      That's great Matheus, I will connect everything to contemporary harmony in the next videos.

      Thanks Mike. Counterpoint starts like Mr. Miagi's "Wax on wax off"... If you remember. And the outro things, it was something intuitive I recorded. That vibraphone sound from the Nord is sweet.

    I guess this video serie wasn't not so popular, but I think is a very good sintesis and should have to continue. I'm reading the Salzer's book, based on the Fux's one, and you don't skip any condition to make a good canti. Thank you and please continue. Greetings from Colombia.

      Hi Andrés, thank you, that's encouraging :) I think I'll complete the series, adding references to contemporary composition - as done in the Salzer book with classical music. I like seeing the study of counterpoint as getting in the laboratory - like in the movie Jurrasic Park to see how it all starts :)
      These basic musical 'laws of attraction' can successfully explain many sophisticated harmonic progressions.
      Greetings from Israel.

    I hope you complete the full series. If not, please take off the (Lesson 1 of 6) in the title. It's cruel to play with our emotions like this.)

    It looks like the technique wasn't invented by Fux, and he wasn't the first one to write a treaty about counterpoint. But it was the most complete at his time, and also a good pedagogical tool with its increasing difficulty.

    • @dr.guyshkolnik_composer
      @dr.guyshkolnik_composer  4 роки тому

      Ben Ça-alors. Yes, definitely not the first treaty, the book Study of Fugue by Mann goes over several important works by earlier theorists from previous centuries. The difference here is that Fux, a contemporary of Bach, is looking at it from the perspective of a modern
      composer. He doesn’t want to sound like a renaissance composer. It’s like a laboratory of the ‘building blocks’ of tonal music. That’s why Mozart taught it to his students, and Beethoven practiced it extensively.

    Will you continue this series? I was glad to find it, as I'm beginning to study this area. I am using the textbook and workbook "Harmony In Context".

      wes3410 I might at some point, yes. I see it as a kind of a laboratory where harmony is born.

    Heya Dr. Guy, idea for you. Care to do an analysis on Russell Ferrante's chord substitutions? I was listening to Bang! Zoom (collaboration with Bobby McFerrin) and really impressed with the simple melody backed with wonderful lush chords. Ferrante uses polychords so well... I would appreciate an analysis so I can get a better handle on them in my playing.

    Thank you, one quick question. I read somewhere that the cantus firmus should only contain consonant intervals. However, the same website (as you do as well in this video) said that the cantus firmus follows mostly stepwise motion. But aren't the minor and major second dissonant intervals? How do these rules go together, or have I misunderstood something?

    • @dr.guyshkolnik_composer
      @dr.guyshkolnik_composer  Рік тому +1

      Seconds (minor or major) are dissonant intervals when the two notes are played together (as when two flutes play C and Db)
      But in a melody when the notes move In stepwise motion, you hear the two notes one after the other - they’re not considered dissonant. Make sense?

      There aren't any yet, at the time I wasn't sure how many would be interested. I might do the rest of them at some point. In the mean time - I recommend Counter in composition by Schachter and Salzer :)

      @@katandallthat it’s 1 of 6. I haven’t created them yet - it’s at least a month of hard work, and I wasn’t even sure how many would be interested. So this one’s the pilot - if there’s more interest I’ll create the rest :)
