It does work, it really does. I've screwed up and ate too many sweets at times, even briefly went back to cheese and I watched my mental health really nose dive from it, BUT I've been mostly plant based for four years and can testify that it is life changing!

It can be socially challenging being plant based. If someone asks, I give my opinion on why I eat what I do but I get tired of defending my health choices so I stay quiet. It makes me sad knowing that people won't help themselves. I see family, and friends at work criticize my food choices, then have a heart attack, or a section of their colon removed, or stomach bypass. Tell me how I eat too may carbs yet you are the one having a heart attack. True story and it makes me sad. I am 47, I have a great BMI, trim, on no medication, healthy yet I am judged. People will learn the older they get.

It can be really hard to watch people slowly killing themselves with food. I have a coworker who is morbidly obese, has just passed the threshold for diabetic, heart problems, likely other issues she hasn't shared (which is fine, I don't pry) but she's doing keto. She's been at it almost a year and lost some weight, but no surprise, is still unhealthy and struggling. She's so afraid of "carbs" that she won't even eat broccoli, but she will eat a bunch of eggs and bacon and think she's being healthy. It should be criminal to teach people fad diets that convince them to eat freaking BACON as a 'health food' but here we are.

So I have to say that I am at the beginning of what Paul has gone through. I am very active and relatively athletic but my weight just kept going on because I was big into dairy and meats. I had the exact same view as Paul, I'm working out so I'll be OK. WRONG. I had a heart attack a couple of months ago and had stents placed in 3 arteries. I was very lucky to survive. I've switched to WFPB diet and am following Dr Esselstyn's protocol. Weight is coming off, stamina is improving. I'm back at the gym!! There's no going back now.

So glad you spoke up Drew and so happy to make your aquaintance. It's hard to find fellow heart attack survivors amongst the internet critics. Absolutely agree about the preciousness of life and it seems that I am getting in better shape than I've ever been!! I know it's a slow path but I am seeing significant changes in my metabolism and body. Veins (and I assume arteries) are dilating, recovery time is quick from workouts (and this is 6 weeks post surgery [sorry I said 2 months in my last post - corrected here] !!!). Damn (in a good way) !! What's funny is people at my gym tell me I look so good and healthy then I tell them what I've just been through!! Then you see the "Oh shit I have to watch out fear" glaze over their faces!! It's all good though as they ask lot's of questions and I'm more than happy to share. Stay healthy my dude [and other dudes & dudesses reading this] !!

    Braunwald’s Heart Disease:
“The study of individual nutrients and foods provides important information about biologic pathways and health effects, but growing evidence indicates that overall dietary quality is equally relevant. Several diet patterns, including the Prudent, DASH-type, and Mediterranean-type diets, significantly reduce CVD risk factors in controlled trials and are consistently linked to lower onset of CHD, stroke, and DM in prospective cohorts. A Mediterranean-type diet also reduced CVD events, compared with a low total fat and low-SFA diet, in a randomized trial in patients with recent MI. Rather than targeting single risk factors, overall diet patterns improve multiple pathways of risk, including BP, glucose-insulin homeostasis, blood lipids, inflammation, endothelial function, arrhythmic risk, and possibly coagulation and thrombosis.”

In a recent study, molecular biologist Ernie Hubbard found that kale-along with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and collard greens-is a hyper-accumulator of heavy metals like thallium and cesium. What's more, traces of nickel, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and arsenic are also common in greens, and this contamination affected both organic standard produce samples.
