked German cities lack. But it can be very 'refreshing' even in summer, so during the late summer, early fall it can get a bit chilly topside of one of the many riverboats.

    Hamburg is really best from the water. If you ever get the chance to come back - locals like kanuing or kajaking in winterhude area or hire SUPs (e.g. SUP CLUB does it all & is best straight when everything opens around 10am). In this way you actually see how green & romantic the city is even on the water, and more of the amazing buildings. There are all kinds of dialects and sub-dialects. They can be broken down a lot. So it's not just one Bavarian dialect. The broadest is Austro-Bavarian, but then various regions have their own clearly distinct variations of that, which then break down further. Even cities and sometimes villages can be different from each other. Sometimes in obvious ways, but smaller cases can sometimes be almost too subtle to pick up for non-linguists.
    Not all of Bavaria speaks Bavarian either. Franconian in the north is completely different and again has its own sub-versions. The western slice of Bavaria speaks Swabian. And in border regions the dialects often mix a bit. The very north-west of Bavaria for example has an obvious Hessian influence. Parts of northern Baden-Württemberg in turn are Franconian instead of Swabian.
    As others have said, in the north they tend to speak pretty clear German compared to some regions in the south. Ironically they all used to speak Low German, which is almost incomprehensible compared to modern Standard German and closer to Dutch and English in many ways. High German was a foreign language there. Today it's the way around for most.

    Did you explore neighborhoods like Ottensen (close to the Elbe beach), Schanzenviertel, Winterhude or Blankenese? If not, see you next time :-) And I recommend Lüneburg. It is in the south of Hamburg and very beautiful.

    Hi. You definitely should get a sportboat license (See & Binnengewässer). This will be valid in most european countries and allows to rent boats. When I lived in Hamburg I did my Sportbootführerschein See and bought an small boat. My Apartment was in Hamburg Harburg and I mostly took my boat to went over to HH City. As you mentioned you can travel to most places inside HH with an small boat.

      And surprisingly, it's much cheaper than a driver's license. :-) And used boats are pretty affordable, too, especially sailing boats.

    Low German is spoken in the north.
    Standard German (High German) has its origin in the dialects in the middle of Germany. In the south of Germany, Switzerland and Austria the dialects are moving away again.
    But even where I live in the middle of Germany, I understand the dialects in the north much worse than those in the south. In the south there are words that replace German words.
    das Krankenhaus = das Hospital
    das Fahrrad = das Velo (like Dutch)
    To the left and right of the Dutch-German border, the Firsen tribe has received its own language. To me it sounds like a medieval incomprehensible English. Sometimes I catch English or German or Dutch words. But there is one thing above all that is incomprehensible to Germans, English and Dutch. Fortunately, they all can speak the main language.
    If your child is in kindergarten or school then you have to think about where to settle. You can still travel all over Europe from Germany.

      Fahrrad in Dutch is "de fiets" - "le Velo" is the French word

      German gradually underwent a series of consonant shifts in the middle ages. p -> ff, t -> s/ss, k -> ch, d -> t, th -> d, and some others. For example ship -> schiff, water -> wasser, dag/day -> tag
      Low German didn't make those changes. That's why it's more similar to English and Dutch today.

      @Vr Lord that's also not German 🤣🤣 that's Dialects. Hell why you south peeps use like Schrippen or Krapfen. That confuse us🤣🤣 but same also the other way. In South Germany a lot people can't understand me

      Yes we were mistaken thinking that maybe we just hadn’t learned as much high German as we thought (which we haven’t learned a ton), BUT... it was a different dialect so that’s really why we didn’t understand as much. We just didn’t know it. 😂

    Hamburg is completely not high german, most bavarians won't even understand it and
    bavarian ist by far not the hardest dialect. East Frisian won't be understood by almost nobody
    no matter from which part of the country he is from, it is more dutch. Just testing Your german
    try the area around Hannover. This area is known to be absolutely dialect free and really speaking
    german as You are learning it.

    Moin, you would make a big step if you forget your a.m. and p.m. Here the days have 24 hours. And do you still use feet and inches and all this bullshit? Changing to the metric system would be another big step. And yes, Hamburg is nice. I live there.
