I really enjoy this channel. I'm a little upstate from you, but I like how you push your parameters zone wise. I planted a fig this year, and want to take some cuttings from it, to propagate more plants. I have space indoors for growth cuttings, as well as a greenhouse (Tunnel kind) It wont hurt my fig to do it now, will it? Also saw your video on bananas and loved it. Was seriously bummed to learn moro wont produce bananas. So I hope to get a couple of dwarf Cavendish banana in the spring. Although I've been told by one lady that they wont produce bananas for me, either? Can you recommend some dwarfs that might? Do you know any good sources for buying banana plants?
Good video my season is basically over in Canada it’s getting cold so I brought my fig tree indoors for the couple figs to ripen before I store them for winter
I took your advice and followed your instruction to a tee. I am eating figs already, one week later. I am in zone 4b in Canada. My fig tree is in a pot and in the greenhouse. Nothing was showing signs of ripening. I followed your instructions and now have several big figs ripening already! This works! Thank you for good information.
Fig sap is an excellent substitute for rennet in cheesemaking. In fact I found it coagulâtes the milk more efficiently than rennet. Only takes a big drop per gallon of milk- I mixed the drop in a couple tablespoons of water before adding to milk.
Most farmers use all their milk a couple weeks before it would go bad to make farmers cheese and they just use lemons for that , no rennet! Cheeses made with lemon dont taste like lemon at all they taste like tillamook cheddar, cheese made with rennet often times smells like the inside of an animals rectum xD litterily cause that's what rennet comes from lol
Also If you do use fig sap in cheese make sure not to give it to anyone without making sure they dont have a latex allergy cause people with latex allergy will die if they just touch latex let alone if they eat it, eating latex would be certain death for anyone with latex allergy and figs are the #1 producer of latex on earth, the rubber fig is a tropical fig that produces the most latex of any plant on earth and all other fig species are all leading producers of latex as well! Anyone with latex allergy also shouldnt grow figs cause getting that sap on you would be the end of you if you got a latex allergy!
Last year I made green fig jelly out of the extra green figs. Just boil the figs to remove the sap then cook and smash with sugar and lemon juice. Very yummy.
The green figs have no sugar content. They don't develop any sugars until a few days before they're ripe. Even picking them 2-3 days early, the sugar content is very low. These figs I'm picking off are 45-60 days away from ripening, so I can't imagine them being edible.
I thought I was done for the season, but a look at my hardy chicago tree last week proved very surprising. About half of my dozen hard green figs are now a bit larger, getting fairly dark. One is starting to droop. Go tree, gooooo! 😁
You can't be wrong with hardy Chicago,by the begining of fall will ripen.I have one plant and propegated three more ,.It's a sure winner for zone 6 and 5..Wish the fruit would be a little bigger.
@@nicolavolpe9565 Yeah... they're damn tasty too. Around here they hang on the tree very well. Win-win. After the four we picked and ate last week, my wife wants more fig trees 🤣
I have been doing that to my fig trees that I have growing in containers,my growing season is not long enough here in zone 6B but they still produce beautiful tasty figs
I also remove growth tips at end of June. That gives 90 days for figs to ripen here in southeast PA. After seeing this video I realize the importance of doing it again plus removing small fruit. Great presentation! Thx.
Well the only crop I have is Chicago Cold Hearty... still got a month till Estimated Harvest for my zone. green figs look plumped and ready to swell though, no little buds left they all got to 3/4 of an inch. :D Tips for faster ripening though... sounds good to me!
Thank you for this presentation. I'm in the TX Hill Country and I'm going out after I finish this comment and do exactly what you are recommending. I have a Golden Riverside and it's my first year getting fruit.
This was my first season and mistakes were made! I only have a few weeks left before frost but since mine are all in containers, I’m going to bring them in my sun room in the hope to extend the season enough to ripen the fruit I have set. Fingers crossed!
We make mistakes every season. It's no biggie. The figs will continue to ripen in the sunroom as long as it gets "warm enough." In my experience, fig trees need 75+ degree temps to ripen their figs well. When it gets cooler than that, they take very, very long and don't get as sweet for me.
My fig tree had lots of figs over the summer but finished all by early August. It is now about 8-10 feet tall and almost as wide with many branches. Should I prune it back and if so, when? I don't want to stop it from fruiting next year. I had figs on old wood and new wood. I don't know the variety as I took cutting from another tree about 9 years ago and put inground 6 years ago. I live in Myrtle Beach zone 8b.
Very timely video, thanks. I live in California and have about 9weeks to first frost. I just went out and removed all the little figs and growing tips. I went a little berserk and removed all the new emerging growth. Let's see if it works for me! Might post a video update if it does. Thanks for the tips!
I'm ripening my last figs in my basement with grow lights and little greenhouse just bought a fan heater today to try to achieve the ripening in the greenhouse!
Oh you mentioned in the comments about keeping the roots cool. I tried something, I painted some of my 15 gallon black pots white and I can definitely tell the difference I put them to the test I put a black pot next to a white pot in full sun about a 100 degrees out side and the white pot was significantly cool than the black one and I can barely touch the black one but the white one no problem. I’m not painting my 1 gallon pots because they are temporary until I up pot them into the white ones
My fig tree is on its last fig ripening of the season and I’m very happy for getting 8 figs this year for a young tree first time for me that actually ripened compare from last year that none ripened and my tree just died for no reason wasn’t even cold
I have a tree that has 4 branches that didn't fruit at all. Should I seperate the branches? Tie them together?, hoping it will bind together, and certainty, how to get the fig to grow on the tree. Ty
Funny I stumbled onto this video. It's 9-5-24 and this morning I pinched off all the growth points on my largest fig tree. May not pinch figs themselves as the there aren't THAT many on this tree. Ha! And I quickly learned to start low and work upwards as the pinched points truly leak a ton of white sap. Live and learn.
This is a great video. As usual, you put out great work and it's very helpful watching your videos. My cucumbers, eggplants, fig tree, blueberry tree, lettuce, beets, and tomatoes have been much more productive and more fun to grow this year because of you! Thank you
This year I experimented using the gel of Aloe Vera to stop the sap running. It worked. Later I noted these areas looked black but new growth was coming as expected.
A gel may prevent the sap from flowing out, but it doesn't really hurt to let the sap flow. The sap will "clot" just like your finger with a paper cut. It stops pretty quickly, so I don't bother.
This was the most helpful fig knowledge I have ever seen or read! Thank you very much!!! I finally have a decent fig set and have been wondering what to do about the small ones. They are sooo delicious when fully ripe!
I have a tree in my parents backyard, the yard I being overgrown with invasive bamboo. Do you have a video/suggestion for how to transplant/take part of the tree?
Excellent lesson! Thank you so much. I have one measly fig left on my Strawberry fig tree My figs ripened in July because it was so hot; even protected, they went to town. I need to report my Strawberry fig in the same pot when it gets cold enough. I'm a bit nervous doing so, even though I watched your video. Guess I'll watch again so I don't make dreadful mistakes!
Thank you so much for this info! First year growing figs in zone 6b and got a Chicago hardy that put out a bunch of figs in its 1st yr, but kinda late in the season and I had no expectation that they’d ripen. I’m going outside right now to do this.
Excelente!! Good to know thanks. I hope next year to use this information. I have 2 fig rooted branches. They are in 5 gallon pots. I don't know what variety they are. But they are growing and next year I hope to get my first figs. Thanks
What I did I cut about 25 cuttings off of a wild fig tree on may 5th and some of those now have figs on them so I removed the smallest figs and left the bigger ones on and pinched off the growth tips like I said these are only this years cuttings so I’m not expecting to much but next season I’m excited about these cuttings and I waited until the main crop of figs ripened on that tree and they look similar to a LSU Gold some told me Kadota but these have a ton of seeds in them but still good to eat they probably would have been better if that tree would have had water throughout the summer but not one drop of water to that tree all summer long greenish yellowish skin and a amber light pinkish inside
Question: When you pinch off the growth tips, how does it affect the next year's growth. Does it make your tree very bushy and odd shaped? I'm new at this and learning. Thanks for the video!
You mentioned about wearing gloves when pruning figs because of the white sap that seeps out from the stems. I'm new to fig growing and I was wondering if they should be peeled, since there also was sap oozing from the skin of the ones I picked this morning, my first crop! Thanks for all your information.
No, figs do not need to be peeled. If you have figs oozing sap when you pick them, that means they're very underripe. A fig should be soft like a bag of jelly when you pick them. Almost "squishy." It's common for new fig growers to pick figs too soon. Chances are, it needed another 3-5 days.
I have unground fig plants. They grow more like bushes than your branched plants. I have lots of fruits but very few ripened figs this year and last few years. Thanks for sharing this video. Could you please show how to do pruning in fall before they go dormant? My potted plants actually gave me some fruits but they have lots of skinny branches. I am not sure if I need to prune them before winter. Could you please comment on the potted plants too? Many thanks.
@@TheMillennialGardener Could removing leaves to expose the fig fruit to the sunlight ripen the fruit quicker? There was a youtube video by someone giving that as a tip due to the leaves blocking the sunlight on the fig fruit. I noticed on your fig trees that is espalier there's less leaves compared to fig fruit?
Im in europe where the somers are hot easy over 40°c and winter - 10 or 15. We have some figs here that are growing outside in they own and have raipen fruits all the sommer and fall. The people hier like old varietys, they are much more hardy for the elements to
If no one mentioned it yet, could you try spritzing the open wounds of the fig tree with cool water? Succulent gardeners do this often with Euphorbia and other varieties with sap, and forces the wound to coagulate immediately! Would love to know if it works for figs too.
Cold water? I’d use an ice cube. It would make better sense to, which pairs with your statement. I use ivory soap bar to deter any invasive insects from entering the cut part.
I have a fig tree, planted this year, that is supposed to be hardy. I was told to cut it back to knee high and cover in leaves or something to protect it. Im considering bringing it inside. It has a ton of fruit and is making more. We have had 2 light frosts. First freeze expected tomorrow at 23 degrees! Below normal temp for a freeze in Oct here. Not sure what to do with it. I think we are going to have a much colder winter this year.
Question: are there late or early ripening varieties? I have a big old wonderful black Mission fig that produces hundreds of figs every year but always in late August-September. I would be interested in growing other varieties so I can get fruit either before or after that period. I'm in temperate southern California. Great subject for another video.
Hi NOrth Carolina. Lived there 10 years. Loved Wilmington. I was motivated to grow figs here in Kentucky from your channel. I’ve got five thriving bush-like plants growing in ground in my mini orchard. I was wondering how you combat squirrels? Last year I had a good harvest but this year they found my figs and I rarely get a ripe one. They seem to know when the figs are ready to eat and eat about half of the fig leaving the rest to rot. Thanks for any suggestion
Squirrels are pretty rare here around Wilmington, for whatever reason. My perimeter fence keeps most of the mammals out, so I haven't had to deal with squirrels. What I would recommend you try is insect netting or bird netting to cover the trees. They are breathable and shouldn't harm the ripening process, and it may be annoying enough to keep them off. It's worth a shot, and you can get a lot of netting for $25, so it's worth a shot. I have some items linked in my Amazon Storefront in the video description if you want to look through it, but Amazon has countless options and sizes.
I grew cuttings this year friends gave me. I got my first frost 10/30/23. I took in my potted cuttings where my home inside is 72-74 degrees. I put on pot with same type of fig near a sunny window for more warmth. I am not sure if it will go into ripping the fruit on it? I am going to pinch it as you said because it is only 1 stock with over 20 mission figs on it. What else should I do? Should I take every fig and leaf off and put it into colder outside during daytime or in garage wrapped with burlap. First time in SC growing figs and fig cuttings!
I would like to try a fig tree in a 5 gallon container. Can you recommend a plant that is easy to grow and produces a lot of fruits? Thanks 😊. Zone 7 Hot Springs Village, Arkansas
You're welcome! I don't grow for breba (they don't hold here in the South). All you need for breba figs is to maintain some of this year's wood into next spring. They form on the previous year's wood come springtime. As you can see, these fig trees are 10 feet tall at this point, so there is an enormous amount of breba-producing wood. If you want breba figs, you'll need to prune to preserve some amount of wood for breba production.
I want to try to grow some lemons. I just purchased some small lemon plant cuttings. Is it best to plant them in a pot or in the ground in Zone Area 6a,6B,7A (Stony Point N.Y)?
I have a Celeste, LSU Purple, and Brown Turkey. Only the Brown Turkey is giving fruit. I used the link for the bags and they are great. But the squirrels and rats have figured them out. They are just ripping the bags off and chewing into them. With that, I only get about 3 figs a week. I do have dozens of unripe ones. Will try this. Thanks!
Love your informative channel, huge help. New to figs this year, just checked my newly formed figlets and noticed many of the fruits have tiny droplets of sap on them, is this normal or a problem? Thank you
When should I prune figs in Long Island, NY? I received a “White Fig” from a Neighbor when he was cutting down a huge bush and he doesn’t know the variety…Any suggestions?
Very clever. But I'm guessing you wouldn't prune the new vegetative growth if you're aiming for the breba crop only, like on a desert king variety in a coldish climate/short growing season
@@TheMillennialGardener Thank you soo very much.. I am so glad I found you..always look forward for your next episode video. I also bought the banana tree you recommended..planted near my fish pond..they are doing great.. I also bought a fig tree, got one fig!! I am so excited.. I recommended your channel to a lot of my friends.. Thank you!!!
Is there anything to be done to help prevent pickle worms? After they took over my cucumbers they invaded my squashes. If we can't prevent let's control. Help! I don't want this next year.
The only way I know to prevent worms is to cover your plants with insect netting, whether you either build a hoop house/row covers around them or just toss netting on top of them. Physical barriers are the only way to actually stop them. If you can't cover them, the best thing to do is a 7-day spraying routine with spinosad or BT. That won't prevent 100% of them, but it will control the population.
Those Tiger Figs are my favorite. I wish I could grow them like you. I have a small plant here in zone 10a in So. CA. What do you suggest as fertilizer?
Will gluing thin reflective aluminum wrapping sheet onto your wooden fence and laying down on the ground below with white plastic sheet provide extra sunlight onto leaves of your fig trees?.🤔🤔🤔
You advise pinching the growth point, but this will cause an active awakening of all growth points below it. The growth points with shoots and figs will wake up. How will this affect the future first harvest of breba?
Fantastic tip. Thank you! Does one need to do this in the subtropical climate when it does not get down to 3 degree celcius in mid winter? Although my fig trees go dormant and shed their leaves, I think I have a longer growing period...
Hello darling…….QUESTION: how high do you let your in grown fig tree grow? I planted a Chicago Hardy a couple years ago….no fruit yet….it was run over by a mower 😩 but came back this year….hoping next year to have some figs….and do you have a video on pruning? I’m in zone 7A I think …NC…..tks 👵🏻
I grow them espalier, so the cordons are at roughly 16 inches and 32 inches. I cut them back annually to the cordons. During the growing season, they'll get to be 8 feet tall, and they're cut back. I have a playlist on how I train and prune them here: ua-cam.com/play/PL1gY7BoYBGIFlbg2ri_7gCJPhXaZ_nOvy.html

Glad to hear it! I'm glad it could be helpful!
The people hier like old varietys, they are much more hardy for the elements to
What kind of fertilizer you use for bigger fruit of the Fig tree.
Would the same pruning be necessary in a Mediterranean climate?
Very informative thankyou
You’re welcome!
Very helpful video, thanks
You're welcome!
I have to say you are so chock full of good Information! Keep it coming. They say dogs eat grass when they have upset stomachs.
There is a certain grass here that the dogs just love. It is a weed. I don’t know what it is called. Dale always eats it when he finds it.
My dog has a grass that he likes and searches for. It is an annual weed grass called nutsedge. Maybe what Dale likes
My tree is still in a pot and the figs are small. Should I move the tree into my Wintergarden so they can grow and ripen?
Question: are there late or early ripening varieties? I have a big old wonderful black Mission fig that produces hundreds of figs every year but always in late August-September. I would be interested in growing other varieties so I can get fruit either before or after that period. I'm in temperate southern California. Great subject for another video.
I like your videos you go in detail explaining to helping new gardener be better garden ❤than you!
Thank you
Hi NOrth Carolina.
Cat or dog
@@christinemccoy4471 definitely squirrels. I watched them jump up into the bush and move around looking for the ripe figs
Great information. ❤ Dale.
Thank you! Dale says hello!
Chicago Hardy
Have you tried plant juice or bloom juice. It's all organic
Great video. Many thanks.
Would you pinch/remove the top growth if the tree also produced a breba crop?
You're welcome! I don't grow for breba (they don't hold here in the South). All you need for breba figs is to maintain some of this year's wood into next spring. They form on the previous year's wood come springtime. As you can see, these fig trees are 10 feet tall at this point, so there is an enormous amount of breba-producing wood. If you want breba figs, you'll need to prune to preserve some amount of wood for breba production.
@@TheMillennialGardener That's great. Many thanks for your advice.
Always enjoy your videos.
I want to try to grow some lemons. I just purchased some small lemon plant cuttings. Is it best to plant them in a pot or in the ground in Zone Area 6a,6B,7A (Stony Point N.Y)?
How did your get figs on the main branch all along ????
I have a Celeste, LSU Purple, and Brown Turkey. Only the Brown Turkey is giving fruit. I used the link for the bags and they are great. But the squirrels and rats have figured them out. They are just ripping the bags off and chewing into them. With that, I only get about 3 figs a week. I do have dozens of unripe ones. Will try this. Thanks!
great tips!! thanks!!
I learn so many things from here!! Your videos are invaluable to me. Thank you bro
I'm so happy to hear that! You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video thanks for the information 👍

Love your informative channel, huge help. New to figs this year, just checked my newly formed figlets and noticed many of the fruits have tiny droplets of sap on them, is this normal or a problem? Thank you
When should I prune figs in Long Island, NY? I received a “White Fig” from a Neighbor when he was cutting down a huge bush and he doesn’t know the variety…Any suggestions?
Very clever. But I'm guessing you wouldn't prune the new vegetative growth if you're aiming for the breba crop only, like on a desert king variety in a coldish climate/short growing season
Is it a good idea to remove all the leaves when the fruit is close to maturity or even before? How much energy do the leaves take from the tree?
Great video. Any suggestions on how to stop birds from eating my figs!!! Thanks
question: i have a 3 month old air layered fig...it has 3 main branches and is about 3 feet...it produced fruits...what do i do?
I bought some blueberries and raspberries ..Should I plant them.now or wait till the spring?Thanks..
You can plant berries in the fall. Now is the perfect time to plant your cold tolerant berry bushes.
Hi ,I live in zone 7,do I have to prune the fig tree in fall, thank you, please help me.
That won't prevent 100% of them, but it will control the population.
well done thank you Bello
You’re welcome!
Those Tiger Figs are my favorite. I wish I could grow them like you. I have a small plant here in zone 10a in So. CA. What do you suggest as fertilizer?
Best fig growing video I have seen to date, thank you! It also helps that you are right here in Eastern NC. Subscribed.
Hi i have question what fertilizer start now october thank ypu

Will gluing thin reflective aluminum wrapping sheet onto your wooden fence and laying down on the ground below with white plastic sheet provide extra sunlight onto leaves of your fig trees?.🤔🤔🤔
Fantastic advice thanks
You're welcome!
Question if I cut growing tips will that prevent that tip from growing longer next year ?
That tip will not grow but it will start growing from the next node down the following year. That is where you will get new growth.
Thank You!👍
