Great project! When mixing cement, if you use a garden ho in the wheelbarrow...it’s a lot easier. We did cement projects with my dad when I was little, we always thought it was fun to mix the cement. Who knew, lol! 😁 You could also try a 5 gallon bucket and a mixing wand for your drill. I have seen some people lay the Glass and pottery pieces face down in the mold and then place the cement on top of it. The surface of your stepping stone will be somewhat smoother. Sealing the top of it with something is a great idea, should help keep water out of the cracks...you don’t want them to freeze and thaw in the winter and break apart. Love your videos!!!

Actually I used some of my broken plates, cups and bottles and made a frame to the bathroom mirror! To make them smooth I used wall plaster and sand it. After that, i protected with varnish and voila!! Really nice👍🏼👍🏼

You should throw an epic multi-tier fountain to go outside of the studio. I'd love to see that.

They came out nice. Something else that would look really cute, (I've done one) is throw a small scale bird bath to complement the stepping stone.

Add hardware cloth to the cement mold for durability. Fill half the mold, place hardware cloth in the center, fill mold up. It helps prevent breakage.
Edit: New Thought! EDGING! I wonder if hubby can make me a form to make border edging? I bet he can!

Also, rice husks (organic fill) or shredded nylon would also give some added strength to the cement.

Hey Jon, I'm thinking that epoxy will make your pavers really smooth, as in slick when wet. Maybe you should leave the texture in there. I'm just sayin, I'd be the first to slide off of the paver and land in the plants. Just a thought.

Consider what freezing temps will do to clay items sitting on wet soil. Epoxy May cause the pavers to be slick. Test first.

Great idea! I actually lost an entire kiln load of my tiles because of a kiln misfire. So sad but I put them on the ground and made a path from my studio to my kiln building. Worked great! They have been out side for a couple of years. Your pavers look fantastic.

Best to make the pavers first, then when its cured , use outdoor tile adhesive, to adhere to the pavers then grout it using outdoor grout...will last longer 👍

Haha hardware hank! Love that. And when we McGiver it together we call it hardly aware hank!!
Ps I add 3 quart of additional mortar to each wheel Barrow load of redimix to keep my pavers from breaking apart. I sometimes sift out the biggest rubble too to create a finer tighter stronger. mix

I realize I am commenting MONTHS after this video was posted...but...
I've seen where people do these but upside down. Place the Mosaic pieces upside down in the bottom and then carefully add the cement over it. This creates a smoother surface when done. No raised edges.
Also, I would be concerned about epoxy creating a slippery surface to walk in when wet.

Another idea is to use old cake pans, put the stones or glass or whatever your using in the bottom, shiney side down and put concrete on top. Pop them out when they are done.

Ok John, just gave you a huge kudo on David’s page! I’ve been watching you for awhile, and I’m trying to throw big pots now...without a lot of luck, but I’ll keep trying. The last video of yours throwing with, I think 6 lbs (?) helped, but I need to watch a few more times! Anyway, I came to this video because I’m putting in a shade garden, with big pavers meandering throughout. When you get about 1/2 way through the gardens, there’s a sitting area with the pavers placed in a level pad. I’m having all my pottery friends come, (it’ll be a party!) bring their old, rejected & discarded pots. We’ll smash em’ up and make a mosaic between the pavers. Im calling it my ‘Walk of Shame’! 😂
I just needed to know if I should put concrete between the pavers, and yes, I think I better, to set the broken pottery pieces in.
Good luck with David! Hope you two can get together! I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!

To prevent them breaking, cut out appropriately-sized squares of chicken wire fencing and embed. And, you'll have perhaps one problem with the deep-set china pieces: they will fill up with dirt really quickly. A smoother surface would help there!
