- How to get chores done with a toddler? By turning it into a practical life activity! The simplest and fastest way to start Montessori at home is through practical life. So today, I’m sharing with you our Montessori say in the life-practical life edition. Some may call these Montessori daily chores, but I assure you they are more than that. These practical life activities for toddlers allow our kids a chance to be involved with the family, practice autonomy, work on their sequencing skills, and many other skills without the need for new Montessori materials! Please remember we have been working on this Montessori daily schedule for a while now! It takes time and experience for babies and toddlers to grasp the routine and refine the motions needed for these activities. But the best way for them to improve is to start! I hope this video provides you with some ideas of how you can set up your own Montessori daily practical life routing and get more chores done with your toddler!

When did you start teaching Stella? I have a 12 month old and would love to teach him!
I guess you could say from birth? We always practiced Montessori at home, so I was always including her in daily tasks (even if it was holding her while she's digesting and switching laundry, or folding laundry near her during tummy time). Around 12 months we got her weaning table and functional kitchen set up, so everything started to fall more into place in terms of specific tasks she could do in the kitchen. But I also have a video right at 11-12 months of the practical life activities she enjoyed because that was the bulk of what she was interested in back then! ua-cam.com/video/O3h71gv7Uq4/v-deo.html
Awwwwhhhhh mybgodh this is too cyuute. I love the different ways you have given her access to her own items for her care of self tasks and how much she has picked up on with the steps to each process.
One huge difference with Stella is she actually likes bananas 😅 ive fully given Huda the responsibility of peeling and slicing bananas for any snack or meal especially with my pancakes mainly its helped her to have a few bites lol oh and Huda loves satsumas and other peeling oranges its the first colour she recognized and verbalized too due to this.
I know i need to model more double handed transportation of items like plates which is definitely what Huda needs some practice with too. Its my faukt i know just without realising that she's watching me i just do what i need to do and the next thing i notice is she's back to using one hand🤦♀️
But mostly im so impressed by how much she is capable of right now! Its like a sudden burst of ability they just have this extra coordination of their fine motor skills and gross motor.
Their sense of order is amhaving to witness and keeps me in check to on days where i just want to be lazy i still have her to give me the motivation to maintain a standard for the way we do our day to day taskd.
The one thing i noticed was how focused and confident they are with their own areas of work thier own places in the house that i guess give them a sense of belonging here in the home. Its really nice for thier sense of self formation. With them washing up and putting away their plates and cutlery etc it is visible how important this sort of responsibility over their own items is.
In the day to day it helps with their general feelings towards us as a family not having to depend on us or want independence from us in moments that typically would be challenging, without this extra sense of fulfillment they seem to get from doing their own practical life work.
It helps them practically and mentally which then helps our relationship with them and helps the family as a whole to feel more at ease living together with these moments of not being dependant upon us. Independence.
I doubt think i commented about the phrase 'dependency breeds resentment' and personally the way we were brought up first hand i can say this is a very real statement for the dependent person and the one they depend on. So just moments of having control over something shows for a little less coflict to arise.

I love the long comments! Stella was originally very offended by bananas but somehow we now need to always have at least 10 bananas at home! 😅
I've also noticed that at this age their growth is exponential! Obviously they're been growing and learning a lot up until now, but it feels like every day we are seeing new skills or a new understanding emerge. It is absolutely fascinating and really helpful at a time when teething, big emotions, and sleep regressions hit 🙈
I think because my brother is so much younger, and with being an immigrant family early on, I naturally ended up picking up how to do tasks independently to help my parents. It was almost automatically that I planned to set up an environment that would foster the same for Stella, regardless of following Montessori. Even thinking back to my favorite memories-so many are filled with peeling veggies for dinner, baking, sewing, ironing, cleaning... doing the cool adult tasks alongside my favorite people. It's such a blessing to be able to provide that for our daughter!

Socks even frustrate me 😂 it’s still a skill we are working in, shoes at least Zander can do now. Definitely teaching putting clothes on and off is super important and of course the hardest
Has Zander been in the phase when he learns how to take off something and just KEEPS GOING?! We have reached that with sweaters and luckily we don't go anywhere but it's hilarious 😆
Does she stay seated at meal times or do you have to redirect her?
When she is truly hungry, she stays seated. After she finishes her main meal (oatmeal at breakfast, soup at lunch, etc) she often wants something more like fruit, cheese, veggies, etc. When I used to hand them to her, she would eat a bit, get up, take a few bites standing, sit down, etc. She doesn't run off but she did keep standing up. In large part, my fault because I was eating my breakfast and lunch standing up in between getting hers ready.
Now we have her little snack area with the fridge, so she can get up and grab what she needs. That break to head to the fridge has helped her stay seated for the second part of the meal too. If I sit at the big table at that point, she will sometimes bring her plate to me and join me at the big table!
As of late, she tries to scoot around on her chair while chewing. So she understands she needs to be seated while eating and is testing that boundary by moving while seated 🙈 Since we have set the boundary clearly and consistently, it does not take too much effort (most days but not all) to get her back to the table.
But she's still a toddler. She definitely has her off days too!!
Omg her table setting skills are amazing!!!!!
In person, it's hilariously matter of fact... especially when she's hungry and setting up as a sign of "feed me!" 😅
