  • Boyz In The Hood is at the top of many lists in terms of greatest hood films, but there are many to consider. Menace II Society is a great one and films like Juice, South Central and Paid in Full also come to mind. With that being said there is only one hood movie I personally feel deserves the title of "Best Hood Movie". So today lets take a look at Why I consider Boyz N The Hood the best hood movie of all time!

    Boyz in the Hood was the first Hood movie I've ever seen. I've seen them all and must agree that it stuck with me the most closely followed by Menace 2 Society. Growing up in the inner city, I saw the difference between how we lived even though we were on the same row. I had friends like Doughboy, Ricky and Odogg. The depiction of the innocent bystander being killed is what really did it. As usual, well done video bro🤎

      It was one of the first I saw too. Especially from being from California, I couldn't really not hear about Boyz in The Hood or Menace II Society. They both captured elements of things I was familiar with, but Boyz In The Hood I connect with more because I could directly relate to one of the characters (Tre). Like you I had friends who were like Doughboy and have even lost some good ones like Ricky. It was all too familiar. Luckily I didn't directly know any O-Dogs lol.

    I liked how you highlighted the scene where Tre decides to get out of the car. Watching that, all I could think was “there’s no going back if you stay with them Tre… you’ll be at the least an accessory to murder and probably spend most of your life in prison”. I had no idea you had such a similar story and I’m proud that you made the same choice as Tre. If you remember I was the commenter from the Menace 2 Society video who’s aspiring to be a police officer. Both of these movies are fantastic and while, I probably can’t really relate to either, I know that the decision Tre made to get out of the car was probably one of the most difficult of his life. But though it’s far from the only thing that will solve the problems facing “The Hood”, good people like Tre and you making the right decision to stay out of that same cycle of gang violence is a very admirable thing. Best of luck to you and keep up the great work!

      Hey, I do remember! And I agree. I think as a youngster this was the only hood movie I felt truly connected to, largely because of this scene. I was in a very similar situation as this, and watching it unfold was like watching myself. I don't think I've felt that way in any other movie, ever. Even though I connect to that scene personally, just as an adult I think its the most important scene in the movie, for every reason you said. It shows that ultimately the most important steps we can take to break the cycle come from our own actions. Outside factors play a part, but ultimately we cannot rely on them.
      I also appreciate your ability to to empathize with how difficult life and decisions can be for those in certain communities. People aren't always just bad for no reason. Sometimes they are kids, growing up with a lack of positive resources and or influences. Being able to understand that, in my opinion, is a great step to becoming a great Law Enforcement Officer. Wishing you the best in your journey! And I appreciate the support. ✊🏾

    I was an upper middle class whiteboy when my mom rented this when it hit VHS. She and dad had split up a year prior and she was so moved by it, she made me watch it. It’s still a favorite to this 43 year old. I’ve got 2 boys now. Sometimes I hear Furious Styles when words come out my mouth talking to those two Princes. Masterful acting by everyone involved.

    Boyz N the Hood is my favorite movie of all time. Because it was made to send a positive message my mother's friend took us to the theater to see this when I was 7. Initially, I didn't take in the message the way John Singleton wanted the audience to, because of my lack of understanding and maturity, 7 the first time I saw it. But the more and more I saw this movie throughout my childhood and teenage years the message became more clear. I definitely saw Doughboy as the coolest character of the movie but I grew to understand that Tre was the best character of the movie. Tre actually had the respect and love from all in the film and he never had to do anything "gangsta" to get that love and respect. He was seen as the guy who was solid and true because that's the way his father raised him to be. Doughboy, Monster, & Dookie were dealers but they knew that Tre was on the right path and they didn't envy him or resent him for that because Tre didn't look down on them or turn his back on them. He was actually more cool with them than Ricky seemed to be. Now at 39, I've seen this movie nearly 100 times and the best version is the director's cut where John explains a lot of the thought that went into certain scenes because it really gave my favorite movie more life. Such as the scene of break-in and the burglar escaping before Furious shot him, that really happened to John's dad and the shoe was on the front porch which led to the kids in the neighborhood finding out who broke in. My favorite scene is Tre telling Doughboy "you still got one brother left". And Doughboy appreciated that sincerely because they really did see themselves as brothers. Definitely glad that Tre made it out.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  Рік тому +1

      This is a perfect understanding and resembles my own thoughts to the film. When I first saw it, just like you I was drawn to doughboy, but as I got older I realized how much I directly related to Tre. I think Tre is the most important character forsure, but personally my favorite character is Furious. You are spot on with Tre though, he truly was respected just by being himself and in a weird way, I think Doughboy even respected him for getting out of the car at the end. He respected that he stayed true to who he really was. And you are also right about that scene. Gut-wrenching, but also heartwarming to here Tre say that. I really appreciate the comment brother! ✊🏾

    10:48 You summed us both up with this. I grew up just outside of L.A. and was a teen in the 80's. Just like every other predominantly black area the drugs and gangs changed the entire landscape where I lived. "At times I even walked the same path as them." Man, this right here hit hard. I look back on some of the choices I made and I can only shake my head. I was one of the lucky ones. I always managed to bring myself back around before it was too late. A lot of dudes I grew up with since elementary school went all-in. Whether it was gangs or drugs. Eventually they all paid for it in one way or another. I hold no judgement towards them because I understand them and I always got love for'em.. Excellent analysis, bro.
    As for the Boyz In the Hood, before I even started the video, Furious was my first as to why I also think Boyz in the Hood is the best. Overall, and as your analysis points out, it's the most well-rounded of all the others.

I got extremely lucky and am forever grateful for the positive influences I've had in my life. I think that's why I appreciate Furious' character because he reminded me of many people in my life.
      I also appreciate his character because it showed America in general that there are positive black role models and fathers. It was great to see!

    I also wanted to add that both Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr was close in age (which is crazy because they’re like over ten years apart lmao and I found that out a few months ago). Furious Styles is definitely the father figure Black people yearned for (I know I do).
    When you think about it, there are movies that tried to impersonate the feeling/story of Boyz N the Hood. Every region in the US had to have their own story similar to it (see ATL, Juice, New Jersey Drive, etc).

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  Рік тому +2

      Yeah they were all pretty old in this film..lol but for some reason it works still. Laurence Fishburne is wildly beleiveable as the older father figure. He's honestly my favorite character in the film. Could be because he reminds me of my dad or could be simply because he's just that good of a character.
      And definitely. There were hood movies before and some after. And Boyz In The Hood may not be everyone's favorite, but it's definitely the quintessential hood movie. ✊🏾

      He was almost perfect, but he focused just on his son, which is understandable, but his friends could have dragged tre down. He could have tried to be a father figure to doughboy, seeing how his mom made doughboy into ain't shit like your father. Doughboy was smart just thought this was all that life had to offer. If men all men just stayed on guard for children in need of a nice or kind word when they are about to do something stupid because everyone keeps telling you that. Ricky was smart, had no confidence in his mind. Got distracted. Imagine if someone told him it doesn't matter if you think you can or you think you can't. Either way you're correct. Fake it till you make it. Keep repeating SHIIIIIT! I got this! I always do!, eventually you will forget u were doubtful. And because it's a positive affirmation it will leave you confident just because of the energy or vibration on the words as you use them.

    This movie is the quintessential hood classic. Rewatching this as an adult i realize Ricky & Doughboy’s mom favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did. If Trey & Ricky wouldn’t have gone to Crenshaw after leaving Compton the outcome would have been different.

    Man I agree man I went through some of the same shìt Trey did too man. I like how this movie doesn’t glorify revenge or violence in the best way. That’s why I feel it’s better compared to menance to society due to the endings I felt Doughboy needed to be killed to convey the message the best about where that life gets you while odog lives in the end. Yes he goes to jail but he doesn’t get as big of a consequence I think that’s why people gravitate more towards his character than doughboy and want to be like him because he didn’t get killed in the end. Also I love they have furious in this movie and what he represents too. He reminds me of my uncle who was like a father figure to me in a dark time. I also agree mostly with everything you said also.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  Рік тому +1

      I hear ya. I know there are a lot of "Tre's" out there so it was nice to see something like us represented in film. And I completely agree that the film doesnt glorify the violence, in fact it does the opposite. Chooses to show the heartbreaking side of the violence. Menace I think uses violence to show it always catches up with you in the end. Both do it well, I just think Boyz in the Hood is a little more meaningful. And Doughboy dying is a perfect representation of the ongoing cycle. Because like you said it doesn't glorify the violence, so John Singleton choosing to have Doughboy die was important because it shows that revenge only leads to more violence. I personally think Boyz in The Hood deserves moore credit for its writing as it covers more notes of the hood life than any other film in my opinion.
      Thanks for sharing all of this too! ✊🏾

    Boyz N The Hood is the best hood film and I personally claim John Singleton as one of the greatest directors for this film to have been his feature length debut at 19 years old, I believe it was. To have THIS level of nuance, key elements of the culture used in the characters themselves, and such an understanding is simply incredible in my opinion. Furious is my favorite fictional film father bc he was everything you don’t see in other hood films and he simply reminds me of my stepfather. And something I just recently thought about now that I’m a mother: Ricky and Doughboy’s mom lost both of her children within two weeks of each other, and although she is shown in the film as not really caring about Doughboy as much as Ricky bc of Ricky’s prospects and possibly her own experience with the men that fathered her sons, I do think that level of loss affects her beyond what we got to see. And not only that, now she’s left to help Ricky’s girlfriend raise his son, which continues the cycle of young Black men being raised without a father or father figure. Your coverage of this film has been refreshing, interesting and honestly just reaffirming what a lot of us within the culture understand about this movie and in general. Loving these reviews ✊🏽

Seeing the “transformation” from Doughboy to Nick in “Are We There Yet” shows his amazing range as an actor. I do understand why they didn't, though. I think both films represent two different sides of the hood life. Tre was fortunate he had a dad who was willing to do anything for his parents. Caine, on the other hand, had no parents, only his grandparents and Mr. Washington, who couldn't be there all the time. It was easier for Caine to get trapped in the street life. I think that's why Furious, being present all the time mattered, it literally saved Tre.

    I like Boyz in the Hood, but I think Menace II Society aged better. It felt grittier and more real. And while I agree Furious was a great character and a positive black father that other hood movies lack. It somewhat counteracted that positive message by a mostly negative portrayal of black mothers. Angela Basset's character barely shows up after the beginning of the film. And Ricky's death seemed like a silly scene. He's grown up in the hood his entire life and seen people get killed. Yet he blows it off and says, aw, they aren't going to do nothing. I know he was naive, but that made zero sense.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  8 місяців тому +1

      I can agree with that. I think Menace had a more straight forward, bleak story whereas Boyz in the Hood was definitely more of a drama, with higher production value, heavier emphasis on the (admittedly cheesy) dialogue at times so you could definitely make the argument it felt slightly more melodramatic and unrealistic.
      For the other points, just to play Devils Advocate, while I agree more of Bassetts character would've been great, I think most mothers in hood movies in general are the strong, positive ones while the fathers are the negative ones so I think the switch up here was necessary, especially in the 90s.
      And while in a perfect world, I do think Ricky should've been more aware of the company he kept and the consequences that came with that. However, anyone who grew up in the hood knew a dude like Ricky. The athlete who wasn't involved in the street life. The one everyone left alone because they wanted him to make it out, and I think that was just his naive, and dare I say, ignorant perspective. I knew many guys like Ricky in high-school who thought they were untouchable because they were the athlete and "cool" with everyone. So, while dumb and naive, lol, it wasn't too unrealistic.

    • @pelicanhill3251

      @@itakeonmovies I get what you are saying, and I agree, it was great to see a positive father in a hood movie for once. But it just felt like they hit us over the head with the message. Not only was Furious a good father and good for Tre, they had to go overboard and make Doughboy and Ricky's mother so over the top awful.
      As for Ricky, I get what you are saying. Didn't grow up in the hood but heard plenty of stories about athletes who were treated differently. However, just 30 seconds earlier, the dude was running for his life. Climbing fences, dodging dogs, etc. So he seemed to know his life was in danger then. But all of a sudden he changes his mind?

    Hello.I have few questions. I am from eastern Europe .I am not an american but iv grown up with american movies.I specifically like movies about ''da hood '' and that part of the american reality . I have always wondered about a few thigngs and they are as follows : Why so many black men seem to abandon the baby/family /mother .Why when a boy grows up without a father ,he does not hate that fact and tries to be a good husband and a father to his future family.Why boys turn up to be the ''father ''they never had or hated .Another question : Is it that hard to escape the hood environment ? Cant you go to another ,calmer zone of the city,get a job and rent an apartment and start a new life ? Also why does the government does not do shit about these hoods ?

    Would dough boy been doughboy if his mama treated them both the same? Furious said if it wasnt for her mouth he might have given her a chance. That means that family woulda been 2 parents 3 boys. Could have even made sure Lil cris and craY legs didnt become wheelbound and, a crackhoe thermometer.
    All the problems stem from fatherless homes. Men have been gaslit for decades, that we leave. A father cant do his duty if a womans always trying to be independent and if a Man does what she wants then he is allowed. To be the kind of fathed she wants. No family dynamics have ever worked with an emasculated father. Men need respect/love first(to men love is respect), appreciation(are we a wallet is it our only drive/role earn money and don't stop? Obedience, stop assuming abuse and mistreatment, if you are careful and pay attention you will be with a man thats smart ambitious forethought, observant, all the traits that a wonderful father would have. Logical and enotionally stable stoic. which is why men are the leaders, not because of their ego and they don't think women are capable. They just know from their family females, that a lot of times, not always, emotiona are will color the way they observe or feel about how to proceed best. Men unless its because they are seriously injured or family is that emotions will do the same. A good man will slow down take an extra minute count to ten or wait 24 hours, for adrenaline and mind y
    To clear, then they can move forward and plan while takinf all factors into consideration. Men especially warriors don't stay in a hightened sense of alert. He loves his family hea not making decisions to be sexist or prove a point. He may be thinking about fast events that provide a better choice for mothers and children. When your families well being or life is on the line. He needs a family to be a team, he coach mom or oldest son is captain. All focused on one plan one path. Success is all but guaranteed. Might have 1 family in a thousand where father has failed to succeed 2 or 3 times, maybe army injury plate in head slowed cognitive ability. He should put his pride to the side, if he chose a good mother. She has followed and supported him before injury. She learned how he used to operate, now because she was so cross t dot your i, do a damn fine impersonation of him. Same for injured dad, he appreciated the little things, would be impressed how well she could anticipate his needs. That he also learned aupport role from knowing her so well. Either way it only ever works when leaders dont worry or second guess wives and vice versa. All of which rubs off on children. Maybe even friends and neighbors struggling in their home. When you see a family firing on all cylinders its impressive, if they are not messing up every week how cab I replicate their success.
    No other women in the world want independent lives from theirs families and their men. Stop deciding if you keep the baby or not you do. Make the husband feel like hes not an idiot good for dor nothing fuck up. If he finds it else where and never at home. You ran him off, hopefully the courts automatically give children to the non divorce filing parent. Especially no fault divorce, cheating or DV is different. You want to be in charge, you propose, provide protect, till death do us part. You expect him to propose and be traditional,submit obey love respect support. No single friends. No male friends dont make bim beg ask or nag for sex. Unless you want to ask beg nag for money. You always make him feel your love physically everyday without him ever asking. Watch if ur man isnt Superman, stayin in shape out earning the block takin care of male house duties. Men are simple unconditionally loving want to impress, sweep you off your feet everyday old school romantics. men need a highschool course on female nature and so do women. Best life os marrying highschool sweethearts for 80 years 6 kids 36 grand kids 72 great grandkids died on the same evening, family living all over the world fillinf every career path possible at one point or another, families fortune combined is in the billions,30 % is donated or thithed and volunteer work done as a family. Your family is so great they are worse than the brady bunch. Thats not a bad thing especially since very few family get to this level and stay independent from satanic planet.
    Ultimately fathwra fucked up by giving them the freedom when we see its not working.feminism needs to be sent back to first wave. Only after 25 or before with a

      Fuck my life! Has emotion and energy woven into every syllable. All negative and saying it will leave a fresh coat of negative reinforcement..
      MY LIFE FUUUUCKIN RULES!!! change the order add a word, now you have an affirmation that will leave you content with your life as it is.
      DUDE WTF HOW IS MY LIFE HITTING JACKPOT EVERYDAY!! SSSHHHH GOTTA KEEP IT TO MYSELF. OR ILL BE STUCK WITH A WONDERFUL WIFE AND AMAZING CHILDREN!!!
      realistic affirmations don't matter it's not a goal you are working toward. Every word intrinsically has a unique energy patter aka vibrations. There was a experiment done with freezing ice and words. A scientist filled a petri dish with water and spoke a word unique to each some positive some negative. 12 hours later, he examined the dishes. To his surprise each word had its own pattern and condition. Negative words were hate ugly death, each has some non symmetrical a
      Pattern hate looked like a withered Snowflake ugly looked ugly not inviting. Death has almost no pattern just chaos no order., positives love thanks awesome. Again each unique. What's more it was repeat able and 9 out of 10 they would be almost identical. 1 out of ten, scientist bumped into freezer patterns remained similar except for a slight alteration to pattern.
      Long and short of it every word has a unique energy meaning pattern vibrations. The point is keep your vocabulary strictly to positive words and, practice new powerful affirmation for what you want to attract. It's not a magic cheat code. It's like self hypnosis. Saying jackpot for 30 minutes, an hour later you forgot about saying the word but you notice you feel like you did when you won't poker night with your buddies , you treat everyone like you did that night generous to everyone you meet. So much that you give a millionaire a 100 bucks just cus you felt like you should. He is offended firsts but you explain what happened. Dollars to donuts of that's not exactly how he became who he is now. With the same birthday, too much of a coincidence to not keep you around for luck or jackpots ! The fact is you never fuckin know, all this are possible and all things will come to pass, just on a timeline you can't understand.. so fuck you life!? Or JACKPOT LIFE!!
