    Have you ever tried to harden wood by letting it dry in cement powder under a vacuum? The cellulose should absorb the cement as the wood expels its moisture. Putting it under pressure may help keep the board straight and bring fresh cut over sized closer to its final size without processing it further. I have a feeling that Starlite was made in a similar way but different chemicals.

    When baking sugar is considered a liquid ingredient to be added with the liquids instead of the dry. thus it may be interesting to reduce the water volume by the amount of sugar added this also explains the increased liquidity causing more slump.

      Most of the additives come premixed and look like maple syrup. "Retarder" - is some form of sugar that is usually brownish color so you would know if you added retarder or not.

    I had a friend in the ready mix business...he told me they kept pallets of sugar at the plant. If a mixer got caught in what would be a prolonged traffic jam on the highway (crash?) they'd load a pallet onto a pickup, get out there and load the drum with the sugar. He said it "killed" the set. He said its scary when you're trying to travel up the shoulder and way up you see your equipment rockin' side to side! The sugar breaks it up.

      U, sir, have been doing ancient concrete research! Haha me too. Theres granite powder and quartz crystal powder and ground glass powder, all those in aggregate size chunks too. Theres synthetic fiber additives to give strength like straw bricks, but wont rot and fire resistant, fiberglass fibers, plastic fibers, some people r figuring out how to add graphene!
      The volcanic ash is a must for sure. And im sure theres liquid additives we could add to the salt water for diff effects, might even mix cement mix with epoxy resin instead, see how that works out.
      Iv always wanted to build a house out of multi ton granite blocks like the pyramids. Made right, that house will be usable for over 6000yrs.

      Howdy Stephen. Yes, adding sugar can lead to a stronger concrete. This is ultimately caused by a higher degree of cement that has dissolved and then reacted with available water. Bear in mind that if too much sugar is used, you can put the concrete to sleep and strength development can be delayed for long periods of time or not completely develop.

    I keep reading that cement on its own is not very strong at all and is just a binder. But just watched a video where pure cement withstood 8000psi and concrete failed at 2500psi. So is it really weak on its own ?
    I'm making some concrete statuary and had two questions. Are the larger stones necessary for strength or will sand suffice .
    Second , I want to add some designs to my statuary by hand using pure cement as a sand mixture will not flow if I put it into a piping bag. Will using pure cement be a bad idea ? If so how do I make a sand mixture flow enough to be piped out of a bag . I just tried it and the sand compacts and does not extrude thru the nozzle . Thanks

    • @IntelligentConcrete
      @IntelligentConcrete  3 роки тому

      Howdy Robert,
      Cement on its own is one ingredient in the concrete mixture. The ultimate strength and durability is based on the amount of water, type and amount of rock and sand, as well as chemicals. I think its always good to use a concrete (cement, rock, sand, water) as much as your mold will allow you. Using a neat cement paste often leads to shrinkage and cracking.

    What about adding salt? The Romans made concrete that would harden under water. Scientists have found that the salt water makes it harder.👷

    • @thehalfnam4331
      @thehalfnam4331 2 роки тому

      Salt has been added to concrete a lot in the past as sodium is a cheap and powerful accelerant and antifreeze, unfortunately along with an efficacious dose of salt comes a lot of chloride, which wreaks absolute havoc on steel reinforcement and corrodes the concrete from the inside out. As far as Roman cement, the salt in the seawater used to make it is just a small part of the equation in which many other minerals in that water could be bigger contributing factors to the concrete’s durability. Not too mention our common mindedness Portland cement easily hardens underwater as well, it’s actually quite beneficial to the curing process and has always been known as such.

      That is a great question Effy, will the sugars in honey have the same impact as the processed sugar.
      We would need to do a solids content of the honey and then adjust the design water to take into account the water that is brought by the honey for the mix.
      But yeah, challenge accepted Effy...
