THE LOVELY WORDS OF THE LATE MAYA ANGELOU, WHO WROTE: “MY MISSION IN LIFE IS NOT MERELY TO SURVIVE, BUT TO THRIVE; AND TO DO SO WITH SOME PASSION, SOME COMPASSION, SOME HUMOR, AND SOME STYLE.”

In my entire life I have never heard any person state what I have always felt and that is that no person should believe that their entire life or reason for existence revolves around their children. Thank you Maya for sharing this with the world. I have watched so many women waste away because once her child rearing duties are over she doesn't feel that she has any value.

I had a friend, Virginia Tremble who was my surrogate mother. I would get lost in my talks with her down at the church. Every time I listen to Dr Angelou it is like I am talking with Virginia. She became suddenly ill with cancer and passed quickly. My pastor went to see her and he said she looked so poorly. He asked her how she felt and she simply said " Pastor, it is well with my soul". She passed soon afterward. I miss her much.

Although my birth mother may have not truly understood her purpose in liberation Mother Maya reminded me that I too can liberate me. So I have freed my self and my mother and take peace knowing that there are many she called her daughter and I was one of many. Love liberates! Our mother Maya is so blessed to truly be free.

Agree - we white folk (me/us) can appreciate class and intelligence when we see it. Maya had it. A leader. Like with the Jewish race, the Blacks have such grace in their women. Loyalty too. And their men are brave. White folk have to some extent lost our clan-ship through the disbursement of our children away from the family and our elders away from the family. God in Heaven, I pray we find our families again and our elders and that we all come together. Blacks, Whites, Jewish and all others. I will buy this book.

This book is good but at the same time it contradicts her earlier book "Caged Bird" It left me confused and sort of felt lied to. In IKWTCBS she tells of her son's imaculate coneption (metaphorically speaking) and how she wanted to see what sex was... She said she found a random boy she knew while walking down the street if he wanted to have sex and he was shocked and his mouth dropped open, etc... But in this book she says he called her and asked and she said yes after months of him asking her.
