Depends on how many buy it. I'm sure they asked existing Raptor buyers how many would have preferred a V-8 at a hugely inflated price, and probably asked TRX owners, too. It's not like they spent that much on engineering.
@ 2:29 He keeps saying "small group of folks".. But every complaint I've ever heard about the Raptor stems around that lackluster sounding V6. The kind of person who wants to go out and buy a Raptor is the kind of person who wants the muscle and sound of a burly V8. Ford is going to kill it with this..
I can only hope that the McRib is back at the same time you guys test this truck. I want to see you eating the McRib, much like you did with the strawberries in the last Raptor segment. I'm pretty sure the sauce shouldn't stain the interior.
A V8 in 2022? Love the idea, but the reality is fuel and insurance prices of the R , yet alone maintenance and repairs makes zero sense. Plus, very few are taking their $109k truck to Baja like conditions. Same with TRX. 99.99% of them are asphalt queens. Curious, what is Ram RTX Mark and Jack? (See vid description)?
There is a reason why trx has only two languages for their manual. (English and Arabic) These trucks are for people with so much money that they don't know what to do with it. Its a crazy fun car to do crazy stuff with. It doesn't have to make sense. Besides, msrp might be 109k but good luck getting your hands on one anywhere close to that price. Anybody trying to pay msrp will be laughed out of the dealership.
I see a lot of comments on “ford only did it bc ram trx”… well yeah. That’s how competition works. The only reason you have a trx is bc of raptor. And the only reason you have raptor R is bc of TRX. Companies want to keep their customers coming back to their brand. It’s not a new concept or rocket science. Mustang Camaro, Raptor TRX, Wrangler Bronco. And the only reason for 700+ hp in America is dodge hellcats. It’s not a demerit on any of these companies.
So what you're saying is you agree 😅. Not sure the point of calling out people for stating something obvious and then simply restating that obvious thing as if it's something novel.
I'll keep my 2022 TRX. Longer engine history, better interior quality, and slightly more power. I'm not a brand fan boy either, I've owned them all, from imports, domestics, exotics. Each has pros and cons. But the debate on Raptor R VS TRX will never be driven by spec's, it'll be Ford VS Mopar fanboys arguing over emotion. Just sit back and roll your eyes at the arguments, it's about to get comical.
Between lies and stuttering it was hard to tell what was holding them up from doing the V8 again. They should've been asked why they would even bother with that V6 in the standard one
He basically had a long-winded answer to say they didn't change anything with the chassis. They just slapped a Predator engine in and Ford is charging us $30K for it.
He pretty much put a stone on the topic, yeah, the V6 was a cost cut. Not only on the engine department, but all around the car. The original raptor was built to a price point and marketed as "you don't need a V8".
I love V8s but I feel like the TTV6 will still be the true best option as a desert running truck of the three (Raptor, Raptor R, TRX) The Raptor R and TRX just feel like gimmicks in that they just threw a V8 with high horsepower just to do it.
At a certain point you don't need more hp. I'd argue 500 hp is just enough for an off road racing truck. Anything more is just wasted energy from spinning tires.
I had a gen 1 Raptor and have a gen 2 Raptor. The TTV6 is more than enough horse power for the suspension to handle. Off road it is not about 0 to 60 times, it is a balance of the whole vehicle. A proper tube built pre-runner is running around the 700 hp range with double the suspension travel, for comparision. It would be better to have naturally aspirated V8 (make it aluminum instead of the gen 1 cast iron to save weight) and skip the complications and weight of the turbos and superchargers for more reliability, especially in an off-road environment.
Their answer to the V8 question is clearly BS. Reason why they did it was because the competition outdid them in power when compared to their "wimpy" turbo V6. The simple answer should have just been 3 letters: TRX.
I’m really digging all the last gasps of the pre-hybrid/electric era of automobiles. Next year will be a Raptor Lightning. Calling it now. They’ll want to be able to say they went there even if they don’t sell many initially/it’s insanely expensive. And honestly, why not.
It's engineered. On an application like this the bump stops have an engineered spring rate and are designed to be part of "normal" operations (i.e. crazy off road shit).
I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it. We were converting Mustangs to 5 link rear ends in the late 80's in the driveway. A lot of talking and the bottom line is Ford took a beat down. When you don't respond and dominate, you become a "me too" product. Who wants a "me too" award? Kick the crap out of the competition and leave them bleeding from every orifice, plan the next three steps and slowly implement them to remain ahead. Nothing admirable about playing catch up. Ford has been lost since the late 80's Virtually nobody was able to mess with a Lightning, an SHO, a Supercoupe, or a Mustang and they've gone from delivering beat downs to accepting consolation prizes. It makes me sad.
But they stayed relevant why d wave bc with competition..its childish..thats why Ford stands on it own while others like Chrysler sleep in bed with the Mario Bros
This is such a strange interview. It comes off defensive, scolding, and with an angry 'You just don't underdtand' attitude. "We always planned to put the V8 in, okay? We wanted to and thought about it back in Gen 2" WTF is that? Just admit it, TRX with the Hellcat supercharged motor packed your lunch and you were forced to add this motor because you were embarrassed. The rest of the Raptors are running around with mini-van EcoBoost v6 engines.

Man, this Ford guy is a master of blowing hot air out of his mouth without saying much of anything.
I liked that he clarified that they didn't make many changes over the EcoBoost Raptor. He gave a very reasonable answer to why they didn't.
Hey man at least the V8 is back in the raptor
Question: "So why now?" Answer: "A long walk around the dinosaur in the room."
You really gotta appreciate what Ford is doing here. The engineering is amazing.
They need to build an American outboard for our boats !!! … hate Asian outboards !!!
Well, lack of engineering really. They just removed the V6 and stuck in the V8. But the Raptor (in general) is a great piece of kit 👍
@@obsidian.... it was a bit more complicated than an engine swap- which is why it took so long. They had to reconfigure the V8 from a sports/muscle car application (where it had 760 hp but at higher RPMs, and they also pulled another 15 ft-lbs out of it) to a truck application. Also, new crash test compliance.
No. Its all marketing, just like the lightning F150s. Always has been, and no one that turns wrenches buys them more than once for a reason.
@@Mr-ed5ep If you “turn wrenches” you can’t afford a $110,000 toy truck.
Happy TRX owner, happy to see the Raptor rejoin the V8 party. Smoke'em while you got 'em. These dinosaurs aren't going to be available much longer.
Theyve been saying that for a whilr
They've been saying that for years. I still don't see anything that beats a well made naturally aspirated V8. Toyota made the new tundra a V6 twin turbo hybrid to try to save gas and it gets basically the same fuel economy and it's going to cost way more to maintain over the years. Engine probably won't last nearly as long because it has literally two turbos
Real answer to why they put a V8 in it is: because TRX
That Ford engineer talks way too much without answering questions.
Was he offended by the first question? You could tell he advocated for that eco boost lol
Wished you asked them if they benchmarked it with the TRX and what exactly they they try to exceed over the TRX
I’m sure Ford said before the interview that they were not going to talk about the TRX
I'm not a mopar fanboy but I've been browsing every post I can find about the Raptor R and it seems like everyone is pretending the TRX doesn't exist. Quite telling.
The Raptor was already a superior product. They just put a V8 in it. Simple.
@@paulchalos8502 they spent years and years saying the ecoboost v6 was fine, there will e no more V8 raptors, there's no need. And then... something happened... and now they contradicted everything they said about the 2nd and 3rd gen raptors and put a supercharged V8 in one, for no apparent reason.
Yall do these videos so well. Even changing up the interviews camera view. That was so unique and cool
Ahhh yes another awesome vehicle that I can only dream of affording.
You should use a polarized lens filter when shooting through glass. It will eliminate the glare and the cloud reflections.
I feel like the ford raptor is the landrover equivalent but for suburban dads. All jokes aside what a good looking piece of machine.
I agree that generally they are both mall crawlers, but if you start hitting curbs with your Land Rover you’ll ding the wheels, ruin the tires, blow out the air suspension, and cause the electrical system to catch fire. A huge appeal of the raptor is how much abuse it can take at any level, whether on the street or on dunes or rocks and still be somewhat reliable
Right, 95% of these trucks will never touch a dirt road.
Needs a snow plow accessory.
“Small group of folks that have always hounded us for a V8”. He’s not happy about this decision. I’ve had two Raptors (eco boost) and sold them due to the crazy people willing to pay more than they should for a depreciating item. I like V8’s but was happy with the eco boost. There’s always going to be the 1%- you catered to them and you will profit accordingly. Thanks for making it sound like you didn’t want to make excessive amounts of money from making this truck.
I caught that too
Thanks for uploading! Still enjoy the video without the drive, great to find out what they've been doing with the platform. Pesky UK roads would never fit this vehicle but I've made my peace with that.
So the "small group" can get this behemoth but God forbid thousands want the MK4 Focus ST or Fiesta ST and all we get is the middle finger?! Im pissing myself with excitement looking forward to seeing these crawling about malls and city streets. Woooo /s
If they could charge $109k for a Fiesta ST they'd be happy to sell them.

More wheel travel + more hp. Big brain engineering!
Better late than never, They could have kept the 6.2litre in the truck and everybody would have been happy!! Thanks for the update fella's!!👍👍

I'm going to guess this will be faster than the TRX just based on weight. Not sure though because the TRX seems to be magical and do crazy shit it shouldn't
Something tells me it won't be faster. He stated they wanted it to be fastest "offroad" seeming to be a scapegoat. But we shall see. Plenty of company's supercharged the 5.0L variant of the F150 and they still dont beat the TRX.
@@kozy_taco2164 Yeah I've seen so many try to compete but they just don't. Supercharged Chevy 6.2 5.0 etc and the ram just never gave up until electric came into play
@@tempestofruin yea the TFL race blew me away between the TRX and the Lightning. I think that might be another Key to him saying fastest offroad lol. I wonder if it will even be faster than the Lightning haha
It possibly may not be as simple as weight. Gearing, transmission tuning, the power curve and tire size will be factors as well. Raptor R looks to be standard with 37 inch tires so that will play a large factor into which ends up being quicker. Offroad it may be a more simple story, the fox shocks and the lower front end weight will be big advantages whenapeeding offroad
A tuned gen2 is bout as fast or lil faster/lil slower than a TRX depending on driver/conditions/fuel/tune. But they weigh 500-700 lbs less give it take & have a couple extra cogs on the tranny so to answer the question- stock for stock off the showroom floor I have Zero doubt the RaptoR will be quicker than the TRX. Then Ram will make the 820hp TRX pink-eye & shit in everyone’s face 😂😜🤣
My father was shopping for a new Raptor Supercrew 10 years ago that had a standard v8. He would flip right now if I told him the price nearly doubled to get a new one, today 😂
Love how the engineering just bullshited his answer to jacks question as to why they finally but back a V8. Lol
Jack should have had the balls to interrupt him and say “did the TRX influence your decision to do this”…
@@cmdrbillpaxton4302 The guy would have just dodged that question, too, and could lead to them not getting this kind of support in the future. It's basically a rule for marketing, never mention the other guys. It does happen, but is quite rare.
@@Big_Red1 They have to be able to dismiss the competition. That would be tough with the TRX.
So Ford listened to people saying ‘Put a dang V8 in the Raptor’.
Now GM/Cadillac needs to do that with all their Blackwings.

After watching the whole video, I don't get this interview. Ford didn't give you a marketing or PR guy, so I understand the interview not being polished... But if they're going to give you a technical guy, why did he talk around every chance to answer with technical details to your questions?
heavy (and required) marketing/PR coaching
Its a corporate culture issue. Ill leave it at that.
I think history will look back on this period (early 2020's) as a very interesting moment in cars for us consumers where we are pushing for EV's. Ex. Ford selling the lightning but on the complete opposite end selling a monster petrol truck that makes 700hp
No one is pushing for EV besides beta tech guys and stay at home soccer moms lol
Just watching this video pushed my T levels to the max!
$109k? You're lucky to get the V6 for that now, after the dealer is done butt-hurting you.

It’s crazy how in a decade we’ve gone from a v8 being a standard expectation in a raptor to calling it very niche. RIP to the good old days
Isn't the regular f150 V8 still like the most sold truck in USA?
No
Did he “Circle Back” to answer the question? After the commercials kicked in I already moved on to UTG. I thought I was watching a WH press briefing.

“Finally delivering to a small group of folks.” - Ford. How many is a small group?
Depends on how many buy it. I'm sure they asked existing Raptor buyers how many would have preferred a V-8 at a hugely inflated price, and probably asked TRX owners, too. It's not like they spent that much on engineering.
thanks to fca for making this happen 💯💯
SG: why the v8?
Ford: money
@ 2:29 He keeps saying "small group of folks".. But every complaint I've ever heard about the Raptor stems around that lackluster sounding V6. The kind of person who wants to go out and buy a Raptor is the kind of person who wants the muscle and sound of a burly V8. Ford is going to kill it with this..
Being an “F-150 Raptor Program Manager” seems like a dream job.
Loved the line about his jawline. So true, and essential for that job, I'm sure. Got to have the ultimate manliness (thus the stubble).
Nice work as always!
I can only hope that the McRib is back at the same time you guys test this truck. I want to see you eating the McRib, much like you did with the strawberries in the last Raptor segment. I'm pretty sure the sauce shouldn't stain the interior.
I was interested in hearing how much can it tow.
I'm sure you'll get that in their detailed test.
Just in time for expensive gas. To make matters worse, gas in Malaysia is 2.1 MYR per litre.
Nice job by Jack at directing the conversation. He kept it moving smoothly and unobtrusively.
Great video! I will say I loved the tap-dancing around the question of "why a V8 now?". Let's just call out the elephant in the room... lol.
Awesome. Still not sure I’d take one over a TRX.
I would in a heartbeat.
@@mitchellsteindler so true 😂
Well the only reason the Hellcats exist is because the 2013 GT500 came out with 662 hp while the Challenger's most powerful trim was 470 hp lol

Between lies and stuttering it was hard to tell what was holding them up from doing the V8 again. They should've been asked why they would even bother with that V6 in the standard one
Epa would be a default answer
Raptor domination. Again
He basically had a long-winded answer to say they didn't change anything with the chassis. They just slapped a Predator engine in and Ford is charging us $30K for it.
Pretty much. Sounds like they wanted a V8 raptor to start with.
This man is the Mayweather of dancing around that v8 question.
Should have asked for an Aerostar R with Coyote engine as the next project. Hellcat Pacifica can't have all the fun.
He pretty much put a stone on the topic, yeah, the V6 was a cost cut. Not only on the engine department, but all around the car. The original raptor was built to a price point and marketed as "you don't need a V8".
I love V8s but I feel like the TTV6 will still be the true best option as a desert running truck of the three (Raptor, Raptor R, TRX)
The Raptor R and TRX just feel like gimmicks in that they just threw a V8 with high horsepower just to do it.
1:08 - 2:30 is a nice long way of saying "Ram made us do it"
Buying the Raptor R in this current economic environment is the equivalent of growing a third testicle.
Balls for dayz!
Their answer to the V8 question is clearly BS. Reason why they did it was because the competition outdid them in power when compared to their "wimpy" turbo V6. The simple answer should have just been 3 letters: TRX.
These are the people that put a 4 cylinder 2.3L engine in a big Bronco
I’m really digging all the last gasps of the pre-hybrid/electric era of automobiles. Next year will be a Raptor Lightning. Calling it now. They’ll want to be able to say they went there even if they don’t sell many initially/it’s insanely expensive. And honestly, why not.
It’s going to be hard with that weight
That video of the suspension shows the truck consistently on the bump stops. Is that normal? I don't know enough about hauling tail across the desert.
It's engineered. On an application like this the bump stops have an engineered spring rate and are designed to be part of "normal" operations (i.e. crazy off road shit).
Will this give me recognition from the mid life crisis club?
9:12 He didn't have to do that but I understand the stress and the pressure.
@@johnblack4915 I wonder who will own Chrysler next...
I am thinking Yugo.
Wow, that was the longest explanation that could have been summed up by “We had to make a truck to compete with the TRX”
