    Very interesting and you hit a very positive emotional ‘chord’ in me. Winter is my favorite season.
    The poem ‘Winter Blue Jay’ and Robert Frost’s ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ combined explains exactly how I feel about winter. These poems talks about taking time to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature in the winter time. Especially in rural England or rural New England. But in my case, it is New York State.
    I remember years ago traveling through the farm lands along New York State Route 31 on a clear winter morning. Snow on the ground and frozen Oneida Lake to the north, I saw the winter sun rising and igniting the soon to be blue sky. Even though I never read ‘Winter Blue Jay’ before, it reminded me of that day when you recited the poem.
    Winter is a time of life reflection. And winter poems do a very good job at that.

    The sound 'ough' is indeed so tricky. English pronunciation is quite tricky that's true, but It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though! 😂 Here's a lil' poem I wrote about it.
    ~~~~ Tricky Tetragraph [For English Learners] ~~~~
    When I come across 'ough', tricky tetragraph
    I sigh and though tough, hard to not have a cough!
    Give it a try guys and take a good PUFF!
    And to rhyme with it, follow me to Hough
    You'll be strong enough, the stroll won't be tough
    I also promise the ground's not too rough
    Around this village, we could meet a chough
    Just to clear your voice, make a little cough
    Don't forget that one is rhyming with 'OFF'
    Let's have a lil' drink before you taper off
    Come and dip your hands into that pretty trough
    Near it stands a cow, perfect to learn HOW
    Resting over there, you should say that plough
    Under the blossom that hangs on the bough
    making light of drought inside the cool slough
    Now we're refreshed, some even massed their TOE
    That is how these sound and this even though
    Better hit the road, we're not quite on furlough
    Some roots we might grow if we rest here like dough
    End of your tether, I hope you' re still NOT
    Think what you've caught, will make you a dreadnought
    'know it's a true fight, when you give it a thought
    But try to enjoy what so far the trip's brought
    Then, there's the 'ough' makin' you feel in a BREW
    For then you have those that can be said like 'true'
    Brougham, the carriage, or town if you went through
    The case is also of the quite tricky 'slough'
    Have you heard of 'schwa' and the sound which is /ə/
    The one in alive and again and mother
    That's how you'd hear it in a British Borough
    U.S. might protest, they say /oʊ/ in thorough
    After the ballad, you might fancy a CUP
    of tea but before, I'd like to speak up
    That in fact 'hiccough' is said like hiccup
    With a /əp/ or a /ʌp/; to you it is up!
    North of Perth; with /əf/, of /ʌf/ close enough
    Two lines will suffice for the river Greenough
    Ever thought of a link between 'knee' and 'CLOCK'?
    For sure never but, that's how's pronounced 'hough',
    As in Irish town 'Clough'! Even if 'Ness' you mock,
    The same goes for 'lough', irish cognate of 'Loch'
    The latter is 'Scot' but Irish is 'Turlough'
    Oh guys, look o'er there, you've seen the brown FOX?
    Funny cause I was about to say, folks
    That 'lough' for a lake is also said /lɒx/
    And Turlough, therefore, is uttered /Turlɒx/
    But 1 remains though... weirdly rhyming with 'STOPS'!
    And it is 'Ough's Road' where the 'Ough's' is said /ɒps/
    We now touch the end of the quite tricky path
    You're still there? Congrats! I know...English is tough!
    Fab. 01/12/24.
    ❤🌹
    Hope you enjoy it and that all is correct. ;-)
    Tell me otherwise ...
    And join me on All Poetry ! 👍👌🕯🪔📜🕯🖋
    Notes:
    Sough : [ Verb= make a characteristic sighing sound (esp. of the wind); Noun= a soft continuous murmuring sound OR a sewer or drain or an outlet channel] can be pronounced /sʌf/ (like in 'puff') or /saʊ/ (like in cow)
    "Slough" has three pronunciations, depending on its meaning:
    1- /slʌf/ (for the noun meaning a skin shed by an animal, and for the verb derived from it)
    2- /slaʊ/ (for the noun meaning a muddy area, and for the verb derived from it. Also for the noun meaning a state of depression)
    3- /sluː/ (alternative US pronunciation for the noun meaning a muddy area, and for the verb derived from it)
    Winter time
    Theme:
    experience of a cold winter morning
    Imagery:
    rich in imagery
    Contrasts:
    There's a contrast between the warmth of sitting by the fire and the cold outdoor experience The author goes from the comfort of the fire to the chilly outdoors, highlighting the stark contrast between warmth and cold.
    Symbolism:
    The frost and cold can symbolise the harshness of winter or even broader themes like challenges or difficulties in life.
    Rhyme and Rhythm:
    The poem has a rhythmic and rhyming structure, contributing to its poetic flow. The use of rhyme enhances the musicality of the verses.
    Overall, the poem paints a vivid picture of a winter morning, using imagery to convey both the physical sensations and activities which accompany the coldness of Winter.
    "Before the star have left the skies
    at morning in the dark i rise"
    convey the idea of waking up very early in the morning, even before the stars have disappeared from the sky. "morning in the dark" emphasises the early hours, suggesting a predawn awakening. This could be indicative of a demanding routine
    "shivering in my nakedness" conveys a strong sense of coldness, emphasising the discomfort experienced by the author. Additionally, describing the candle as "cold" implies that even the source of light and warmth in the bathroom provides little respite from the overall chill. This further underscores the cold and challenging nature of the winter morning, contributing to the atmospheric and sensory elements of the poem.
    "close by the jolly fire i sit
    to warm my frozen bones ' a bit;"
    suggest that the author is sitting close to the fire to alleviate the extreme cold and stiffness in the body. The expression "frozen bones" is a figurative way of conveying intense cold and discomfort. It's a poetic way of expressing how the bitter cold of winter can make one feel chilled to the core, and seeking the warmth of the fire becomes a means of thawing and finding comfort. "a bit" implies a temporary respite, acknowledging that the cold is pervasive and challenging to dispel completely.
    "Or with a reindeer-sled, explore
    the colder countries around the door"
    suggest venturing into the colder regions surrounding the author's dwelling, using a reindeer-sled. This could be a metaphorical or literal exploration of the winter landscape. The mention of "the door" signifies the entrance to the outside world, inviting imagery of a winter journey
    The term "countries" here may evoke a sense of expansiveness and diversity in the winter scenery, making the outdoor expedition feel like experiencing the familiar surroundings transformed into something almost unrecognisable, due to the extreme winter conditions. The metaphorical use of "countries" suggests that the ordinary landscape, under the influence of winter, becomes somewhat foreign and unfamiliar. It emphasises the transformative and challenging nature of the winter environment.
    "when i go out, my nurse doth wrap
    me in my comforter and cap;"
    "nurse" depicts the author's preparations for facing the winter weather with the assistance of a caregiver.
    "the cold wind burns my face" conveys the experienced biting and chilling sensation, suggesting that the cold air feels sharp and peppery, perhaps causing discomfort or a tingling sensation.
    The word "burn" conveys the intensity and harshness of the cold wind. The fast and strong wind creates powerful friction, which can be metaphorically described as "burning" the face, adds depth to the portrayal of the challenging winter conditions.
    In a literary sense, it captures the paradox of the cold wind feeling like it has a burning quality due to its force and impact on the author's face. This nuanced description enhances the imagery in the poem and emphasises the discomfort and harshness of the winter weather.
    "blows its frosty pepper up my nose"
    continues the vivid and sensory description of the cold wind. Here, "frosty pepper" is a metaphorical way of expressing that the wind carries tiny, cold particles that resemble the sensation of pepper. The metaphor adds a tactile and almost spicy quality to the description, emphasizing the sharp and biting nature of the cold air as it enters the author's nostrils.
    This imagery contributes to the overall portrayal of the intense cold and discomfort faced by the author when exposed to the winter wind. It engages the reader's senses, creating a more immersive experience of the winter environment described in the poem.
    "Black are my steps"
    suggests that the author's footprints or steps contrast starkly with the surrounding snowy landscape. The use of "black" colour implies a distinct and noticeable mark left on the silvery whitened ground.
    "silver sod" refers to the snowy ground. The choice of "silver" emphasises the colour associated with winter landscapes
    "Thick blows my frosty breath"
    suggests that the author's breath is thick and visible in the cold air. "frosty" implies that the breath condenses in the cold and becomes visible as frost or mist.
    "abroad", in this context, means widely blown into the open air. The author's breath is not only thick, but also being dispersed into the surrounding atmosphere.
    This line adds to the sensory and atmospheric elements of the poem, depicting the tangible effects of the cold on the author's breath. It contributes to the overall portrayal of the winter morning, emphasising the physical manifestations of the harsh weather conditions.
    "And tree and house, and hill and lake" suggests that various elements of the landscape, including trees, houses, hills, and lakes, are all covered in frost. The repetition of "and" creates a rhythmic and expansive effect, encompassing different features of the surroundings.
    "Are frosted like a wedding-cake". This metaphor compares the frosted landscape to a wedding cake. The use of "frosted" draws attention to the icy and white appearance of the landscape, much like the decorative frosting on a cake.
    The metaphorical comparison to a wedding cake adds a touch of elegance and beauty to the winter scene, creating a visual image of a landscape adorned with a delicate layer of frost. It also serves as a creative and memorable way to convey the transformative and decorative nature of the winter frost on the elements of the natural environment.
    Despite the extreme cold and challenging conditions, the poet uses vivid and poetic language to convey the beauty and visual impact of the winter scenery. The frosted landscape, likened to a wedding cake, suggests a certain elegance and enchantment, emphasising the transformative effect of winter on the surroundings.
    It's a wonderful example of how poetry can capture the complexity of an experience, highlighting both the difficulties and the awe-inspiring aspects of Winter.
    Quoted here in a old 2019th lovely " Woman's Weekly " magazine
    that I m studying at the moment
    is William Wordsworth's poem
    " Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive.
    But to be young was very heaven " ( ?)
    I m sure it s a very famous quote ,
    but a texbook example of a struggle for Continentals abroad
    to get our heads around .
    Emily's verse weaves through frosty air,
    A tapestry of moor's ,silent and fair.
    The moors, a pallid pageantry,
    Where Robert's pen find mystery.
    Sara's verses in the frost kissed tryst,
    The lanterns flicker in the feathered mist.
    Through the prism of time, their words transcend,
    In dulcet hymns, this winter they blend.
    Her words, a sonnet, an embrace.
    Kat's ornate tongues, a linguistic ballet,
    Her words bloom in the winter's sway.
    Oh, the beauty, the elegance unfurled,
    In the dulcet embrace of her winter world spellbound and fair.
    This is my homage to someone the most ethereal !
    Such a sweet video! It would be great in a near future to have a video explaining how to write poems in English. People rarely talk about the sonnets, decasyllabic verses, rime patterns, ballads...
    ~~~~ March ~~~~
    The endless winter makes one last effort,
    To bury the earth and chill the expanse:
    Under the brisk breath of the northern storm
    More n' more the snow piles up in snowbanks.
    And this snowy sea breaks into the wind
    Over the coppice with its naked boughs.
    Carts in filled ravines often get stuck in
    Under the steady heap of the billows.
    The cold air's heavy with morbid vapours.
    We go out few times. The hearth gathers us;
    The old men, solemn, tell there of terrors
    Which make the child quail, and the elder blush.
    The cruel season sows mourning at hazard;
    For the hosts of woods, everywhere hides traps,
    And the poacher stalks wild boar and roe deer
    Entangled in snow, blinded by the sleet;
    All ails, men, cattle; all weeps, trees, echoes.
    In his attic moans the poor, thin and pale,
    And at times you think you can hear his sobs
    Through the hundred sounds of the moaning gale.
    Dawn no longer shines on frowning mountains.
    There's no hint of end of the livid days.
    Though sometimes a patch of blue comes to sky,
    The winter pours down harder on the thatch.
    But just as after the flood, one fair morn,
    The rainbow shone in its former splendour,
    The clear Easter sun, thought to be nigh out,
    Next day will gild all with its fairest light.

    professor Katharine, I entirely agree with you as to winter time. But soon the winter will be changed by spring. Nevertheless, I have found something till then, which I also would recommend you - I have began from November end swimming in the swimming pool from the level 0 and I have been progressing in it with my trainer with every time forward. Of course I do not neglect progressing in English.
