Near the end of the video, I think I spotted a glass stopper amongst the glass. All that colored glass would be fun to use to create art too!! Oh the great fun!! Thanks again for bringing me along (virtually) 😊
Watching from sunny hot Australia. We really enjoy your channel!! Love how you fade in what the coin would look like and your knowledge of history is brilliant! Keep up the great work! 😊😊
My husband and I live on the same farm he grew up on. There is broken glass everywhere in the corral's soil. It often has the hints of being from plates, bowls, canning jars, pop bottles, etc. My thoughts are that because there was no garbage pick-up many years ago and because glass doesn't burn, the glass was purposely shattered and thrown in the soil as a way to get rid of it. Because we transfer soil from the corral to my garden, I find glass in the garden as well. I like it. It's history.
The fantastic view of the St. Andrew lead mold if it is two pieced, it has to be to produce a solid poured and cooled object I assume two parts were hinged? You pour in molten metal hinge it shut after cooled dump free? Not knowing this is all new to me and absolutely fascinating
Another great video John! I remember when you found that mould, what a find!! 👌🏻 I found my first jetton on sunday! Its very thin, brittle and a bit broke around the edge but they all count dont they!! I was so chuffed. See you on the next dig!😊
Hehe glad I'm not the only one who thinks its still 2024 😀What a fab first find! All that pottery and glass is exciting, spotted a glass stopper and no doubt there will be some codd marbles there somewhere. Look forward to seeing what else you spot/detect there!
John, have you ever found a coin with the double portrait of William and Mary? I really like the old milled silver coins. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
That’s one of the heftiest palm guards I’ve seen you dig up! I apologize if I’ve told you this one before, but every time you dig up a watch winder, I think about one of my favorite lines: “He was so confused, he didn’t know whether to scratch his watch, or wind his butt.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cheers, and ATB!
Interesting video John! Sounds like that heated jacket was a good investment! Can’t wait for you to dig the Victorian dump site! Will be very interesting to see what treasures are there!
You should probably pick up and take as much of the broken pottery/glass with you. Crafters love broken pottery to make mosaics/decorations. You could sell it or give it to someone - they would appreciate it. Too bad I live so far away or I'd hitch a ride with you and collect some for myself! Best of luck and hoping the weather warms up a bit to make digging easier.
I’ve found several palm guards. Ones with dot indentations are for leather work but also find some nearer the sea with linear notches, which I’m lead to believe were used for shucking oysters. 👍
Funny, you seemed so disappointed when you thought it was a tombac button. Here in the US, we're thrilled when we find one! Enjoyed your video as always!
Congrats on the silver! Sure wish we had really old coins like that here in the States. I upgraded from my Deus 1 to a Deus 2 yesterday, can't wait to get it out in the field!
Could the 2nd. Find, be a Small Palm guard for a Young Kid..!? Looked too small for an Adult.. But....??? Seemed to be Shaped that way on one side..! But its a Find. None the Less.! You must be Keen, with Frost on the Ground & that Cutting Wind..! I am Downunder in Sth.Aust. looking at a Noon Temp of 30°c & watching you all 'Rugged up' gave me the Shivers..! Great Video & Happy New year to you & yours..! 🎉 Cheers All ✌🦘👍
Another great day. John, when you detect sandy soil have you tried beach mode? Seemed to work for Hoover Boys. The colored glass would be beautiful tumbled.
Does the museum have a tin figure and see if it fits the mold? That would be amazingly if it is. I asked the question a few weeks ago has anyone ever found the stamp or die fir hammered coins? Ive never see or heard of a find like that
I would love to see your map of the fields, showing where you found what and how deep. I know you will not show it, but it has to be interesting to plot what was where.
Great video! I am sitting in Illinois, USA, with lots of snow on the ground. I am looking forward to seeing the video of your return to that dump site!!
John, Happy new year ! Could the lead with some shape to it have been a small palm guard? The dirt in the convex side would be in the hollow where the needle pressed in. Maybe for a woman with smaller hands?
When I enter "lawes sheep dips" in my search engine only items from Australia and New Zealand pop up. Some in the late 1800s all the way to 1950s or so.
Great finds for frozen fields! I would love to have a palm guard, my fingers are arthritic, so using a palm guard to push a needle through would be more helpful than using it to protect my palm. Thanks John.
Another great video! I am wondering if you might edit up a video of finds related to Robbie Burns places or era in time for Robbie Burns night. First hole silver is so much better than last January. Yay!
John, I think you should wait to do that pottery/glass section of the field until the Hoover boys crew comes back. Or at least wait for Sean to come back, he seems to be a good luck charm.
Born in Virginia not too far from where I lived in Williamsburg a very old university College of William and Mary to see them both you showed is good to see to know more
nice to see all the pottery and glass. What can it be there for? Seems like a dump in the past or they haul loads of landfill or dumps there dump it out? It may be loaded with coins. Come back there with a blow torch haha
I do the same for whatever reason. My shovel (spade) is always backwards when it initially hits the ground. Don't know if it's mere possibility or if the ergonomics dictate the way I hold it leading to this backward orientation whence time to dig.
That land looks like a typical ashes tip John. Pottery, glass, waste & human poo that was shovelled out of privies by men with a horse & cart. It makes very good soil. I used to dig for bottles as a young man.
Near the end of the video, I think I spotted a glass stopper amongst the glass. All that colored glass would be fun to use to create art too!! Oh the great fun!! Thanks again for bringing me along (virtually) 😊
spotted it too
You did! I saw it too.
after this vid i clicked on Nothern mudlarks latest vid and it was like a continuation but they spot the stopper and dig it out
Oh the great fun 😂😂😂
I spotted that too!
Awesome work yet again John.
Well done buddy 👏 👍.
From South Wales.
Watching from sunny hot Australia. We really enjoy your channel!! Love how you fade in what the coin would look like and your knowledge of history is brilliant! Keep up the great work! 😊😊
Totally agree! Well said 🙂🇦🇺

Makes sense to me!! I’m looking forward to going back here to see if there’s any metal work left behind!
So glad to be able to catch up with you. Although slow going, I'm pleased you got the silver.! Bless up bro 👊
The fantastic view of the St. Andrew lead mold if it is two pieced, it has to be to produce a solid poured and cooled object I assume two parts were hinged? You pour in molten

John, your dedication to metal detecting is inspiring. Thank you for braving the cold for us.
Thanks for going out in that freezing weather while we sit on the cozy couch watching your great videos.
I love the history lessons with the coins.
Been ages since you had a palm guard that size 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️
thanks for showing again like before the lead palm guard for leather working it is new to me to find out
My fav dectorists! (Other than me!) great job John!
Another great video John! I remember when you found that mould, what a find!! 👌🏻 I found my first jetton on sunday! Its very thin, brittle and a bit broke around the edge but they all count dont they!! I was so chuffed. See you on the next dig!😊
Found a William the 3rd love token was really pleased with it nice video 👍
Hehe glad I'm not the only one who thinks its still 2024 😀What a fab first find! All that pottery and glass is exciting, spotted a glass stopper and no doubt there will be some codd marbles there somewhere. Look forward to seeing what else you spot/detect there!
Your videos are some of the best on metal detecting. Thanks.
I had forgot about the mold! I bet Albert could find the other half 😂 That silver button coin 😂 what a surprise!! Stay toasty and see you on the next!
Check at 27:37...maybe a glass stopper to the high left of what was picked up (as someone else mentioned)? And...another 💙
John, have you ever found a coin with the double portrait of William and Mary? I really like the old milled silver coins. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

You forgot to kiss that silver coin! Fabulous find! Congrats!
Interesting video John! Sounds like that heated jacket was a good investment! Can’t wait for you to dig the Victorian dump site! Will be very interesting to see what treasures are there!
Wow. 2025 starting with a bang. Great hunt John.
Palm guards were also popular during the Victorian era for mending sacks broken during fieldwork. Where there are bag seals, you'll find palm guards.
You should probably pick up and take as much of the broken pottery/glass with you. Crafters love broken pottery to make mosaics/decorations. You could sell it or give it to someone - they would appreciate it. Too bad I live so far away or I'd hitch a ride with you and collect some for myself!

On it john 😀👍🏴🏴🏴
Enjoy the video
That was an amazing amount of glass and pottery.
Thank you for the video John, Maybe if you color the front of the shovel handle a difference color it might help you keep it in the right direction.
I always enjoy your history of the coin 😊
27:29 looks like a relic next to the root.
Funny, you seemed so disappointed when you thought it was a tombac button. Here in the US, we're thrilled when we find one! Enjoyed your video as always!
Nice finds for a cold day in Scotland. Good job John and thank you for sharing.
Another great day mate. Digging in the frozen ground. Well done.
Congrats on the silver! Sure wish we had really old coins like that here in the States. I upgraded from my Deus 1 to a Deus 2 yesterday, can't wait to get it out in the field!
That is awesome! Happy hunting and let me know how you get on with the DEUS 2 Scott
Could the 2nd. Find, be a Small Palm guard for a Young Kid..!?

Cheers All ✌🦘👍
Great day for you! As far as "field utensils" go, spoons seem to be the most popular find. I just find that odd!
Another great day.
John, when you detect sandy soil have you tried beach mode? Seemed to work for Hoover Boys.
The colored glass would be beautiful tumbled.
Great finds, good sign all that pottery for the next time on that field.
Thanks 👍 yes, hopefully it’s a sign of lots of lost coins!!
Great finds John...years started off cherry for you my friend 🍻
I'm so glad you got the silver William III. That would have made a good day on it's own. Cheers from Texas.
Very enjoyable video. Thanks John.
Love all the history lessons, with all items
Boom let's go let's got treausre and adventure ✌👵
Does the museum have a tin figure and see if it fits the mold? That would be amazingly if it is.
I asked the question a few weeks ago has anyone ever found the stamp or die fir hammered coins? Ive never see or heard of a find like that
i feel your pain John trying to dig the solid ground , but you had a good day thanks again cheers
I would love to see your map of the fields, showing where you found what and how deep. I know you will not show it, but it has to be interesting to plot what was where.
Great video! I am sitting in Illinois, USA, with lots of snow on the ground.
I am looking forward to seeing the video of your return to that dump site!!
The high winds off the river makes the brisk winds damp and that's tough to handle
Farmers loved those dry middens, The ash from the fire was great from crops. All sorts of stuff mixed in to it.
Another great video.❤️❤️❤️❤️
A good day for sure! A bit chilly though. Exciting little spot you found, either the pottery and such.
Nice Hunt John, thanks Always, Indiana.
Great video. That small shaped piece of lead looks to me like a small palm guard, possibly for a child??
First hole silver, can't beat that! Way to go John.
Amen! What a start!! Best wishes
Great finds for frozen fields! I would love to have a palm guard, my fingers are arthritic, so using a palm guard to push a needle through would be more helpful than using it to protect my palm. Thanks John.
Great time today, thank you.
Another great video!
I am wondering if you might edit up a video of finds related to Robbie Burns places or era in time for Robbie Burns night.
First hole silver is so much better than last January. Yay!
Love it , so funny, enjoying the clumpy mud reveals 😅❤
Glad you persevered! Nice hunt.
A suggestion for alternative videos: if you have had mystery items identified - show when you found them and then give details of objects.
Cheers John
Enjoy the video and happy Sundays!
Looks like the old creepy crawler molds we used when we were kids
You didn't pick up the stopper
it is near 27:41 just when you say" teaming"
John, I think you should wait to do that pottery/glass section of the field until the Hoover boys crew comes back. Or at least wait for Sean to come back, he seems to be a good luck charm.
the second find of lead. looks like it might have been a palm gaurd for a child. .they did make them work at a young age then.
That’s very true! Good suggestion Roy, thanks
Born in Virginia not too far from where I lived in Williamsburg a very old university College of William and Mary to see them both you showed is good to see to know more
Happy 2025! I thought you were finished by the 30-second curse. Especially when you found the hammered silver straight off. Nice finds for sure.
I had noticed you turning the spade around.
Let's go John
Thanks Daniel. Enjoy the video
When you get your spade backwards, that's when we do a shot.
love the vids but...4th dig of 2024? 😂 i think its 2025 John, keep the vids coming, always a pleasure, good luck.
👍👍
nice to see all the pottery and glass. What can it be there for? Seems like a dump in the past or they haul loads of landfill or dumps there dump it out? It may be loaded with coins. Come back there with a blow torch haha
💙💙💙
Congrats mate! I tried to email you but it failed to go through. Amazing finds!
Oh if you found the other half! 😃
ACE!
I do the same for whatever reason. My shovel (spade) is always backwards when it initially hits the ground. Don't know if it's mere possibility or if the ergonomics dictate the way I hold it leading to this backward orientation whence time to dig.
I would think there would be more coins at the ends of the fields.
The plow pulls them to the end and then turns dropping them off.
That land looks like a typical ashes tip John. Pottery, glass, waste & human poo that was shovelled out of privies by men with a horse & cart. It makes very good soil. I used to dig for bottles as a young man.
are you still using the jefro program
William of Orange is a distant ancestor.
Anything's possible!
🍻
Was that piece of lead a childs handguard?
Hey John, if the rest of 2025 is like the start, it looks like it’s gonna be a good year for you!
Since it's 2025, I hope this isn't a repeat. 😂😂😂😊
It’s 2025?!? 🤪
Someone was turning that first coin into a love token perhaps??
I THINK THE SMALL PIECE OF LED COULD ALSO BE A PALM GUARD FOR A CHILD OR TEENAGER LOOKS VERY SIMILAR.
Looks like someone manured the field with the household compost heap. Definitely wash your hands!
Could it be someone was making a love token and lost it, looks like both sides had some wear
hi john im late again
I forgive you Alan! Enjoy ☺️
@@thescottishdetectorist thanks john nice first cion tho
2025 John 😂😂
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🫶🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿
Many thanks 🤩
I would think the lead would melt if you put hot metal in it.
Don't you just love being wrong about what is in the hole? Great first find!
Its 2024 and you can actually see the letters 111 🤔
Someones had a good night on the Ale 😂
