I've had a Sony Alpha 350 for years. I've covered weddings, portraits, proms, family shoots and all sorts. It still works great and I earned a living from it for a while. I've still got it too. It's easy to use and the Sony software that comes with it also works just fine (on Windows XP.. Lol). Cheap as chips to buy now as well. Why pay more?
Had an A550 for years. Good times and happy memories. So exciting to learn the essentials of digital photography. Any DSLR after 2010 is good enough for that.
My first "real" camera was a Sony A55, which was released in August of 2010. Honestly, it was a great little camera. It had GPS, Phase Detect AF, shot 10fps in burst mode, shot 1080p30 video (which still used phase detect AF), it also had IBIS, as well as a fully articulating 3" screen that actually flipped and articulated down rather than to the side. It was definitely way ahead of its time. Even being my first camera and not knowing how to use it to its potential, I look back at the photos I took and am still pleased with the results. Sometimes, old tech is still great tech.

@@Animaduniversum Leica M9, but they have peeling issues on their Kodak CCD's, the Sony uses a Japanese CCD designed in less than 6 months, also the price difference is no brainer. If you want larger, most medium formats before 2016 used CCD's
I have quite an extensive collection of Minolta AF lenses, I did reviews on many of them - they hold up well mostly even on modern cameras A mount is the unsung bargain of the camera world - lot of good lenses out there!
Good video. But if you want an AMAZING cheap Sony camera, then the Alpha A57 is the boss. 16 mp Cmos, 12 FPS, tilling screen with 921k dots. And awesome low light performance. I've had mine for about 7 years now and love it, it even matches full frame at low ISO.
Technology is in circle, but most especially, Sony has been producing better sensor. You won't believe me that I'm still using my Sony a500 for professional job like wedding and some other events.
Got one too, 2020, because of it being one of the last CCD cameras. Love it. As a starting lens I bought the Tamron 18-270 for the time being. Planning to get some Minolta lenses as well. Easy camera to learn. Nice BW images. Glad to see other photographers having the same idea.
@@dowhatyouwill More film-like in my opinion. Nostalgic feel. It's just the look that's different to the CMOS images that I like. Choosing digital cameras is like choosing film in the old days. Fujfilm's X-trans also produce very nice BWs.
I've had this for a while and took it out yesterday. Still works. Still Enjoying it. Yes its a little clunky and not as fast, but I've taken tons of great pictures with it.
I must be crazier because I just bought a 6000 shutter count A390 body in 2023 to utilize all my Minota AF & Tamrom lenses I'm using on my A850. It's not as weather proof as the full frame but with 2 memory cards and lens stabilization, I'm thrilled. Now the 50 mm becomes a great portrait lens especially with the CCD sensor.
Fun review. :) I bought that exact same camera with the kit lens recently on eBay for two bucks. I really liked it too. Not a bad camera at all and such cheap glass. Of course I cleaned it up and sold it, but now I kind of wish I still had it.

I just bought one with the SAM 18-55mm, a bunch of batts + charger and with sub-2,000 clicks. I have over a dozen classic, power zoom and xi lenses (50mm to Big Beer Can) and wanted a digital body. I still shoot my Maxxum bodies as well. Thanks for the great vid'!
it's now 2023, still regularly shooting with my Sony Alpha trio of bodies ( A100, A65, A900 ) 😊 In no hurry to change anytime ps ( I don't own the Bearcan F4 ) LoL
ps, the A900 can identify when you attach a apsc lens when I need it's fast, near silent focusing ability I borrow my Sony DT 16-55 SSM (apsc) lens for use on the A900. ( allow the A900 is a " Full Frame " it has the ability to use apsc/crop sensor lens. There is an inbuilt menu option from which you can select whether you want the camera to switch to apsc mode or remain in full frame, however if you do decide to switch to apsc mode, it now shoots as 12Mp ( not 24 ) If you remain in full frame mode, depending on the lens focal length and aperture expect varying degrees of vinetting ) !

Years ago before I was shooting digital, I had a Minolta Maxxum film SLR with a few lenses. I should have bought a Sony DSLR at the time to make use of those lenses but I ended up switching to Nikon anyways. I didn't even think about those Minolta lenses working on those early Sony DSLRs. Great video Scott. Just one little thing about the video, watch your audio levels for the music, I thought I was going to blow my speakers lol. Scared me hahaha but otherwise looks awesome. I use Resolve too, but I'm not very good at it. It's very powerful but very confusing to use too.
I have this camera too. I bought it used. Its been amazing and I was using it daily! There's a problem with it now, I think maybe the shutter motor. So for several years I've been heartbroken, can't find anyone to work on it, don't want to send it all the way to Sony in Japan. I'm thinking now trying to maybe sell it for parts.... and don't know of an affordable camera to replace it with. 😞
So, this might seem like a weird comment in 2021, but I'm poor and the best camera I have right now is a Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd so like, I'm thinking of upgrading to one of these since I found one that's sort of in my price range, but is still expensive compared to the things I usually buy. I'll be going on a remote wilderness trip next year, and am at least looking for an upgrade I can afford before I head out there. I found one of these I *could* afford though it might be a slight burden. What I'm trying to ask is this: I haven't got any old lenses kicking around, but there's a chance some might end up in my local thrift shops, as that has happened before. Should I take a bargain on this which might be a clear upgrade and find additional lenses, or might it be better to find a fixed-lens camera from the same era and maybe get a higher quality out of it? I'd usually go for the multi-lens option, but considering how cheap the fixed-lens options are from this time, I'm doubting myself a little bit. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you if you read this!
I know you didn't go over it, but that proprietary shoe mount was a pain too. Fun review. I don't recall loving my A300's colors, but I was a non analog shooting hipster back then. 🤣 I kinda wish I was an analog shooter back then. All this analog equipment would have bottomed out in process. Damn. And yes, your definitely crazy, but I have 15, 30, and 50 year old cameras, so you're in good company. A couple of them are analog though.
I could grab it under 200 today I would still mess around with it . Lots of old Minolta glass that was actually quite good I still use a ton of my Minolta on my Sony. The big issue is people trying to get ridiculous prices for older cameras. A year or two ago I think I got the a 55 in a 65 it really is a great camera even the filming is beautiful I also got an original I want to say it Sony r the first one with the weird LCD screen on it that thing is still capable of taking interesting pictures in black and white for sure I think it was from 95 or 98 and yes maybe I'll see you in the next video😀😀

Actually I just tried that early this year, not knowing it was a thing. My brother had a reflex maxxus which I believe got broken and my dad owns that A390, but the beer can lens mounted on that A390 renders some beautiful macro photos. Scott, question. I got an a390 and the beercan lens. I noticed that when mounted the a390 shows f5.6 and not f4. Im assuming this is the same case with you as well because of the tech gap? Also, my left thumb mode selector wheel, i think, is broken. It won't select any mode other than M, Landscape, S, and Night, when positioned at different modes. Even then, the dial position and mode don't correspond to each other (M = Landscape, Auto = S). Have you heard anything about this and possible workaround? Thanks a lot!!!

I had an S5 Pro. expose for shadows, recover the highlights. It was a nice camera, but i came here because there was something magical about my CCD cameras at iso 100. Now shopping for an A350-a390
David Tiffany The s5pro also has a CCD sensor, so I’m not sure if the a390 has anything over the Fuji other than higher megapixel count and perhaps cheaper used prices.
@@imnguyen6658 Oh yeah, but doesnt it have dual 6mp sensors? I had one briefly and got a few good shots with it -- but i never compared it apples to apples against my pentax K10d or my Sony A100. All i know is that at iso 100 in good light the 10mp CCD just blows me away. Even more then my latest Sony A7R2 with 28-75mm Tamron F2.8 (i blame the lens here though)
David Tiffany I read that the S5 is effectively 8mpx, but who’s counting right? I can’t confirm or deny that cameras with CCDs are better because there are other factors that contribute to the overall image such as sensor, CFA’s, and the photographer’s skill, but in my amateurish experience the images that I was able to capture with the S5 has the best skin tones out of all the numerous cameras used in the past 13yrs. I am trying hard from buying another camera such as an A390 to compare against the S5 and you’re not helping in the least bit. 😂

My Dad gifted me a A330 DSLR a few years back and this semester I am taking a photography class for College. Do you think this camera will cut it even if made back in 2009 or would you recommend looking into a newer camera?

Although I don't know if they expected me to roll in with a 13 year old camera! Thanks for the lightning fast reply by the way! I only really asked partially about pursuing a new camera because I already had an interest in buying a mirrorless camera for video streaming. Is there a good "budget" one that you might recommend?
The Minolta lenses are dirt cheap, so I would go Sony for that reason. I got a 50 f/1.7 a 28 f/2.8 a 35-70 f/4 and the 70-210 f/4 "beer can" lens mentioned here, all for $120. Cant beat the price.
Is it good for beginners? I found one second hand for 99 dollars but I have no idea if it's worth it. It's one of the cheapest cameras I can find, everything else is over my budget

I bought a Sony a390 when it first came out. It's 2021 and I still have it and it still works great.

A390 is the last large CCD sensor camera ever made if I am correct, so that makes this camera a very interesting curiosity to say the least.

Ive used my a300 for professional shoots. Clients love the look. I do fashion and portraits so I dont need blazing fast AF, 30fps bursts etc...

It is a little weather sealed . The body has built in weather seals and a red seal for the lens that you can see when you take the lens off .

Hello I own Sony a390 with standard 18-50 lens. Is it worth to buy few used lenses for cheap? Or is it better to save up and buy new body and lenses?
Better lenses will make a bigger difference.
It has image stabilization built into the body. Very uncommon during the time period, most were built into the lens at the time.
It is also great today.
But i found and bought a sony a 65.
Who is a bit better. With 24 MP.

Hey should I rather buy the Nikon D60 or a Sony alpha 290?
The Minolta lenses are dirt cheap, so I would go Sony for that reason. I got a 50 f/1.7 a 28 f/2.8 a 35-70 f/4 and the 70-210 f/4 "beer can" lens mentioned here, all for $120. Cant beat the price.
