Even though it is a harsh place to live I appreciate the video and how you presented Utqiagvik. Not everyplace we travel to is grand and beautiful. When you live in such a severe environment you do the best you can, but the reality is that this is the life they live and it’s not for us to judge how they live. Makes us appreciate what we have and where we live.

I came here to say the same thing. Whenever I see old buildings like this I think about the many stories they would tell if they could. Robert made the effort to shed a little light on the history of the natives and days of past. I personally appreciate that.

@jaime5649 as an inupiaq that lives up here in the north, Kotzebue, to be specific, I can tell you with confidence that all the best parts of civilization haven't reached up here yet. We finally have paved roads in our city, but they are wavy and cracked due to permafrost melting and the ground heaving. We still hunt and fish and berry pick. It is our way of life. We haven't had a chance to live like rich people and gain all of the fancy acoutriments that come with civilization.. yet...
Edit: Gasoline is $8.959 per gallon, and milk is $12.49 per gallon. Eggs are $10.99 for an 18ct, a loaf of bread is $4.99... FYI the cost of living prohibits living a lavish lifestyle...

I guess it wouldn't have looked so grim if the sun had been shining and the mud had dried out, and I understand why those remote places end up looking like junk yards. Maybe the hotel just isn't very helpful because it doesn't have any competition? Your commentary put a much better spin on the town, as did the sighting of the sea ice in mid-summer. I think that's a great documentary-style video you made there Robert, so thank you for taking us along to see what it was really like.

I think he went in the off season. In the winter all is frozen over and snow so no mud and only silhouettes of past treasures covered with pure white snow.

@imagseer yeah, it does look a lot different under better lighting in the summer, like in July it is known as The Land of the Midnight Sun.
And in the midst of winter, the sun doesn't rise for 3 months...

Thank you for taking us along to experience what you experienced- on a walking tour no less. Very interesting to learn about this desolate place, and it was definitely a good choice to include it amongst the more typical and expected Alaska experiences. The new music is very fitting and as always, adds that little something that helps to make your videos a cut above.
Utqiagvik, is definitely not for everybody. I am guessing that the majority of those that live there are incredibly firm-hearted human beings. With deep respect for their 1500 years of heritage and the continuation of it, most people probably don’t consider their life to be one of lack. It is just “their way”. The rest are there to support industry and get paid the big bucks for doing so. Seems like everyone works together for the greater good. This was an unexpected but enjoyable episode.

A very interesting vlog. Of all of the rv travel videos of yours and others I have watched, this may be the first time that there is a destination that I will probably skip when in that area. I can understand the geographical, historical and industrial significance of such a place and as well as its roots and origins, but perhaps not the most touristic place in the world. strange to see a place where roads are basically frozen ground for 9 months of the year and for the other three they are mud. That perma frost makes construction of any sort very challenging, hence many of the buildings lifted off the surface. Thank you for capturing it all. You may have saved me the trip :). Looking forward to the rest of this trip and beyond.. As always, safe travels......

I grew up in Canada and experienced temps in the winter of -40 F in winter but still can't imagine living in Barrow even though our cars would be just as muddy in the spring. Thanks for taking us on that journey. My wife worked at the Samuel Simmons hospital for almost 2 years during the pandemic. Utqiavik is a very interesting town, but as you stated, there's not a lot to do. Anybody thinking of going to Point Barrow, no taxi is going to take you there. You need an ATV, side by side, or a serious 4X4 with major ground clearance. I saw vehicles like a Ford Expedition buried up to its axles when it tried to go to the point.
