      I really enjoy this channel. I'm a little upstate from you, but I like how you push your parameters zone wise. I planted a fig this year, and want to take some cuttings from it, to propagate more plants. I have space indoors for growth cuttings, as well as a greenhouse (Tunnel kind)
      It wont hurt my fig to do it now, will it?
      Also saw your video on bananas and loved it. Was seriously bummed to learn moro wont produce bananas. So I hope to get a couple of dwarf Cavendish banana in the spring. Although I've been told by one lady that they wont produce bananas for me, either? Can you recommend some dwarfs that might? Do you know any good sources for buying banana plants?

Nothing was showing signs of ripening. I followed your instructions and now have several big figs ripening already! This works!

    Fig sap is an excellent substitute for rennet in cheesemaking. In fact I found it coagulâtes the milk more efficiently than rennet. Only takes a big drop per gallon of milk- I mixed the drop in a couple tablespoons of water before adding to milk.

      Most farmers use all their milk a couple weeks before it would go bad to make farmers cheese and they just use lemons for that , no rennet! Cheeses made with lemon dont taste like lemon at all they taste like tillamook cheddar, cheese made with rennet often times smells like the inside of an animals rectum xD litterily cause that's what rennet comes from lol

      Also If you do use fig sap in cheese make sure not to give it to anyone without making sure they dont have a latex allergy cause people with latex allergy will die if they just touch latex let alone if they eat it, eating latex would be certain death for anyone with latex allergy and figs are the #1 producer of latex on earth, the rubber fig is a tropical fig that produces the most latex of any plant on earth and all other fig species are all leading producers of latex as well! Anyone with latex allergy also shouldnt grow figs cause getting that sap on you would be the end of you if you got a latex allergy!

    Last year I made green fig jelly out of the extra green figs. Just boil the figs to remove the sap then cook and smash with sugar and lemon juice. Very yummy.

      The green figs have no sugar content. They don't develop any sugars until a few days before they're ripe. Even picking them 2-3 days early, the sugar content is very low. These figs I'm picking off are 45-60 days away from ripening, so I can't imagine them being edible.

      We make mistakes every season. It's no biggie. The figs will continue to ripen in the sunroom as long as it gets "warm enough." In my experience, fig trees need 75+ degree temps to ripen their figs well. When it gets cooler than that, they take very, very long and don't get as sweet for me.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Рік тому +5

      No, figs do not need to be peeled. If you have figs oozing sap when you pick them, that means they're very underripe. A fig should be soft like a bag of jelly when you pick them. Almost "squishy." It's common for new fig growers to pick figs too soon. Chances are, it needed another 3-5 days.

    I have a fig tree, planted this year, that is supposed to be hardy. I was told to cut it back to knee high and cover in leaves or something to protect it. Im considering bringing it inside. It has a ton of fruit and is making more. We have had 2 light frosts. First freeze expected tomorrow at 23 degrees! Below normal temp for a freeze in Oct here.
    Not sure what to do with it. I think we are going to have a much colder winter this year.

    Would you pinch/remove the top growth if the tree also produced a breba crop?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Рік тому +3

      You're welcome! I don't grow for breba (they don't hold here in the South). All you need for breba figs is to maintain some of this year's wood into next spring. They form on the previous year's wood come springtime. As you can see, these fig trees are 10 feet tall at this point, so there is an enormous amount of breba-producing wood. If you want breba figs, you'll need to prune to preserve some amount of wood for breba production.

    If no one mentioned it yet, could you try spritzing the open wounds of the fig tree with cool water? Succulent gardeners do this often with Euphorbia and other varieties with sap, and forces the wound to coagulate immediately! Would love to know if it works for figs too.

    Hi NOrth Carolina. Lived there 10 years. Loved Wilmington. I was motivated to grow figs here in Kentucky from your channel. I’ve got five thriving bush-like plants growing in ground in my mini orchard. I was wondering how you combat squirrels? Last year I had a good harvest but this year they found my figs and I rarely get a ripe one. They seem to know when the figs are ready to eat and eat about half of the fig leaving the rest to rot. Thanks for any suggestion

      Squirrels are pretty rare here around Wilmington, for whatever reason. My perimeter fence keeps most of the mammals out, so I haven't had to deal with squirrels. What I would recommend you try is insect netting or bird netting to cover the trees. They are breathable and shouldn't harm the ripening process, and it may be annoying enough to keep them off. It's worth a shot, and you can get a lot of netting for $25, so it's worth a shot. I have some items linked in my Amazon Storefront in the video description if you want to look through it, but Amazon has countless options and sizes.

    I grew cuttings this year friends gave me. I got my first frost 10/30/23. I took in my potted cuttings where my home inside is 72-74 degrees. I put on pot with same type of fig near a sunny window for more warmth. I am not sure if it will go into ripping the fruit on it? I am going to pinch it as you said because it is only 1 stock with over 20 mission figs on it. What else should I do? Should I take every fig and leaf off and put it into colder outside during daytime or in garage wrapped with burlap. First time in SC growing figs and fig cuttings!

    You advise pinching the growth point, but this will cause an active awakening of all growth points below it. The growth points with shoots and figs will wake up. How will this affect the future first harvest of breba?

      No. Any unripened figs need removing before winter. They will die anyway. Breba crops will come from the tiny buds or slightly bigger.

      That isn't my backyard. That is the retention pond in the subdivision that all the storm drains drain to. The "swamp" in my backyard is a tiny creek about 500 feet behind my property. If you were to scale and fence and keep walking, it gets mucky, but it isn't a standing body of water. It's basically floodplain, and my property is on a hill above the floodplain.

    I have a fig tree that I planted 4 years now and it’s never ripe for me. I think the weather in Seattle Washington is too short for the kind fig that I have. I did remove all leaves and new growth but not the little fruits. Then I water the tree and suddenly all the fruit start falling down. That’s why I can not taste any fruit from my fig tree. I don’t know the name of the fig that I have. All I know is the fruit has strips evenly along the fruit and the color of the fruit is so bright green color like the thumbnail of this video. If you know what kind and the name please let me know. Thanks so much

      I grow them espalier, so the cordons are at roughly 16 inches and 32 inches. I cut them back annually to the cordons. During the growing season, they'll get to be 8 feet tall, and they're cut back. I have a playlist on how I train and prune them here: ua-cam.com/play/PL1gY7BoYBGIFlbg2ri_7gCJPhXaZ_nOvy.html

      I would, yes. You're moving into your dry season soon, so getting them to ripen within the next few weeks will be ideal since the weather will be getting dry, but still plenty warm. October is the ideal time for figs to ripen in Florida, I think, since it gets dry but still has very warm temps.

    Is there anything to be done to help prevent pickle worms? After they took over my cucumbers they invaded my squashes. If we can't prevent let's control. Help! I don't want this next year.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Рік тому

      The only way I know to prevent worms is to cover your plants with insect netting, whether you either build a hoop house/row covers around them or just toss netting on top of them. Physical barriers are the only way to actually stop them. If you can't cover them, the best thing to do is a 7-day spraying routine with spinosad or BT. That won't prevent 100% of them, but it will control the population.
