I'm surprised you didn't count GMK or G1984 as legitimately good movies! 1984 has similar merits to 1954 and Shin, and GMK has about everything you need In a Godzilla movie, including a message! Also would you count Godzilla Vs Kong in the same league as KOTM as being a quality Godzilla movie that could impress even non fans?
84 and gmk are great, but I don't think objectively. They can stand next to 54 or Shin. Honestly, looking back, I don't think kotm would be good as it is maybe too Hollywood popcorn entertainment with not a lot of substance. Still, though, I love them all. I don't know what an average non godzilla movie goer would think.
Okay, here are MY hot-takes: 1. TOHO should do a Godzilla film or two (three? four?) that are ENTIRELY in stop-motion with an actual. Don't believe me? Check this clip out; I rest my case: ua-cam.com/video/YSBFiXUUT6w/v-deo.html 2. GODZILLA 2000 actually does have a message--it's just not too overt, but it talks about humanity's nigh-adbsurd need for control over things we really don't by having Katagiri and the CCI in that role, plus Shinodaconstantly calling him out on that. Again, not over-the-top or too visible but it's there if you really think about it. 3. GODZILLA: Reborn, the sequel to G'2000 should never have been canned--I actually would have liked the movie as a fun American kaiju romp. Plus, Miba as an unused kaiju just sounds so bad@##! 4. Steve Martin as Godzilla protagonist is actually not that bad--sure, he isn't great like Serizawa, but he's far from the worst. Again, just me and my opinion. 5. The Millenium Era deserves more recognition for at least trying new things with Godzilla (also, yes, G: Final Wars is way better than what people give it credit for). 6. DO NOT have Godzilla in a shared universe; to me, it 'll completely undermine the mystique behind his character. Instead we should have different film "eras" or "series" (like the Showa Era, the Heisei, Millenium and the Reiwa). For example, if we've got a Guillermo Del Toro Godzilla series, name that one "The Del-Toro Era". 7. Have less of legacy kaiju and more new kaiju! I get it, we want to see more of our old favorites, returned...I WANT our new favorites return, but the thing is with kaiju movies you can introduce new kaiju into the franchise. Yes, we got the MonsterVerse, yes, we got Singular Point, but I want both TOHO and other non-Japanese companies to create their own titanic monstrosities to meet with the King of the Monsters. 8. Save Mothra for when it's really important. Instead of plopping her into a movie just for box office, make sure the story actually constructs as a relevant part. 9. No, I don't think you need to be Japanese or have a Japanese director to "truly get" what makes Godzilla who he is. Look at John Carpenter, look at Guillermo Del Toro, heck look at Gareth Edwards. They've shown a level of understanding for Godzilla and kaiju genre stories that is far more apparent than some director off the street. Some people may STRONGLY disagree with me and that's ok, but I'm sticking to my guns here. 10. I don't want to see King Ghidorah always being used as the main baddie for Godzilla. Now ,I love our 3-headed golden goliath of ruin from space, but what about Destoroyah? Thematically speaking, HE should be the one who gets the Archnemesis title since he was made from the residue from the Oxygen Destroyer, so I want him to be done a little less dirty than what was seen in Godzilla V Destoroyah. 11. Contrary to what you think, Gojifan, I think Godzilla CAN work as hero, but as a hero to whom? I think that i anyone does the Godzilla=Hero route, they should do what Gamera 3: Revenge of Irys did. If you know what I mean, then I don't think I need to explain. 12. *THE HESEI GAMERA TRILOGY IS BETTER THAN NEARLY ALL GODZILLA MOVIES!!* Ok, there I said it, phew! 13. Finally: More Godzilla movies and stories should look to The Heisei Gamera Trilogy as a reference for strong writing, character development, kaiju characterization and how to give them personalities, world-building, tone, etc. There's a reason why and that's because those kaiju movies did the impossible with Gamera. "Oh, that's just treading old ground, blah blah blah...", yeah, but the thing is *IT WORKED!* That's it from me. Good video Gojifan. Honestly, almost none of your points offended--after being in this bat-sh*t crazy fandom for so long, you just become numb to it all.
Heisei movies are so boring. Those fights are mostly just laser beams and slowly walking up to things. I'd rather watch the campy Showa films then most of the Heisei films.
