You’re so refreshing to the photo & video community these days. So much photoshop and over edited BS. It’s so refreshing to find people focused on the purity of the art. Photos that speak for themselves and don’t need to be overstated to be powerful. Love your work man - keep it up.
Just getting into photography and I find myself coming back to your videos every single time while researching and looking to learn more. You are the best around!
Thank you! My thoughts exactly. I let the photo tell the story. 99% of the time I shoot jpeg. The fantastic Fuji sims provide all I need. The few times I use editing is to fix very specific aspects.
Thanks for the video, as someone who overthinks editing and makes me dislike sometimes the process, is wonderful to see how you could get great results without too much time processing the image. Btw, on the second pic, where you talked about colour theory, actually there´s a purple on a horizontal strap on the right. So you could have play with that and the blue, to create more depth and having a different visual path for the eye.
I think I need to make this point clear, while Adobe gets close to what they consider Astia or Provia colors, there is a big difference getting a JPEG out of a Fuji camera and processing one in Lightroom.
I've heard a lot of people trashing on Astia since I bought my first Fujifilm camera about 8 months ago. Because of that I haven't used it much. Glad to see someone championing this film simulation--will definitely give it a try now!
So glad I clicked this video. I’ve been shooting my xpro for a year sooc jpgs and somehow never knew you could shoot raw and use Lightroom for the Fuji presets.
Now that I learned everything about Fujifilm cameras thanks to Faizal, the only thing left is the camera itself lmao. Currently saving up for one, I'm sure it will be a good investment.
Been shooting Jpeg+RAW ever since moving to FUJI. Sometimes I'll add or subtract a third of a stop or change to B&W from color. I absolutely love not having to spend anytime on the computer besides importing images.
Thanks for showing these basics! I literally didn't know that Adobe just automatically had all the Fuji Film profiles automatically included, so I'd have to spend time manually trying to match my raw files' to the look I like in my JPEGs
Thank you for this reminder that editing doest have to be super stylized as to what we mostly see online nowadays. Most times i find my edits very discouraging because of what i see online and i tend to forget the simpler the better
nice video bro - and like your calm, clear manner also. I tend to shoot JPEG Provia and punch up the colour +2, highlight -1 and shadows -1. Has worked well for me andI tend spend most of my workflow In exposure and curves ... and I always seem to end up cropping something! I love how you showed how Astia works against darker skin tones - I have aways wondered about the effectiveness as I assume generally when skin tones are mentioned they are referencing to lighter tones (possibly my incorrect assumption!). I will def try this going with Astia for my next shoot and see if I like it. Thanks gains Faizal and you got yourself a new sub!
Thanks for this Faizal, I'm in a similar spot right now where I focus on minimal post-processing so it's always great to compare notes. Digital Astia looks more like film Provia did, could be why you like it so much! I wish Fuji X Raw studio had just a few more tools (namely cropping, spot removal) and it could be all I need.
I mainly shoot pro neg hi jpegs with increased saturation and contrast but seeing your edited photos, I might try out astia again! I remember shooting astia when I first got my x100f, I wasn't a fan of the low contrast high saturation look of it. Maybe I'll try adding some more contrast to get the look that I want, thanks for the video!
Hey brother, a friendly suggestion: Record your video talking bits in Astia too, to really highlight your style. If you're already doing that, freaking awesome!
I have always swapped from shooting raw to just shooting jpeg. After watching this, I may switch to shooting RAW+Jpeg. The reason being that's there's been times where I have shot in the awesome classic chrome only to realise, that the image would actually look good in Astia or say acros. I guess this way gives me the option to play with other fuji sims using the raw at a later stage.
That´s it. Jped simplifies your life by limiting the post-editing, and, therefore, forces you to get familiar with the simulation you chose in camera. I think that´s a valid way of seeing things, especially with a x100v in hands. But I also keep on saving the raws aswell, notebly for the sake of experimenting/learning in this post shot moment we call editing.
Hey Faizal....LOVE This video... thanks to your channel I'm taking my X-t2 out again...purchased the 18mm 2.0... having FUN...why in LR do the Fuji presets not show up? I get "artistic 1" etc? I am on the latest LR version. Do I need to download the presets? I went o the Fuji site but did not see anything.. Thanks for the video and your passion!!
very dumb question but, do you need fuji camera to get this look? Or can i be using a sony camera and still achieve this look by editing? I;m a complete beginner sorry.
Hi. Love your channel. Im in doubt with buying the xt30 ii or the nikon zfc. Help please! I never saw any video getting panning photo, long exposure or you know any techinique on the xt30. It seems is just all about film simulations and creamy pictures. Is that it?
Just found your channel as I am starting to get back into hobby photography after too long of a break. I did a lot of street in the past and usually shot RAW. I am considering just going to JPEG instead. I usually did three styles when converting RAW -- Acros, Astia, or Velvia. I mostly did Acros, but a B&W conversion is easy from color. My edits were very simple like you, a few tweaks in contrast or highlights, add a slight vignette, and basically done. Like you, I wanted the subject to be the focus, not my editing. Great channel. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks for this video! Just getting back into shooting after an extended break for education, and it was really helpful to go through a few basics of editing. With the X100V, you don't need much apart from film simulation and basic edits which is great. I found this like a mini editing tutorial :)
thanks so much for this mate ! i just picked up the original x100 and been trying to figure out the best way to process the images. like u say, it's best to keep it simple and not get carried away with editing 👍 cheers mate !😁
Hey Faizal, thank you so much for your videos. They help a lot! I appreciate the way you talk about the topics and your honesty very much. Stay unique, young man. Peace, Jann
I bought an X100V back in April. Got a used one for a good price which is hard to do, right? Anyway, I’ve tried different simulations dialed in, classic chrome, and then I found Astia… It is my favorite to use when shooting jpeg or to apply to raw. Alos, thanks for the super easy lesson in editing. Less is more and for me I do find this to be true with my editing style. Love your channel, Faizal! 🙏🏻😊
I'm still undecided between Classic Chrome and Astia. I do appreciate that the colors are more accurate with Astia but I also really like how the sky looks with Classic Chrome. As an everyday camera, taking photos of friends, family, etc I use Classic Chrome. I'm also into EDC and for that I use Astia.
Great video Faizal :) I own the Fuji X10 which has been YEARSS untouched, but thanks to your videos, I've been getting my hands on it. The camera lacks Classic Chrome and other latest film simulation features but I'm loving the Astia feature so far! Sometimes I'll increase the highlight tone and play with the color 😊
Nice. I've usually uses Velvia and Classic Chrome, but will give Astia some love. I'm also a big fan of less time sitting at the laptop and more shooting...
thanks just what i needed received my x100v today so this is on point !! 🤣👍 keep up the good work your videos are great and you pictures are awesome !!
I can’t get Lightroom to do the split screen view by pressing Y or Shift + Y. Has this feature changed? Is this in the Develop module? I don’t seem to have this feature in my Lightroom.
if you plan on using presets in lightroom in post, will you usually just use provia/standard for your film simulations while shooting? (editing the jpeg)
stumbled onto this wonderful channel not to long ago and i want to say thanks for you well thought out amazing videos. it's really inspiring me to pick up my x100v and shoot more. i do have a question if i may. can you import into camera or even into the edit process other simulation looks? if so where would one go to find info on this?
Thanks a bunch man! As an X100V shooter myself this was really helpful. Totally agree with your opinion on Astia, I used classic chrome a lot but lately, I’ve been using Astia for getting that fine balance of saturation and vibrance. Really loved the chill and fine vibes of the video. The color grading, sounds, and edit are splendid! Keep up the great work! 🖤
Are those film simulations in Lightroom accurate in comparison to the one rendered on the Fuji camera directly? I assume they tried to recreate the effect of each simulation and you're obviously using a raw file in Lightroom, but I doubt you will end up with 100% the same end result, since you're not making use of the actual Fuji sensor / chip for rendering. Maybe the differences are very subtle and neglectable - I was just curious if you ever felt like you're simulation in Lightroom (pre editing) doesn't look like the jpeg
Hello Faizal, thank you so much for your work and being so inspiring. You actually are the one who finished convincing me to get myself one and... I don't regret it at all! Huge fan. I have one question though: I tried to apply the Profiles on Lightroom but I am afraid that this function disappeared. Can you confirm that? So so so sad... I'm a newby in editing and it would have save me some time. Thanks anyway, I'll go finish watching all your channel. Hello from France! 🇫🇷
If you enjoy the editing process that's great as eventually you will discover that the first edit you need to do is select the interesting images and dump the rest. Sadly that will then leave you with nothing for further editing so it's time to go out and take some decent images: 'Edit Phase One': Engage brain before pressing shutter release!

Haha, I switched to Astia a month or so ago…completely agree!
ayye faizal thanks for this! you’re one of my biggest photography inspirations right now, really enjoy watching you shoot and edit!
I had ZERO clue Lightroom had simulations for my fujifilmx100V already installed! Thanks!!!

That's right, unplugged is the real photography. I don't hate editing but to me it takes away a lot of the beauty and purity of photography.
How do you do that? I just started using a Fujifilm camera (X-T4) I got on a black friday deal and that's one of the things I still don't understand.
Just bought your Analog 2.0 pack, more than anything to just support your channel. Really appreciate your craft and effort
Hey, can you do a video about the black and white Film look on the Fuji?

I notice you didn't apply any lens corrections?
Wanted to try this but why the “camera matching” option doesn’t appear on my lightroom, I use fuji xt20 and the latest lightroom

a video i would love to see is how you organize your photos after a shoot, decide what to post etc! Do you keep mediocre photos or are they deleted?
I'm very lazy when it comes to photo organization. I don't delete any of my photos, I just buy more storage lol

Astia, so underrated!
Which camera did you use to take these pictures?
Great edits! As for myself I'd use Astia more if it weren't for the way it produces reds. I often find reds in Astia to be too pinkish for me.
is it not why it looks great on skin ??

Thanks for the video! Also, having a fujimfilm camera is one of my dreams
Do you get worming in lightroom? if so how do you deal with it?
Is there a known difference in output between applying the film simulation on Fuji X Studios vs. LR?
awesome video! Curious what camera and lens you use when you record these videos, the colors are great, are you also shooting astia? thanks!

Astia deserves a lot more credit than it gets. Classic Chrome is a bit overrated :P
Good stuff! I’m on the same note - editing should just supplement to get the vision you originally had and the story documented rather than a complete transformation and rework
Why
Easiest way to master film sims, shoot food. because it is something you see so often, you'll see clearly what each sim does.
I find that the Astia of lightroom turns skintones too yellow
So you use Astia, but then add even more contrast and corrections? Then it is not "Astia" anymore.
I’ve found myself shooting only jpeg as of late with a Portra 160 recipe I found and just can’t stop using it 🤣🤙🏼 it’s the tones 😉

Astia is my go to, but it takes all the pinks and purples out of sunsets, so it's not great for everything.
