Is this 2019 RAV4 Limited worth nearly $40K?!

  • The Toyota RAV4 is an award winning vehicle. So many great things about this crossover but the sticker price on my Limited trim demands $38K! Thats almost $40K for a Toyota that's missing features in comparison to other vehicles in this price range! It's definitely a great car but I'm not sure it justifies it's high premium. Decide for yourself if you would pay nearly $40K for this SUV! **Remember to like this video if you enjoyed it and subscribe for free to enjoy more content!** :)

I have the XLE and it’s so annoying that only in the higher trim that you can close the two front middle vents. That is something you should have for all trim levels.

Also the Gas mileage seems to be low. It says 26MPG and a full tank is like 335-350miles but I’m only getting average 265-275 per tank. I’m not sure if it’s the way I’m driving or whatnot but I’m not getting a full 335-350 per tank.

@@forrestsautoreviewsofficial Reading the comments, what people do not seem to understand is that when you decrease your rim diameter for comfort, or, increase your rim diameter for performance, is that usually you select a tire size such that the outside diameter of the tire remains the same, so there are no concerns with speedometer calibration.
One method to determining the new wheel/tire size is look at what the manufacturer provides at the different trim levels, test drive that trim level, and see if it works for you. If you go to Tire Rack you can select different trims and see what tires are original equipment. If your trim level includes special brakes that are not on the base model, then smaller base trim rims may not fit. Don't worry too much how many inches +/- you are changing the rim if the size matches an OE trim level.
I think it was Car and Driver that did a racetrack test of different rim sizes, and found that bigger wheels were not necessarily faster. Some of the bigger rims can be very heavy, and heavy is not fast, and it doesn't go over bumps as well and looses traction.
Most people will be much happier with high profile tires because they will get better tire wear, better wet performance, less bent rims, and better comfort. The large diameter low profile trend is all about visual effect and not about practicality.
Rim/tire selection is important. So be aware of the rim and tire weight. You want the lightest wheel weight possible. Low weight improves comfort and road holding. Many OE aluminum rims are actually heavier than the equivalent OE steel rims, This is because light alloy rims (forged) are expensive, and OE alloy rims are made thick for safety. For example The 16"x6.5" steel rims on my car are 18lbs/each while the alloy OE 16"x7" weigh 24lbs/each. If you buy cheap rims, just be aware you may bend some, and the style may be discontinued, and then you are stuck with a non matching rim. so buy an extra, or go with OE.

Thanks for explaining the throttle response and high end torque. The new Camry feels the same way (They both share the same engine). I'm used to tapping the pedal and getting a good pull in my V6. Driving the Camry was so annoying since it felt underpowered. Your analogy on Eco/Normal/Sport settings made it clear. When I test drive the RAV4 I will only use Normal and Sport.

The other features you were saying aren’t available are on the all weather package for about another 1200. Still within 40K. Ventilated Seats, heated steering wheel, auto wipers. We just picked up one very similar to this and I think the value is pretty amazing.

It’s all relative. But personally I don’t think the RAV4 is overpriced. For starters, all the safety autonomous features are standard. As is LED headlights and taillights. The interior quality is far better than that of the CR-V, Tucson, Sportage, and Equinox and pales only to the CX-5 which is an overachiever in its own right. The CX-5 doesn’t have all the standard features of the RAV4 though. Nor is it nearly as spacious so there’s that. The RAV4 Adventure model is also $38,000 and I think is one of the coolest choices in the segment. The Hybrid RAV4 is also $38,000 and frankly has no equal (until the Escape Hybrid arrives). The RAV4’s more knuckle-dragging NA 4 Banger will certainly be more robust than the turbocharged offerings in the Chevy, Mazda, and Honda with the 1.5 in the Honda already having significant issues. Like I said, it’s all relative. Sure you can buy yourself a base model XC40 or RDX, but those cars are significantly more expensive to insure and maintain. They also won’t have all the standard features this RAV4 has. I know this because before my wife and I got her car we optioned out a RDX and XC40 to what we wanted and they were each north of $45,000 and still lacked the features of the RAV4.
In all, I don’t think the Limited is worth $38,000. But that’s really because I don’t think it looks much different than the lower XLE trim. But a RAV4 Adventure or Hybrid with the gloss black trim and black roof for $38,000 is an easy buy. I’d definitely get one over the Equinox, Tucson, Sportage, and humpback CR-V. The CX-5 is the only car that gives the RAV4 a run for its money but like I said, it’s much smaller and doesn’t offer all the standard features. It sure is gorgeous though.

Cecil L I bought the CX5 over the Toyota. It is slightly smaller, but a practical layout with 40-20-40 seats and a hatch attached cargo cover. It is far more comfortable and powerful so I can tolerate the demerits of fuel mileage. I agree with all you say but I’m wondering about what you are considering are standard features that the Toyota has that Mazda doesn’t?

I just bought the new rav4 2019 blueprint limited and loved it. A few things I had to find out the hard way or by accident. 1, the backup camera didn’t have the yellow guide lines. Went to the dealer twice and an experienced service guy had me do donuts in the parking lot to reset it. 10 right and 10 left ( not fast like a race car driver) and it worked. 2, seat memory again went to the dealership twice and they kept it for the day and did a lot of calls to find out it very sensitive you don’t have hold downtime buttons . Just push the set button and the number you want. Last, this is a big one for me. You CAN start your car with your fob. My dealership said you only have startup of the car through the app from Toyota. NOT true. Lock your car with the fob then click the lock button 3 times, on the 3rd time hold three seconds. The lights will flickering and then start. The lights don’t stay on and will shut off when you open the door. It runs for 10 min. The app is nice but not sure if I want to pay 8 dollars a month. Hope this helps someone else that now is part of the rav4 family

Thanks for the tip about remote start using the key fob. It works great. I just bought a 2019 RAV4 Limited Hybrid and so far i like it very much. Only negative I have has to do with the seats. Not particularly comfortable, not ventilated with air (only heated) and the passenger seat is not power and doesn’t have lumbar support. Just as an aside, the memory buttons are broken but that’s minor.
All in all, it seems like a great vehicle. I’m looking forward to getting familiar with all the bells and whistles.

I just bought the 2021 limited and love it!
Idk if something changed on it as far as taking off, but even on eco mode it does very good. As for the sport mode i can really fill a huge difference. We need to think realistically, it is a 4 cylinder engine and the fact that it has an 8 speed transmission makes it fill like it’s not, but can’t also expect it to run like a 6 or 8 cylinder. In my opinion.
Either way I appreciate your awesome review!

Curious if you have much fog or winter/snowy driving experience. Reason I’m asking is that I highly prefer halogen fog lights for those conditions. I live in an area where we get just over six months of winter and we get a lot of fog too. LED fog lamps are too bright and reflect too much light back making it more difficult to see. I realize LED lights look nicer to most people but there are functional reasons to have halogens.

The base LE RAV4 comes STANDARD with and allow me: Lane-keep assist, Radar cruise control, brake assist, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, road sign assist, 7 inch touchscreen, keyless entry, LED headlights, power mirrors, privacy glass....the list goes on. And if you spend $590 extra dollars you get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Along with notorious Toyota reliability. All this for less than $27,000. Resale value is a useless metric at this level; All cars depreciate. You may get a little extra money from a Toyota or Honda, but if you're worried about depreciation then you shouldn't be buying new cars from any brand. If I have to pay a premium to get a premium trade in, then that's just buying a more expensive car.

    • @Exinobel102
      @Exinobel102 5 років тому +5

If you lease, yes resale is huge factor. Higher residual means a lower money factor on a lease because the car is worth more at the end of the term. It also means you will be able to lease more car for your payment. Compare any lease offer from Toyota or Honda and depending sometimes Nissan against the Koreans and the Americans and there is no comparison. A car is a bad investment point blank and no matter what, you are only going to lose money. But id rather lose less by buying a car with better residual, or be able to lease more of a car for the payment. And for those of you who hold your car for 10 plus years, there is that age old saying, "you get what you pay for". Ive yet to see very many 10 yr old Korean cars on the road, but have seen how many Camry's or Accords with 200k miles on the odometer still running like clockwork with nothing but maintenance required.

45 days ago, I leased a 2019 RAV4 XLE Premium and I love it! Not worried about everything being LED because those annoy my eyes etc.
I have cloth seats, which I prefer, so I don’t stick to leather or faux leather in hot weather. Don’t care about having the memory settings for the power seat and the rear view mirror being also a camera but have the auto dimming.
Seats are heated and the color is pretty original. Dealership had only two in the color I have, Lunar Rock. I get tons of compliments! Wish I could post a pic.

Hi Forrest, well we bought our Rav4 and love it to bits. Everything you said was on the money and I'm so glad i watched this helpful video before purchasing, so much so we didnt buy the 2.5L petrol/8 speed auto we had our hearts set on. Yep, we went with the 2.5L Hybrid AWD and were blown away by the difference, its stronger, smoother and more economical. The 2.5L petrol/8 speed auto just didnt do the car justice.
      *EXCELLENT HONEST REVIEW, THANKS!*

That's exactly what I intend to do. An RDX gives driver luxury at a lower cost. Toyota have always been this way. It's as if you have to purchase the car a la carte to get even minuscule features. I can live with a few less miles per gallon for all the extra bells and whistles that I'm getting with an RDX

I had a 2017 Rav4 XLE and I couldn't believe it was 30K but I loved it and found it worth it. Now I just got a 2019 Rav4 XLE and it was 32K. I find it worth it, I feel like it's probably just as good as a VW or RDX with similar options but it's less. I think it's an amazing SUV. I guess I am not surprised the Limited is 38K.

While the top trim level may not be a good deal, the lower or base levels of the Rav4 offer incredible value for money. People who shop for the limited versions of these toyotas are people who have owned toyotas their whole lives and will not be diverted due to the price. However, people shopping the lower trims will be more price conscious which is why they are more competitive.

I just bought the rav limited 2019 awd and it is well worth the cash . the safety features kept my full coverage insurance low and it has more than enough power for me. I do not need to gun it wherever I go . it is a nice smooth ride and is awesome on gas . i'm getting 31.8 miles a gallon combined . I actually drove a 2019 x3 for a month and a 2019 tuscon for a month and both were not as comfortable as this yota. the yota had almost everything that the bimmer had except a 4 banger twin turbo with 255 horse . the bimmer was getting almost 34 a gallon combined . the tuscon was the worst ride I have ever been in . it was cheap and the seating was horrible . the gas mileage sucked in the mtns , but on the highway I was getting about 32 a gallon . i used to run subarus for my transportation business , but wanted to go rav because of the safety features and reliability. we put about 12000 miles a month on a vehicle on dirt rds , twisting and turning mtn rds , and highway . the rav four is well worth the 40 gs in the long run . i'm not sure how you can do a review on a vehicle that you drove for a day or not even . i also want to say that the " leather " is not leather . it is a synthetic material that is easier to maintain and last longer . thanks for the review

Thx for the review. I test drove one of these about a month ago and while it was nice, it didn’t sell me. The engine for one thing is a bore fest. I can’t go from a 268 HP V6 engine to a 203 HP 2.5 Liter 4 cylinder engine. The expensive price tag can’t begin to justify the weak engine. Might as well go for a Lexus if you’re going to pay 38K or more. I don’t understand the halogen fog lights either. Doesn’t make much sense. I’m waiting on the redesigned 2020 Highlander that should be coming out later this year.

I recently purchased a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE. Over all, I think it is the best looking model in the Rav4 lineup. Its loaded with features as you stated. Wireless charging, apple and android auto, lumber seat and very good performance. I do have my qualms with Toyota though. For 38k, which there was not much of a price reduction from sticker, I would have expected drivers memory seat and back lit driver's side power window-door lock switches. Why Toyota cheapened out here in ridiculous. The Rav4 also has a digital rear view mirror, which is a cool feature but, I'll never need to use it so imo, it is wasted money on technology.
My '17 CX5 Grand Touring has heads up display, memory seats, power passenger seat, heated rear seats. But no Apple or Android apps, and the nav technology seems dated. It is 3 years old, with 30k miles. No mechanical problems great on gas and I paid 33k for it. Both SUVs are excellent. But they have these frustrating lack of features with them.

Forrest, you didn’t talk about how quiet this car was on the highway? I just drove one today and found it extremely noisy on the highway (probably because it lacked double paned glass and sound proofing). Not only that, the engine was loud, raspy sounding and doesn’t like to be pushed to that sky high RPM for power. Merging on the highway with this car is a real PAIN... I basically had to floor it. I couldn’t live with this car longer than a week.

A Santa Fe starts at 32K Canadian with AWD , same as a base Rav4 , the FE feels 2x the quality and is much more substantial on the road.... The only reason a person would take a Rav4 (IMO) is brand loyalty .. the Toy is not that much more reliable these days.. the gap is closing real fast.

One thing you forgot to mention that was either on this vehicle or can be optioned in that I think is pretty cool, a 360 degree rear view mirror. I CAN'T stand CVTs so I am glad Toyota went with a traditional auto even if it could use some tweaking if not in sport mode. I just checked the ground clearance on the Toyota site and I think they made a mistake. The Limited which is the more luxury oriented RAV4 shows to have 8.6 inches of ground clearance with the offroad RAV4 Adventure is listed as having only 8.2 inches so I think all versions have 8.6 inches of ground clearance. I think the high price is more reflective of both the trim (it being the Limited model) and also people's seemingly insatiable thirst for SUVs and Crossovers.
