I fully agree but in my opinion Leicester City winning the Premier League title back in 2015/2016 comes very close. Also when Greeks won UEFA Euro 2004 in football is an amazing achievement. And yes, football/soccer is my #1 sport 😂 As a Finn, our ice hockey world championship in 2019 is an absolute fairy tale. I was in grade school. It was maybe one of the two times I ever got to stay up late. Our country needed that miracle as much as we need one now but sadly many Olympic 'athletes' are only focused on self-promotion and Marxist activism. How far we have fallen that in a little over 40 years the US and Russia have virtually switched roles politically and the Cold War has been resurrected.
The USA team was made up of college kids, average age 21 or so. They beat a Russian team that had won 4 straight Gold medals, regularly beat NHL teams and once beat a squad of NHL All-Stars 6-0. In terms of talent they weren't even in the same universe. On top of all that the Russians beat this USA team 10-3 in an exhibition just two weeks prior to the game. Can never be duplicated; greatest moment in sports history.
I saw this game on TV and will never forget what happened. Just unbelievable. The Soviet Team a few months before had easily beaten the NHL all stars something like 5-0 !! This country was in dire need of something like this miracle back then.
I mean no disrespect to you. But actually the two teams met in an exhibition game just 13 days prior. The USSR won that game 10-3. I was in high school at the time at a large suburban high school in Mpls/St. Paul, MN. I played in high school. Having grown up in Minnesota, hockey is like a religion. Knowing that the majority of the players were from Minnesota, it took on a huge meaning. Add the political events of the time, and it simply couldn't get any bigger. I was a kid watching this live with my dad when it happened. Seeing this now after so many years...I still feel the incredible emotion, tears, pride just like then. Amazing all over again.
I was 10 years old at the time, and I remember my parents watching this on our black and white television. None of us were hockey fans, had no clue what any of the rules were. But I could sense my Mom and Dad were excited about it. Now, at 43, it brings tears to my eyes to revisit this. One of the best moments to be an American.
It just never gets old. I was 9 years old at the time. I remember watching it with my dad in his workroom. I probably didn't realize that it was delayed at the time. But I vividly remember the TV on his workbench and watching the game with him. I appreciated this moment more than ever as I got older.
I remember seeing this live as a ten year old in Germany back then - although I didn't knew a thing about ice hockey, I immediately sensed that this was one of the greatest moments in sports history. So inspiring - I still cry when I see it today, the guys pointing their fingers to the air on the podium was the perfect ending!
Still get chills... most today under 30 don't have any clue of what USSR or Soviet Union even means. I've asked my own nieces and nephews. They give me blank stares. What is it about those who don't know history?
Most people under 30 don't know what the Soviet Union is? How bad is the public school system in your area because I'm 20 now and I knew what the Soviet Union was ever since elementary school history class.
TheVideoGametuts He's never asked more than 2 young people probably. He's an older, white adult so he's going to assume anything he believes is always correct.
I was only 3 when this happened but with the documentaries and movies and retrospectives it has to be my favorite all time sports moment ever. I still get choked up thinking about how amazing this team was and what they meant to the US during that time.
I was 8yrs old in 1980 and this was the 1st hockey game I had ever watched. Hockey wasnt a big thing in Texas back then...I remember my mom jumping up and down and crying like the Cowboys had just won another Super Bowl. My dad got up and walked out of the room for a bit (sports cry). It was a surreal moment for me. Im glad I got to witness it, even though at the time, I didnt fully understand the gravity of the situation.
Well, having grown up playing hockey in Minnesota, this is very familiar. I was in high school at the time. This was SO big for my family and friends. Herb Brooks was like a God to us. There wasn't a kid who didn't dream of playing for Herb at the U of Minnesota. As crazy as it is, I ended up playing at a different college. This is something I will never forget. Brings tears to my eyes each and every time. I cried like a child when I heard of Herbs death. Thank you SO much for this!!! USA USA!!
#10 Johnson's defensive play in that final minute is epic. 3 huge touches to keep the puck away from pursuing CCCP, plus slowing up player entering zone disrupting entry and he's the guy who clears the puck with :05. What a stud. Only 1 marginal shot on goal from outside the blue line at :32. Incredible discipline by "Students".
1:23 My memory of Herb Brooks. It was never about him. It was about the men he coached. He refused to celebrate on the ice bc he didn’t want to take anything away from them. He was too beautiful for this world RIP brother.
I remember watching this game on tv. I was 18 years old and living in a hotel with my family because a fire had destroyed our house. The hotel had a color tv (we had only a black and white tv at out house) It was so exciting. It was a difficult time being homeless but winning that game made everyone happy. We were all cheering and clapping. Very happy memory.
You have done your homework well, my friend! This indeed was so much more than a hockey game at the time. Economics, politics, world powers, wars, and so much more seemed to play a part here. The fact that a bunch of rag-tag college kids beat a solid team of seasoned professionals, just added to the drama and over all excitement of the game. There are dozens of wonderful behind-the-scenes stories about the players too. Glad you enjoyed it!

As a Canadian I was jumping with joy in 2010 when Sid the Kid scored the golden goal to win gold, and I know how that made me feel, therefore, I can very well imagine as the heavily deemed underdog...... To win on home ice to the " unbeatable " Soviet team.....Man Alive, that must of been Epic !! Even tho I'm Canadian this is still one of my favorite hockey moments for sure ! :-)
I was at the Bruins Stanley Cup winning game in May 1970. I was at Game 6 (and Game 7) of the 1975 World Series. I was at both the "Miracle on Ice" game and the Gold Medal winning game over Finland in February, 1980. And I was at Bobby Orr's retirement ceremony at the Boston Garden in January 1979. I am privileged to have seen moments in sport that will transcend the ages and be spoken about for generations to come.
The USSR was the best in hockey. Just look at the statistics: Formed in 1952 until the collapse of the Soviet Union team won the world championships in 22 of 39 (Canada only 5). And in the Olympic Games from 10 tournaments he won in 7 (Canada only once won since the inception of the USSR national team). Soviet national hockey team went undefeated and strongest team ever.
fooloof Yes, the Soviet Union is not Russia, but the Soviet Union was not the strongest because of the larger area, and because of the system, actively develop children's sports equipment provided free of charge, hockey is strongly supported by the state. And if you look at the composition of the USSR in different years, then 95% and then 100% of the players were from the Russian Federation
This moment in history has little to do with how great the Soviet team was. This was an event that helped the demoralized general American public of 1980; suffering economically, unable to fill their cars with gas, and every other damn problem you could imagine for our society at the time... it made us feel better. Defeating "the evil empire" (though it wouldn't be called that for 6 or 7 years) in some way... was a feel good moment and was sorely needed. I could talk about the fact that certain dirty things were afoot with the Soviet hockey team (there is video footage of a soviet player in some pre-olympic match... I don't remember what event, but he gets checked into the boards... his jersey comes up... and he has a freaking gun on his person...... but that's incongruous with the point that I'm trying to make. Your comments are out of place on this video. This isn't about hockey, it's much bigger than that. That being said, indeed the Soviets did always have a great team... but how could they not? They trained 11 months per year... real professional hockey players. This makes the triumph of our amateur college kids that much more impressive and the Soviet's loss that much more humiliating... so HA!
FFcecil1991 you are stupid. the evil empire my ass. soviets never attacked the US, however , we attacked them. learn a little history, typical american ignorant dumbass.

It just never gets old. I was 9 years old at the time. I remember watching it with my dad in his workroom. I probably didn't realize that it was delayed at the time. But I vividly remember the TV on his workbench and watching the game with him. I appreciated this moment more than ever as I got older.
same here, was 9 years old, Dad had the game on, and it was a moment I'll never forget. Dad as well
Single greatest moment in American sports.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? YES! Greatest USA call in Olympic history.
The call still gives me chills to this day! and who in their right mind would give this a thumbs down?
This seriously makes me cry every time I watch it. Such an amazing moment.
This gives me chills and tears every. single. time.
Greatest line in sports history "Do you believe in miracles!?"
Al Muthafuckin' Michaels.
dham2288 Al Michaels in the house
Greatest 60 seconds in ALL of sports history !!!!!
This gives me the chills and I don't even watch hockey. This is fucking awesome! USA ALL THE FUCKING WAY
Watched the movie today, the 43rd anniversary of the game. I love it!! USA!! 🇺🇸 🏒
Tears, every time I watch. Greatest moment in US sports history.
+Tj Weger Nieces and nephews aren't just born knowing things. They have to be taught. Teach them.
+Paolo Camero lol for real
Fuck you old man. People like you are why America is going to shit
The Greatest call in the history of Sports that will never be matched for Eternity.
Thank you Al Michaels
I was only 3 when this happened but with the documentaries and movies and retrospectives it has to be my favorite all time sports moment ever. I still get choked up thinking about how amazing this team was and what they meant to the US during that time.
USA was a huge underdog going into this nobody picked them to even win a medal one of the best moments in hockey history
Before the tournament 90% of people picked them as the bronze medalists. The expectations for them were much higher than for Sweden.
Greatest sports thrill of my life. It helped that, although the game was on tape delay, I watched it at home and didn't know the outcome.
А tribute to Herb Brooks and respect to his boys!
Respect from Bugaria!
Got to watch this to get pumped up for the World Cup. USA USA USA
USA BABY
Very strong baby.
God Bless America to bad the USSR won every other year
That's what happens when you put your heart into it. USA!!
Macped atleast usa had freedoms unlike Russia under stalins rule they were basically robots
You can't watch the last 16 seconds of the game only once. You keep on rewatching over and over until it really sinks in!
The thing to me that makes this so amazing, and still the best sports moment in history, is this wasn't even for the gold medal
The best broadcasting call to ever exist. I don’t even like hockey.
I'm not much of a sports fan, but hearing this always gets me choked up.
40 years later and it is still the greatest upset in sports history.
USA USA!!
A chill goes down my spine at :05 seconds left.
The greatest moment in sports history
1:23 My memory of Herb Brooks. It was never about him. It was about the men he coached. He refused to celebrate on the ice bc he didn’t want to take anything away from them.
He was too beautiful for this world
RIP brother.
God this still gives me chills!!!!!!!
This is why we love sports, miracles can and do happen.
This always brings a tear to my eye :')
If you don't cry after watching this--even a little--you're not human.
"....Do you believe in miracles????? YES!!!!!!"
I was watching this on tv about 50 miles away from Lake Placid. After screaming and jumping up and down, I just cried. Such a victory!
The greatest upset in the history of sports
Ill never forget that moment in my whole life. Visceral. Even when watched on TV.
This never gets old.
INSPIRING!!!!!!! From down under AUSTRALIA.
Chills. Every time
RIP Herb Brooks (August 5, 1937 - August 11, 2003), aged 66
RIP Bob Suter (May 16, 1957 - September 9, 2014), aged 57
RIP Mark Wells (September 18, 1957 - May 14, 2024), aged 67
RIP Mark Pavelich (February 28, 1958 - March 4, 2021), aged 63
You will be remembered as legends.

GREATEST MOMENT IN SPORTS HISTORY!!!
20 college kids changed the tone of a nation. True American heroes forever.
+Dang Lobotomy I put "evil empire" in facetious quotes. I am a History major. You are an ignorant, judgmental, unscrupulous dumb-ass.
Also, your grammar is atrocious. I'm an English minor. Learn when to slap in a comma, idiot.
I love when Dryden yells.."it's over"
