I can feel that ecstasy whenever I go skating and I hit a new spot or land a new trick. Skateboarding is a challenging sport which requires of so much skill and so much courage, so when I push my comfort zone and try to hit the bigger set of stairs or that really dangerous rail, or when I take a hounded millions attempts to get that unbelievably difficult trick on lock, and finally do both, I can feel that ecstasy.

I think it’s a lot of time not our true purpose or passion..for instance..if I were to tell you to take apart a car engine then put it back together..you would go crazy..get frustrated..or lack enthusiasm to do so because you’ll think of every small detail in accomplishing that tasks..plus you’ll say “I’m not a mechanic...I don’t know how to take apart an engine..and I don’t have the passion to do this”..no flow..but if I asked a professional mechanic to do it...who loves being a mechanic..runs his own shop..and is passionate..it wouldn’t even look like work..time wouldn’t even exist to him..even if it took him 2 months to do it..There’s only a start and finish..everything inbetween is irrelevant to him..a flow state..my opinion

Mikael, your statement was perfect. I know you weren't really asking a question but here's the answer if you'd like a reply. Certainly when a person is playing a computer game it seems as if the game is causing the person to fall into a flow state. In large part that's because the person enjoys playing the game itself, not just for outcomes (scoring points, winning, etc.). The exact same flow effects can be evoked when approaching and writing a report. Only one other thing has to occur for that to happen. A person only needs to fall in Love with the process of writing the report, much like they enjoy playing the game. It's about intention and if the person can fall in Love with the process of report writing, the report becomes enjoyable and fun like the games are for many...I'd Love to hear how you feel about that. Please try it. .

Every single human being suffers from their own pursuit of happiness because they think that they can create it for themselves. This is a distorted way to think of ones life because it is born of confusion. Happiness is based in what one can do together out of devotion and compatibility with another in the world to make it a better place for all. The pursuit of happiness is the most destructive thing one can pursue in ones life; for we are not here in this world to be happy but to "WORK". Please think about this carefully and walk around it for some time. For to see anything of value one must take the time to look at it from all angles. Here in the physical manifest world it is all about "doing" ; where each of us have come from is about "being". We are here to fulfill the need of the soul which was given to each of us before we entered into the world. All of us here have forgotten where we have come from and the promise we made to those who sent us into the world. To remember this is part of the work mentioned earlier. If we only knew what it took to send us here we would work much harder in remembering why we have come, who we must meet and what we must do with those we are destined to meet. We all search for meaning for life and in this search there is the search for the truth. The truth of why we are here and what it all means! I have been a part of this search for most of my life and in my search I found this or perhaps it found me. It will take you a life time to dive into this and practice its Teachings for it comes from our Source...the Source of all Life. The links I provide here are all connected but it is up to you through experience to connect them. This Flow... as a kid, I would spend at least 16hrs on the weekends trying to progress in video games. From trying to Beat the highest/best time in racing games to completing whole seasons (Literally 1st College Preseason game to the end of my Professional career) and developing "my player" in sports games to be the greatest. I WAS OBSESSED WITH ACCOMPLISHING all Accolades. Heisman, Player of The Year, Rookie of the year, championships, hall of fame, etc... I was really really good. and then I would play for Money and the love of the game slowly dwindled because I didn't feel like my talents were able to actually shine because of the technology at the time. I didn't think the IQ of the game was realistic. better said, the game was dumb and slow to react and my mind and fingers were years ahead. that was almost 10 years ago.
but now, I have been searching for something to challenge me with the skills I have. I Finally Found 1. I found a career that I want to pursue that will bring me joy/bliss and it is definitely challenging! I found another career but I'm not will be fun. it will challenge me mentally, physically & emotionally. they both will challenge my character and my relationship with my family. I'm up for it. I don't think a regular 9-5 is for me.
Thank God I found this information right on time. my life will forever be changed.

I'm 21 and in the same boat. But the way to find your passion -- what you love -- is to try new things. Yes, sometimes passions can be discovered. But, in a lot of cases, passions are built. They are not always innate. If you invest time and energy in something enough, often a passion for it develops. Try many new, different things. Even things you think you are not interested in at all. Do it for a solid amount of time before you decide whether you like it. Some things you try you will hate. Others will stick. Good luck!

Thank you, Jim B. how correct you are. To even think of trying to be happy is a path taking us away from the reality we are in. And yes the pursuit of happiness is costing so much, in time, finances we truly cannot afford. Why do we spend so much time on these pursuits? There is something missing in our lives but we cannot connect with what it is. We see others having holidays, vacations and trips to take them away from their surroundings in an effort to find what it is they are missing, to make themselves feel right with themselves. But the day after they get back from these breaks they realise nothing has changed, everything is still the same! Here, we are changing circumstances from one thing to another and think this is the right thing to do. They may change their career and prospects, and this is seen as a good effect upon our life, but truthfully nothing has changed. You go to this new career and after a few weeks, you feel you have not made the right move and was happier in the old career or job. The feeling within is still there and you go buy something that seems a good bargain. Yes, it was sold at a knock down price, and you have told everyone of your friends about this bargain, but you haven't used it yet and it is taking up room in the garage. So you move it to the attic to be with all the other stuff you have paid good cash for, but have not used. You have been looking for this happiness in the wrong place all the time you see. You will find excitement, a thrill and a spectacular sunset, that gives you something to talk about for a few weeks. Beyond this you still have this inner feeling of not connecting with what ever it is that is pulling and calling from a depth within you. It matters not, what circumstances you change or the situations you change, because you have not answered the inner calling to connect with the truth of your life, with the Purpose of your life. For there is a Plan for your life that you cannot create for yourself a Plan you have carried within you and you need to discover this plan. You are being called and everyone is being called, but they are way in their imagination and their search for happiness, going over and over the same journey for happiness instead of seeking within themselves. www.newmessage.org/the-message/volume-3/steps-knowledge

Hi, I haven't read the book but I think the root of this idea is to immerse yourself in what you are doing rather repeating the same one thing you like, over and over, just to be in the flow. Masters say even running errands is a meditation. So, if you live the same life immersed in doing the same simple or complicated things you have been doing, you can live the same life, but on a whole new and happier level. (btw.... I really love your channel and appreciate what you are doing. Keep it up. tc.)

Great video! Though, I think being on Facebook or Twitter arguing with people about politics can be extremely challenging and thus lead to high levels of anxiety, unless your trolling skills are high enough to make the person you are arguing with more anxious than you. Maybe that's why the internet is so toxic. We fight not to win an argument but to see who wins the anxiety battle. If we we win an argument our reward is peace of mind, and if we lose our punishment is anxiety. So many things to think about. Again, awesome video!

There is much to learn about consciousness - and state of awareness. How we believe and pursuit happiness is ultimately -driven from - how we first perceive what we are as a human entity.
There is the ID/EGO that has its field of awareness in the awakened state -and has its physical correspondence to the human body in the CNS (Central Nervous system).
There is the Soul - that has its field of awareness in the subconscious and/or dream realm - and has its physical correspondence to the human body in the sympathetic nervous system.
Then there is the Spirit - it has it’s field of awareness in patterning - archetype images - - and has its physical correspondence to the human body in the Endocrine System.
Any true - advances in psychology and medicine must have this understanding to truly progress. Without this understanding and knowledge - all fails!
To me the ‘FLOW’ (in terms of using it as a state of mind to perform at the highest level) is one’s ability to harness and the ability of having the faculty of the subconscious while during the awakened state. To link or bridge the subconscious to the conscious.
Ever have a dream you’re singing to a song in which you don’t even know the lyrics to?! And then when you wake up and try to remember - you just can’t!
That’s b/c the frontal cortex is limited while as the - … (well this is where it gets blurry) - not sure what part of the brain or body whether ethereal or physical - but something with - us and without us - within the Akasha perhaps - .. therein lies the ultimate of all - knowledge and it’s accessible to us! So much attention is needed in this for the Academia - unfortunately the current academia will list this as pseudo-science and mysticism - and will never get the attention it duly needs.
I propose that the Consciousness - has its field in the quantum realm - Where light as it may travel through time and space - therein lies the essence of our consciousness and perhaps our soul! I predict this will be both mathematically and scientifically proven - just as Paul Dirac proposed the quantum - anti-matter with his Dirac - equation.

And makes me happy. They want to tell me that it's not worth it and criticize me for it.

This is a great video that sums up flow theory well! I just wanted to add to the 'boredom' state. You might also hear it called the 'relaxation' state which I prefer. If you think about a musician practicing an easier piece or scale to warm up, they may be in the relaxation state, but if they do this for too long and/or repetitively, then they will fall into boredom. If you're looking for more information about flow theory, I suggest reading Csikszentmihalyi's article, "Flow in Schools: Cultivating Engaged Learning and Optimal Learning Environments."

Your video was extremely informative and useful.... thanks a lot for this valuable video
    One side note....
One major flaw of flow is you'll be so obsessed by your dreams that you'll be disconnected from your loved ones....so it's really important to maintain a good coordination between dream and general life

Great vid, pretty much summarizes his whole book. Just finished reading it, I did learn a lot about the anatomy of consciousness but I wouldn’t say I learned a lot about happiness. I mean when you truly think about it, what he puts forth is common sense, actually just obvious. But he came up with terms and graphs to explain it but at then end of the day - enjoyment is acquired from doing things we enjoy and to which we devote are attention. This is painfully self-evident.
Prob the best thing you can take away from it is that indeed the type of experience you will have when engaged in a particular situation depends a lot on your your attitude and predisposition. But again, this is flirting with the obvious. Serves as a nice reminder though.
Also, Mihaly himself doesn’t strike me as a very happy guy so it’s kinda hard to take his methods too seriously. Always look who’s giving the advice.

    Love your videos!
Another book highly related to this is "The Power of Now" by Tolle. He argues that you can sit still or watch TV and be in a state of flow/ presecence. You just need to change your perception of what you are doing, not necessarily what you're doing. Would love to see your review of this book as well :)

Congrats! Very close pronunciation. You missed the last "i" in pronouncing his last name, you pronounce it as "e" at the end. Put a sound of "e" at the end of the last name and you got it! It means in Hungarian "from" like how Germans say "van" before last name. Csík is a majority Hungarian speaking county in Transylvania, Romania It's capitol is CsÍkszereda, and many small towns have the prefix of Csík before the town name. That region of Transylvania is home of the Székely people (Szekler).

*FOCUS* is *FANTASIZING* about the *FINISH LINE*
Hence the *ONLY REASON* A *MAN OR WOMAN FAILS* is *BROKEN FOCUS*
    *LASER FOCUS* becomes *CONCENTRATION*
*CONCENTRATION* is the channelling of *ONE'S WILL* toward the *ACHIEVEMENT OF A SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE*
*ONE'S WILL* is the *KEY* to the *DOOR OF THE SOUL*
*ONE'S WILL* is the *POWER* to *OVERCOME AN OBSTACLE OR AN ENEMY*
Perched Peacefully on the *ZENITH OF CONCENTRATION* is *GENIUS*
    *GENIUS* is a *LOYAL SERVANT*
    Once approached, He *WILL ASK*
    *HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU?*
Ultimately, the *FLOW STATE* is located at the *ZENITH OF CONCENTRATION*

Money can't make you happy, sure. But...
money keeps you from being miserable. In some aspects (most of them), like; if you don't feel satisfied with your old Volvo, then you probably going to have bad thoughts about that situation witch makes you miserable.
If u got the money to buy the new porch then u will decrease the bad thoughts which will keep you from being miserable.
Its not about what you buy, its about the satisfaction you get from buying!
Witch in turn leads to less bad thoughts and a happier life.
And don't forget, money is freedom.
The more money you'll earn - the more freedom you'll have!

Aristotle said that money does not make a person happy, but a person can't be happy with absolutely no money. It's like food, sleep or water. Without enough of it, I'm miserable but once I have enough getting more doesn't make me any happier

It’s funny you also mention Frankl cause I recently heard that Stimulus & Response gap came from Aurelius too. And apparently Epictetus if I’m following? (I know Aurelius was a student of Stoicism) It’s fascinating how things get revived and repackaged over the decades and millennia.

Interesting ideas and a good summary. I wonder how the author addresses the bad side of "Flow" though. I wouldn't say that encouraging one to focus on one's tasks to the point where you forget to eat is a good thing - that's overwork and can lead to burnout. There always has to be a healthy balance of productivity with work-life balance, and the ability to down-tools when you need to take a break.

Wouldnt this just apply to rats or hamsters running on a wheel? If the idea to happiness is to achieve mind-numbing through a high-level energy absorbing task... is that really happiness? or a diversion from your own existence

I have always thought of myself as a jack of all trades. I am currently trying to pin down an area to master. How specific should I get? I love creating art. I am assuming that the more I specific I am the better chance I have at getting close to mastery. I love painting and I love illustrating. They can be the same and they can also be different. Just curious on your thoughts.

It just hit me after watching Naruto what "Chakra" actually is. It's how long you can stay in the flow state for. People who can stay in it for longer are able to accomplish more because of it. When you use up your "chakra" you go out of flow state. The chemicals that make up the flow state and the amount your body produces is your chakra.

I think the writer didnt emphasize much on toxic shame ( culture grip on individuals ) also the person own inner trauma and demons , for instance if your existence was run by traumatized attachments, you would mostly be inauthentic and would look for constant feedbacks from the environment that feed that wound like people pleasing , to reach flow first you must untangle these issues and fucking know yourself inside and out and how you do things unconsciously , do you need to become something to not hate yourself or are you already operating on a pattern that without that pattern you would hate yourself and generate self hate … only when you unravel these things you can concentrate 1000000% without external forces effecting your internal world, the idea is you want to reach a state of feeling and believing that you’re “ enough “ so when you face a difficult challenge you wont break spiritually only then when you’re free from toxic shame you become enough and with it the courage and hyperfocus could be manifested
