Hey, I’m from India. Huge fan of you guys! I’ve been building my collection. It has Seiko, Casio, Timex for now. And my fav watch is must de Cartier. Will buy it someday in my life!
Bummer. I was expecting this series to be about minutiae and fun stories and deep dives into horological rarities. I'm sure there are people out there who see "The Vintage Rolex Episode" and are pleased that it's someone in charge of selling vintage Rolex talking about selling vintage Rolex, but that person isn't me.
Great conversation, and great notes about the scholarship and discourse around the details starting to be lost. Hodinkee used to be great at that stuff. Tastes change for sure; if I wear my sub my partner calls it the "old man watch" but loves my vintage Heuers. Rolex has also become unappealing because there are so many around, even of vintage models (over 400 5513s on Chrono24 right now). If you see one, its really a case of "what's different about yours?" rather than owning something really unique. Also Rolex really carries a finance/tech bro vibe that people don't necessarily want to project out into the world these days.
My opinion on the lack of great interest on the Datejust is that there are lots of them around. White collar folks were them and well cared for. Where as the Submariners, they were tool watches, more prone to damage, and less of them around.
wow this is entertaining and makes me feel safe as a collector. It brings back to my sane mind that it is not all about money. Thumbs up! content is getting better each day!
Jay Z is not a good example of an enthusiast. He can afford to buy whatever he wants. At that level of the watch game he is just a consumer. It would just be that he wanted to wear the best expensive vintage Rolex one day. His personal shopper would have just put it on the daily shopping list. Imo he is a bit late to the game. There are other celebs out there who have been into vintage for a lot longer.
I think the Datejust's problem is that it is not a sports watch (I know there's a debate here, but it's at least not as sporty as the more expensive Rolex models). And I guess it also lacks a cultural association that takes it beyond the watch world of the caliber that James Bond and Paul Newman are for the Sub and Daytona respectively. Additionally, it's probably something to do with supply as well. I don't know precise numbers, but I believe Rolex made many more datejusts between, say, 1950 and 1990 than they did Subs, Daytonas or GMTs. And lastly, another problem for the Datejust is probably the Day-Date. It's the same story with Rolex and Tudor. The datejust will likely never overtake the day-date in demand and iconic status because it was designed and marketed as the 'baby day-date'. As for the Explorer, I think it shares the issue of not having a marked cultural association beyond the watch world. Yes, the Everest story is one, but Sir Edmund Hilary is not really a popular figure today and what's more, the watch worn on Everest was not an Explorer as we know it today. I think it's a good opportunity for those of us without such deep pockets that we can get a great vintage explorer for prices that are nowhere near those of other vintage sports rolex. Enjoyed the conversation!
@@oysterman962 Thanks for that productive response. Also, it’s literally no different to seeing a watch on someone and liking it. Assuming all of your watches are piece uniques though right as you “have your own style”.

He sounds more articulate than you. Btw attending a prestigious college doesn't count for anything. My feet actually sweat less without socks.
