    Fryette all day. No noticeable tone loss and a constant volume sweep. I gig with one and a Marshall SV20. I crank the loudness for distortion and use the Fryette to get the perfect stage volume.

      same, but with a 2525H. The DI out is great to have too, as is the selectable attenuation. And the effects loop for awesome amps that dont have one like an orange AD30. But you nailed it, being able to use the master to get the amp sound you want and then using then PS to manage stage volume and boost the smaller signal...invaluable

    Hi Euge! I appreciate your time to make this video! I was frustrated with the Palmer just watching you trying to dial in a good tone.I can’t believe how it killed the dynamics of your 5150! I appreciate the work you put in changing these attenuators back and forth, a lot of work to show what these units do.

    I'd choose Fryette over any other attenuator. I have 3 Ps-2a and I'm waiting for the new powerstation, which should handle several amps. It should be out in 2024 (I have my sources at Fryette).

    My first “nice” attenuator was a Riviera Rock Crusher recording (which also has “steps” instead of a sweep control) and it was a similar issue. It was hard to find the sweet spot for attenuation and it killed the dynamics. I bought a PS100 and it was a revelation. Never going back.

      I only know of one. The ADA Ampulator. I have this unit. Vintage now. It is all analog power amp and speaker simulator. I used it with JMP-1, ADA MP-1 and Mesa preamps for bass. Just came to mind because I’m getting some of my old rack gear out. I’m fed up with VSTs. :-)

    On the Palmer, wouldn't the Speaker tone be the internal IR that you would send to a line in to your DAW? Sounded like it was doubling speakers on the last few since you are already micing your cab. Totally could be wrong about that but that's what it sounded like to me

    Have to say I’m a bit disappointed in the Palmer. I think the market really could use more competition in the “attenuators that work great and sound great” department. I have the TAE and love it, and won’t be parting with it any time soon. The effects sound great and for recording I think it sounds awesome at the desk. Might get the Power Station too just because while the amp on the TAE can get as loud as my tube heads usually do by themselves, but the dynamics aren’t there when it’s that loud. It’s a bit too flat in the response and feel. That’s where the Power Station really has the edge being a tube power amp that you’re using to push your cabinet with, post attenuation.

    I am a little bit confused about the Fryette. It is not a speaker attenuator, it is a load box basically re-amping (and re-toning) a D.I. Signal?

    • @e.thorsen1937
      @e.thorsen1937 2 місяці тому

      Interesting that Palmer didn’t focus on making the attenuator transparent even though we can see (hear), with the speaker tone knob, that they have the engineering capability of doing so.

    • @WalkerMasuda
      @WalkerMasuda 2 місяці тому

    • @allboutthemojo
      @allboutthemojo 2 місяці тому +1

      @WalkerMasuda that makes sense, but aren't master volumes on some amps placed after the power amp sections? So you can crank individual volumes for the preamp and poweramp and then bring the whole thing down with the master before it hits the cab? For those amps, I wonder if these reactive load attenuators would be necessary

    • @WalkerMasuda
      @WalkerMasuda 2 місяці тому

      @@allboutthemojo As I understand it, by definition, any sort of volume after the power section would be an attenuator. And sure, a few amp designs do have built-in attenuators. I would say that an understanding of where the volume reduction is happening in the signal chain is the important thing so that you know how it's impacting your tone (:

    • @WalkerMasuda
      @WalkerMasuda 2 місяці тому

    I don't understand why you keep raising the volume on the amp every time you hit the attenuation knob on the Palmer. The whole point of the Palmer is to get the amp to the sweet spot and then reduce the loudness by using the Palmer attenuator.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  2 місяці тому +1

      Level matching so me and the people who watch this could hear how it actually sounds without beeing fooled by increased or decreased loudness levels ’cos louder always sounds better to human ears; to hear what the increased attenuation does to the sound without beeing fooled by increased or decreased loudness level.

    Palmer is still resting on their previous success. Analog speaker sim, underwhelming reactive load, all very 20 years ago. It was fine for the time but IR technology is leaps ahead of analog and often now is much better than a mic'd cab both live and in the studio (depending on time and available equipment). MESA learnt this the hard way with their overpriced, bad sounding cabclone, which they fixed by adding IRs. Even amp companies are implementing Two Notes, St Rock and other tech instead of analog cab sims.
