  • Who doesn't love a V8? The Vauxhall/Holden Monaro, with its LS1 engine, is an utter brute. There are not many words more fitting than this to describe this Australian working-class hero.
The owner of this Monaro is no stranger to powerful cars. Andy Robinson, owner of Robinson Race Cars, produces some of the craziest drag cars the UK has seen.
Do you think the Monaro is a future classic?

I had a 2006 a Pontiac GTO (the American version of this car, basically just a rebadged Monaro with the steering wheel on the left) and I LOVED that car. The only thing I regret in life, is selling it. I eventually boosted it and made over 700whp.

I remember that Corvette powered Aussie from my childhood. This car was the centerpiece of the 2004 Universal Studios TV movie, "The Last Ride," with Dennis Hopper (produced by Stu Segall and shown on the USA Network) Plus, A paramedic from my hometown of Salem, NJ, has the very last Pontiac ever made. A Holden based G8 (white with black striping and an LS3)

I'm a UK Monaro owner, and one of my biggest regrets is selling the supercharged one i had, it was 615 hp and absolutely immaculate - easily one of the best in the country. Three years on and i have another Facelift CV8 which is standard power-wise but has pedders lowered suspension, rip shifter and a catback exhaust and is still quick enough with its 350hp to give you a bit of a shove when you plant the throttle. Awesome cars, and i'll quite often go into the garage with a beer and just sit and look at it.

Great to see some recognition for our cars. It's always an event taking the Monaro out and everybody seems to love it from shows to driving through towns. The car featured is the Monaro CV8, if you want more standard power and a bit more aggressive looks, check out the LS2 powered VXR with 400bhp standard.

One of my iconic childhood memories was driving in the Northern Territory, around Tenant Creek/Daly Waters in our family Pajero. There was no speed limit back then. So we were doing about 120-130km/h to save fuel... dad said he could see the fuel gauge go down if we went any faster ha. Think we topped out at 160km/h once. Anyway, this yellow Monaro flew past us, overtaking at about 200km/h. It kept going until it finally disappeared from view over the horizon.

Doesn't she babble a lot of nonsense... 07:25 - No, this engine is _not_ "really harking back to the Holden V8s, the Commodores..." or to the 'Supercars' racing series.
The LS1 is a U.S. motor, while the Holden V8 was an entirely Australuan design, sharing not a single component with the U.S. powerplant.
Also, Holden's V8 Supercars entries didnt use the Holden V8 _or_ the LS V8. Nor did any race team ever race with this model Holden Monaro

Welllll, no the Holden 253/308 ci original V8 came about after Holden engineers went to GM USA in the late 1960s looking to design a V8 for Australia, they picked what they thought were the best parts of Chev, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Caddy V8s of the time , in fact more Oldsmobile V8 than anything , Olds intake /exhaust port locations only Holden and Olds use these locations of all GM V8s, same uprite 6 deg valve angles same as Olds, same Valve gear and alloy bridge rocker design, same intake manifold design and starter location , then they used small block chev bore spacing , and Caddy V8 oiling system . ! So it's a combination of many GM V8s. Holden raced this Monaro in the 12 hour series and 2 427 Monaros came first .

You could get away with calling an executive sedan (bargain spec) optioned with the LS and a manual a muscle car.
The Monaro though, nope. It was made with an intent to perform well in every aspect. Good handling, very predictable. Forgiving despite the torque. Not cheap. This was never a poor mans car.
The 427 variant was a weapon at Le Mans. That version was a homologation special. That would fall into the sports car category. It was built to go racing. Nothing else.
The mass produced Monaro was a sports tourer. Not even close to enough power to be considered muscle. Too well mannered as well. It was made to take corners well. It had appropriate brakes for the performance. It was made specifically to handle the power it was delivered with. It was a long distance car. It was not terrifyingly dangerous at the speeds it could achieve. It was not just a drag car ill suited to much else.
Muscle cars are cool. This Monaro is cool. Still not a muscle car.

A few rules about modifying performance cars for road use: it has to look stock standard or close to it. Nothing that draws attention. It must still have a very flat torque curve. Flexibility is super important. You should be able to do long distance drives (> 1,000km per day) in comfort and still have the ability to fang it. That basically rules out M3s and M5s. Too harsh and jiggly. You shouldn't feel like you need a kidney replacement after a drive. Looks like this Monaro ticks most of the boxes.
PS. I know someone with a highly modified LS3 Commodore. Now that is a beast 😁😃

This is great ....Even though I'm a huge Ford fan and have a FG XR6 I also really like plenty of Holdens and the last few years via VE and VF were world class..Also though with Ford the last Falcons were the same either via the 5.0 supercharged V8 or the incredible Barra 4;0 litre Turbo ..Our Aussie cars were and still are gems ...with character as opposed to the crap they build now with the charm of a wet sponge ..

All wrong! The Monaro was built by Morris Industries Hong Kong and exported to Australia with Morris Holden badges, UK with Morris Leyland badges as the Morris Leyland MG Vauxhall Monaro and to US with Oldsmobile Tesla Silverado Pontiac badges as the GTO. GTO was the name of the country in Hong Kong where the Morris factory lives (Guong Tong Owong). There is no such place as Adelaide or South Australia in Australia which is in New Zealand. Every Holden from the Morris 48/215 (FX) to the Morris VF Commodore was made in Hong Kong and exported to Australia with Holden badges. The only cars made in Adelaide New Zealand Australia are Hyundai and Great Wall.
Built by Holden in Adelaide South Australia 😂🤣Yeh right. Next they'll probably say there was a Morris Holden factory in some place called Elizabeth in Adelaide South Australia. As if a town would be called a girls name, I mean come on.

The sad thing about the Holden ignoring build quality is even the OEM cars can’t put their power down in any gear… and that’s NA but the v8 6.2 litre is it’s best feature.

Had one back in 2005, it was rubbish. A new steering rack each year, $1000 worth of tyres every year, new brake discs every two years, city driving refill the tank (75L) every 3 days, it was nothing but a money pit.

That all sounds more like your driving habits. I have a 2001 SS Ute with the 5.7 on 19 x 8.5 rims, and in the 18 years I have had it, one steering rack, tires last 3 to 4 years and in city driving I fill up once every 8 to 10 days. I paid $23K for the car, in the time I have had it, have spent around $5K on new parts.

Not heard of anyone needing a steering rack every year! You either had some very bad luck or something else was going on!
