It's a shame that C&O 614 is no longer in operating condition anymore as this was a handsome and enjoyable steam locomotive to observe in operation. The C&O rr had an attractive roster of 12 J3 class 4-8-4 type locomotives and these engines were among my favorite types of 4-8-4 engines that were built by Lima locomotive works back during the steam era. I really want the 614 to be restored and returned to operation in the future as I really admire this locomotive.
You never know. A lot of people didn't think N&W 611 would ever come back after 1994, and a number of folks thought it was doomed again after Amtrak stopped allowing excursions out of Roanoke. Though difficult challenges were encountered, both times they were wrong. 611's return and ability to find new places to run on is proof that her C&O "cousin" may still have hope. I just saw the Greenbrier the other day in Clifton Forge, that old gal looked like she might have some life left in her, but time will tell.
I was up there got either this one or the previous weekend’s runs. Will never forget it. They had it double heading with a SuzyQ Mikado the day I was there.
The 614 is parked in Clifton Forge, VA . I believe it was purchased by WV governor Jim Justice and painted green with gold trim. He planned to make trips from DC to the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. I believe the liability was too much for the railroad to let it run on their rails. We can’t have steam trains, but the Amtrak just wrecked last month and it’s supposed to be safe.
My father was watching all of this and told me that they were doing the runbys for a photo shoot. The burned so much coal that they ran out and had to be towed back to Hoboken. It was great to see and hear this old train.
It's actually a custom whistle built by Bob Swanson which has the tuning of a K5LA. They have practically the same notes, but a SP 6-chime is much mellower.
No, it looks much better!😊 The differences: Sand dome in front of the water dome Headlight is pilot-mounted High pilot deck Solid “cowcatcher” Makes for a very “brawny” look the NKP and PM locos lacked. But all still very classic in their look.
They had added the cars to allow for all of the people who wanted to go in the excursion run. Of course if you wanted to ride in the vintage cars you had to pay more.

Hopefully when Ross Rowland the man who runs 614 gets the proper permission we may see it running yet again.
I’m more worried about who will get it after Ross Rowland Dies. If a museum gets it, then it will never be restored to operation
@@HuntOfficial1776 I'd rather a museum get it than Ross Rowland continuing to own it.

WOrd on the street is she might be moving somewhere else!
I was there for at least 2 excursions out of NJ to Port Jervis with Engine 614. So exciting !!!!
I was up there got either this one or the previous weekend’s runs. Will never forget it. They had it double heading with a SuzyQ Mikado the day I was there.
614 was awesome to watch. Loud and powerful.
We moved here from the Bronx that day...missed the opportunity to witness the engine
Ahhh the sound of a great Steam i miss those running around my area. I was just in port Jervis for the Fire Perade!!!

I was at the Turntable last month. There's a couple of passenger cars from the Greenwood Lake route and an old Diesel that looks like it still runs.
#fireup614
@HardRockCafeNJ1992 . Yes, one of the Fall Specials from Hoboken, NJ run by Ross Rowlands
thank you so much for posting this. 614 is my all time favorite steam engine.
Although C&O 614 does normally carry a whistle tuned to sound like a K5LA, this is definitely a SP 6 chime
What amazing images of this powerful machine Ray, and that lighting was perfect for filming...Bob

It was great to see and hear this old train.
Calvin De Mond I was there in Port was unbelievable sight as she came in . really nice day and yes she ran out of coal.
I'm thinking of watching over her so she once again see the light of day running excursions.
Love that SP 6 Chime
The priming from 4.30 to after 5.00 was a disgrace.
Music to my ears.
I wish there was a way to triple like videos.

It only wore the K5LA inspired whistle on Chessie. Whistle in the video is an SP 6.
Ladies and gentlemen, Behold the True power of the steam locomotive, what was the power behind our great nation
I'd like to see her steam up again.
This.... Is awesome! Thanks so much for posting this.
must of been one of its last runs before it went cold again.
I believe the 614 had stoker problems. Nice video.
Yes, I removed more than once NJ Transit diesels had to pull her fit that reason.
i like dat whistle
Looks like C&O 614 Greenbrier had Santa Fe 3751's 6-chime whistle on her. Doesn't it?
Transportation Productions the whistle does sound like 3751's 6-chime.
It's a Reading 6 Chime
Okay I don't know why I said RDG 6 chime. I think I looked at the comments before I watched the video. It sounds like an SP or ATSF 6 Chime
The whistle for this trip is a Southern Pacific step top 6 chime.
@@Jello12 Thanks. Hard to believe this was 20 years ago today.
What does the aux tender say? With the big white square on it?
NJ Transit
Soon to be running again
Word on the forums is she might be getting new life!
hey that train looks like nkp and pm berkshire!
No, it looks much better!😊
The differences:
Sand dome in front of the water dome
Headlight is pilot-mounted
High pilot deck
Solid “cowcatcher”
Makes for a very “brawny” look the NKP and PM locos lacked. But all still very classic in their look.
They sound exactly the same to me lol
priming?
To bad they put those commuter cars on the train. It would have looked much better.

was this a train ride?
