  • This fig tree is a rooted cutting from my I-258 fig tree. I-258 produces large, syrupy figs, and I-258 fig trees are extremely vigorous. #figtree #figtrees #figcuttings #propagation #figs

    I just planted two new fig trees a couple of weeks ago. I actually tried fresh figs for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I went right to buying two new trees.

    I just received some cuttings. Wish you had a fig cutting give away. I love different varieties of figs. I use perlite and vermiculite. I took the cuttings put rooting hormone powder and cut drainage holes in the cup. Then placed a second cup to hold the water n drink as they want. I have a deep clear tote and it sits closed to give lots of humidity to the figs. It is in my screen room and sun twice a day. Sun is strong in SC. Within 1 week I got almost all to grow leaves. One is growing a fig? Should I cut it off? Not growing from top- side of cutting. Then I have old yeller and they don’t seem to be growing. I am leaving them to see if they root with no leaves. Is there anything I should be doing? Your advice is amazing

    Contrary to popular belief cool temperatures are preferable to grow roots from a cutting than warmer

    I brought in a sweet potato plant for the winter to see if i could save it. I thought it died. I made sure it had some sun. Now its growing leaves like crazy. I wont have to buy another one. Same thung with my peacan trees that the squirrels planted in my front yard. I have 5 seedlings now!!!

    Was it moist the whole time or did the top dry out some? Surprised it didn't rot like some of your previous cuttings

    So do you need sun for then to root? I’ve seen people use the fig pop method.

    Question- I live in Ontario Canada and I want to plant my warm season veggies early instead of mid May (2 weeks after frost). I was thinking I’ll put in some floating row covers made of perforated polyethylene. Given that temperatures in April are 12degrees to 5 degrees Celsius, do you think I could start planting in April with this system in place ? Veggies in question are tomatoes melons eggplant etc. ps our April’s are sunny

      Fig Newtons don't taste anything at all like figs. They're truly nothing alike. I wouldn't be surprised if "figs" were the 7th or 8th ingredient on the list in those weird things.

      Yes, it is a clone of one of my trees. Yes, fig trees are either male or female. Only female figs are edible. Male fig trees are simply fig wasp hives that produce pollen.

    was the temperature so low that it took 100 days to become only like that?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Рік тому

      My sunroom is unheated, and it has EZBreeze windows, which are vinyl, so it only holds warmth when the sun is beating in it. It won't freeze in there, but it usually spends the 12 hours of darkness sitting at 40-45 degrees. In the day, it usually warms up to 60-80 degrees, depending on how sunny it is, so the average temp is somewhere in the 50's. Still, it rooted. It just took a long time, and the cool temps obviously preserved the unwrapped cutting.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  10 місяців тому

      But then you won't have any figs in the summer. If you root your cuttings in the fall, the trees will be ready for transplant in March. That's the key to getting same-year figs.
