They’re called melanistic coyotes and are most common in the northeast and especially the southeast. It’s theorized that the genes linked to black coat color are associated with a friendlier disposition. Look up Carmine the friendly coyote, you might enjoy it.
If this is in the East, it’s a melanistic coyote. Melanistic coyotes are more common in the northeast and especially the southeast. Furthermore, coyote/dog hybrids are extremely rare, contrary to popular myths. Coyotes mate for life, raise pups together and are only fertile/viable for a short period of time during the year. Coyotes only mate with dogs in areas with very low coyote numbers, when they have no other options. They would rather eat or intimidate a dog than mate with it.
Never seen a black one thats cool here in nebraska we get some that are light allmost white ish brown but black thats cool is it a cross breed with dog or full coyote? Because we also get some cross breeds to...but still look like norm coyote for most part
Not a pest. Coyotes are a native species. We’re lucky they filled the niche of apex predator after humans killed off gray wolves from most of the country. They keep the rodent population in check, which reduces ticks, other parasites and diseases. Trust me, without coyotes, life would be far more miserable due to rodents. Furthermore, without coyotes, the feral cat population would boom to combat the rodents. In turn, cats kill off many native species of birds so we’d have a drastic loss of biodiversity. Coyotes are nature’s way of looking after itself, even when humans are dead-set on destroying the habitat for their egos.
@@Jet_Threat there are over 2 million coyotes in the USA. Closer to 4 million if you count the population in the rest of the North American continent. Of those, approximately 500,000 are killed by hunters and trappers in the USA. That is not adversely affecting the ecosystem.
@@willhorting5317 I never said it did. As a matter of fact, killing them doesn’t work. Their litter sizes expand to replace more coyotes for each one shot. No matter how hard humans try, their numbers keep growing because they are a necessity for the environment. The point is that farmers need to find better ways to protect livestock, such as getting an LGD, improving enclosures, etc. State politicians like to address the “coyote problem” rather than actually help improve farming conditions because it’s cheaper and they can keep up the appearance of making efforts without ever really solving the problem. Hence why many states have legalized coyote killing competitions. They know it doesn’t work, but hey, they can keep their gun-touting citizens placated by letting them hunt as many as they want. Yeah, killing coyotes doesn’t work. Their litters grow to replace multiple coyotes for each one shot. So it’s time hunters be real with themselves and admit they love shooting them for their ego. It’s a shame; scientists could have studied it. It’s theorised that some of the genes associated with a black coat may make coyotes friendlier and less fearful (look up Carmine the friendly coyote).
