I believe the answer is probably fairly simple: intelligent life is incredibly rare, spatial and temporal distances are vast. That's it.
We are likely not alone in the observable universe, but the chances of us observing another civilization are unfathomably small. Contact is even less likely.
The EM / radio bubble that would allow any alien civilization to detect us is about 100 light years in radius. This is nothing. If we do end up wiping ourselfs out in the next couple of centuries (high likelyhood), then this bubble will become a shell, and only civilizations that happen to search for radio signals when this incredibly thin shell intersects their observational equipment will know of our existence. The same is true for us. There might be a few bubbles and shells like this, slowly expending and fading into the cosmos, but the chances of any one of them intersecting another civilization seem incredibly remote, even if both originate from within the same galaxy.
If the speed of light really is a hard limit (which it certainly appears to be), then even a civilization high up in the Kardashev scale would need millions of years to travel beyond their own galaxy.
I'm not at all surprised that we haven't seen anyone, and I'm not holding my breath, even though I'm sure there's something out there.
They are simply too far away.
I also believe that we are lucky that this is the way things are.
If we did encounter another civilization, then they would almost certainly be far beyond our capability, and we would be completely at their mercy.
At least now we can be the gods or destroyers of our own little pocket of space.

Your analysis and comments about this subject pretty much mirror my beliefs and opinions.
Plus I found the statement from (Phil Morrison via Jill T) that looking at communicating/reaching other civilizations in terms of "colonization" somewhat disturbing.
The "colonization" of the Americas by Europeans may be a good example of this. While North America is a technological, economic and democracy marvel, the impact on indigenous people has not been.

Agree with you that there's every possibility that there's intelligent life out there, but that the vastness of the universe prevents us from ever meeting each other. These people definitely sound a bit nutty.
Just imagine that another civilization similar to ours is flourishing on the other side of the milky way galaxy. This similar civilization would be over 100,000 light years away. Accordingly, a message from that civilization would take 100,000 years to reach earth. A howdy do reply and response would take 200,000 years. Does anyone think that we'll still be here in 1,000 years much less 1 or 200,000 years. What would be the purpose of contacting these other people? Communication would be nearly impossible due to the vast distances. We're all alone in reality whether or not there are other civilizations out there.
Probably way more than a dozen... more like quadrillions of advanced civilizations in the Universe.

If they exist, my guess is they are a billion or two years more advanced. If they are a billion or two years more advanced, they might know everything they could ever possibly know about us and fundamentally have no reason or desire to interact with us. It's like asking why a scientist has never bothered to visit the algae at the bottom of the lake down the road from my house. (Because there isn't anything remarkable about that lake, and scientists already know everything interesting about algae generally--they don't need to visit that particular lake for any particular reason.)
It would be impossible. The two first generation of stars didn't have elements for life. And among planets orbiting stars with those elements; earth is between the 10% oldest.
MINEIRO - I am afraid your "10% oldest" data must be wrong. For one thing, new planets are being discovered every now and then and also, how could one possibly calculate the age of a distant planet? Bare in mind that a year ago it was discovered that almost everything we "thought we knew" about our neighbor Pluto proved to be shamefully wrong. Furthermore, the first few generations of stars occurred quite rapidly due to the density of matter in a much smaller space.
greyeyed123 - I quite agree with you. I frequently find the same careless precision even among renown "scientists". Notice that even Kuhn, whom I respect for his honesty and hard work, talks only about hundreds or even thousands of years in most of his interesting videos. A plus or minus billion year difference, would make an unimaginable and unpredictable difference, which these people seem not to notice. To tell you the truth, I regard their arguments remarkably childish and naïve. Lol
I dont accept the argument regarding advanced aliens not wanting to visit or contact us because they are bored of us etc. Life may be ubiquitous but sentience may be rare. The vast distances in the galaxy are just a huge barrier to communication. The earliest terrestrial transmissions are less than 100 years old, that's 100 light years of distance covered. The inverse square law also makes these transmissions extremely faint. Let's keep transmitting and searching and see what happens.

We only discovered radio waves a couple of hundred year ago, and now we think the whole universe use that for communication? Its like a primitive tribe discovering fire, and thinking all universe is communicating with smoke signals.
Not really. Radiowaves are still light waves and they are the fastest means of communication for that reason. So aliens would no doubt use some sort of electromagnetic communication if they exist.
Got to love it how people think there's some sort of 'sub space' transmission system to make FTL communication many times quicker or near instantaneous. And everyone else in the Galaxy \ Universe has discovered it except us.
If they have discovered a faster means of communication than light, it only makes the fermi paradox worse anyhow.

I used to think there must be many intelligent life forms in our galaxy but what’s confusing is we aren’t seeing them. Maybe we are the first or what may be more terrifying is we may be the last.
I think that the views of Nick Bostrom, Ray Kurzweil and Jared Diamond are more persuasive; That simple life is widespread throughout the galaxy, but that intelligent life (with the motor skills to create technology) is vanishingly rare and that we just might be the only technological civilization in the Milky Way- or perhaps the only one that has not yet destroyed itself

I think that once a civilisation is sufficiently advanced, they wont be interested in physical resources at all, only in knowledge. And the laws of physics being the same all over the observable universe, there is just no point in traveling, it will just be more of the same stuff that they already have at home. Also, if very long distance communication is possible at all, surely it will have to involve something else than radio waves.
Specifically thirst for knowledge would push them to explore the universe. The laws of physics might be the same, but using them may differ greatly. We can't create gravity, for example, while others might. Also, there may be laws that we still have to discover.

1) everything that we know leads towards the fact that we can not travel faster than the speed of light. the amount of time that it would take for most of the universe to reach us is prohibitive, if not impossible
2) real wormholes seem very unlikely
3) if beings were out there, might they be so advanced that we could not discover them ?
4) if beings were out there that could travel vast distances to reach us, would they have any interest in us ? we might be so much less evolved, that we would bore them to tears

number 3 assumes that advanced beings want to hide. and number 4 talks to the idea of physical visits, not about transmissions. In the good old days of ham radio many people who did not buy a ticket to visit another nation loved to send messages essentially saying "I'm here".

People often forget that there’s no guarantee that technology will continue advancing at an exponential rate. At some point, and we don’t yet know what that may be, we, or anyone, will run up against limits that simply can’t be exceeded. If that limit is reached below the threshold that would allow the scenarios that we see put forward, then it may never happen.

The assumption that galactic colonization would happen exponentially is a pretty big assumption, since we know nothing about the process. We don't know how expensive it is for advanced civilizations or how hard it is. It is possible some stars are totally unfit for colonization, and in that case you can end up surrounded by close-by stars that are not up for colonization putting a dent in the exponential model.
Had an experience about 4 years ago and trying to find out the logic of what I saw ever since.
It was 4:30am I was walking the dogs and this light caught my eye. I was not looking up at the sky just simply walking and the thing (UFO) caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. The point is that the craft was so low in the sky, about 500 feet up. When I looked up for the first fraction of a second I thought it was a helicopter, it was coming down. The next fraction of the first second I thought it was a Jumbo Jet. I had no fear I think that because it was silent I had nothing to be frightened about. Then I saw a perfect round shiny craft. This is what was coming down on me. I watched then it stopped and moved away towards the north of me. I could no longer see it as trees were blocking my view. I cannot get it out of my head to this day. It is the worst thing to happen to anyone as I don't know how much time I have wasted looking for answers. I have this thought that these craft do not fly into our world. They come from another dimension. If you can see it but can't hear it, does it exist? If you can see it so low in the sky but don't hear a whoosh of the air being blown when it fly’s away then does it exist? I guess the craft has to come from a different dimension as it has properties that do not make sense in this world. At least I know these craft exist and suppose will take that to my grave.

What makes you think that wasn't a manmade craft? Stealth tech hides the engine exhaust and I believe noise. UAV can operate pretty darn quiet. What was it that we couldn't achieve?
The argument from the bigness of space is pretty convincing. They're not here because the whole joint is so big that no matter where they started from, it's pretty unlikely they'd end up *here*.
The big problem with all these arguments, though, is what makes anybody think they're not here?
At Los Alamos, when this Fermi version of it came up, the ready answer was "It's the Hungarians." I.e. of course they're here.

When did we venture into space ? 60 years ago. When did we start sending radio signals ? 150 years ago. When did we start to even fly ? 1903.....we're not that advanced and have barely a century of worthwhile technology to show for it. We can't even get man to Mars yet -yet alone have the slightest clue how to travel through space safely for any amount of time. Does the word "Arrogant" mean anything to anyone ? If we can't talk to Dolphins, how can we hope to chat to ET ?

While it's true that an alien civilization wouldn't necessarily have the same motivations we have at some point we do have to try to make some good educated guesses.
One thing we know from the study of the evolution of life on our planet is that a self preservation instinct is a good thing to have. Imagine a species that doesn't care if it lives or dies. Does it seem likely that such a species would last long enough to develope a technologically advanced civilization? I would think such a species would go extinct long before they even develop language.
So if we assume that any technologically advanced civilization out there would have a self preservation instinct and we can also assume that a technologically advanced civilization would also be aware that all stars have finite life spans then we can also assume they would realize that colonizing other worlds is necessary if they want their species to outlive their own sun.
I'm with you, lets say we come to be a human species that is able to view progress of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of developing species. I think one criteria for making contact with others would be to wait until they progressed into a species that at least took the step to colonize some of their extended solar system thereby displaying they were likely to be in the game for longer than the next space rock or nuclear war ended them. Why waste all the work we put into the welcome wagon packet on a bunch of losers.

The aliens have been, and left. They didn't like the joint! What kind of intergalactic tourist attraction amidst the marvels of the universe is a polluted planet with inhabitants who can't get along with each other. If anything, the aliens have quarantined earth just in case what we have is catching.

@@ononofilebafisi9031 the best you can do to solve this is to alert as many people as possible, and the authorities. They have the resources to investigate... if they aren't the ones causing it for military or espionage purposes lol.
I suspect it's a whole lot harder to travel through interstellar space than sci-fi authors have given us to believe. It may well be that there simply are no extraterrestrial intelligences out there at all.
If we assume that we are the first life to reach this level of technological advancement then there is nothing to be confused about, we're simply alone - for now. Most planets and moons are extremely hostile to any sort of life, so the set of planets and moons that could host life is actually very tiny. It's not a number in the 100s of billions or trillions at all. And of those that could host life, few have evolved multicellular life. There's so many ways to make a life form but so few ways to make an intelligent one. And this is why we are probably the first of our kind.

an argument i have against the "stay at home" idea is that its ethically questionable. its like living in a 1st world country and not helping the rest of the world. if a civilization reaches a point where they have such advancement, they would know we're over here destroying the environment, committing genocides, etc. an additional supposition is that they'd likely be ethical to have cooperated to reach their advancement. and like 1st world countries, would visit and help us.

They are already here in our deepest oceans,they have been witnessed going into and out of the ocean.
Who's out there among the billions of planets? We are. What's on the "other" side of a black hole? We are. We are them. We are the alien. I think it's neat, don't you?
Opinion : We don't loose much by continuing our search. But at the rate we are advancing in all areas , theoretical and technologically, we should discover the answer within .....how long? ........maybe next 100 years. Until then Fermi's paradox is intriguing.

As far as I know radio transmissions become so faint after a few light years they are practically undetectable, unless the source is an event of colosal magnitude.

I agree......SETI amounts to a disinformation project. Myself and some co-workers had a very close-up encounter with a large craft, in 1994. If this old man, sitting in my den in Michigan, knows we're being visited so does the Untied States government. I have wondered, at times, if aliens have threatened governments not to release this info......who knows...???
If they are here they would have had to figure out how to travel more than 10 times the speed of light which I think is impossible no matter how highly advanced they are.

Guy Merritt Obviously I don’t know that as a fact it’s just my opinion.. Einstein.
It makes sense what they are saying, that advanced ET civilizations haven't colonized other planets because they are wise enough to know that such colonization by a replicating species is ultimately bad for that species by destroying the diversity or potential diversity that exists on other planets, and maybe all such advanced civilizations coordinate with each other and have agreed to bound by some kind of "prime directive" that prohibits making contact with less advanced civilizations like those on Earth.
The prime directive is complete silliness.
Other more advanced civilizations would not waste time with us. To them, we would be a bleak reminder of a not-so-similar past. If one wanted to visit or learn from our planet, they would do it without anybody knowing or do so from a distance as to either avoid disruption or to avoid potential contamination. And if a civilization were advanced enough to find us in the first place, it could also be capable of traversing reality as we know it through the likes of interdimensional travel and may have transcended long ago.
We may also be one of many civilizations that are on a similar time scale with whom are also premature in space exploration.

I’ve been researching this for 7 years ever since my first sighting and I had all the pieces to the puzzle but was lacking the big picture. Now that I’ve read this info I finally have it. It would be in your interest to take this information seriously or face the alternative. And the alternative is unthinkable.
I wouldn't even bother to search for extraterrestrial life. More importantly, I would concentrate on reducing suffering on our own planet. Technology is likely to continue to advance and some kind of super AI will make a decision to search or not, or even whether humans are relevant.

The key is always to keep an open mind, to not shove your belief into view as the only view. The truth is we have absolutely no idea what's going on out there. And again people always forget how vast space time is. Average human life of 70 years....earths age - 70 billions years. First human civilizations around 5-10,000 years ago, that leaves a whole lot of time with out us knowing a thing.

I think an actual intelligent species simply has different ideas about what is important and what is not from our ideas. They might be focused on supporting every living being, sharing wealth, healthcare, making education free, perhaps evolving systems in which financial concerns are not considered of prime importance. They might not even have such a thing as finance.

I mean, it is unbelievable, even though it’s true. There is no footage of ufos of aliens that you could show someone to make them believe. Just how it is.

It wouldn't be the first time that humans have overestimated their intelligence. I am sure that far more advanced life will have ways of communicating and/or existing that we cannot conceive of yet. I don't think we are that rare. We don't even know a lot about what happens at the bottom of our own oceans or if other forms of existence are possible in seemingly uninhabitable places. It is exciting to think about.

Subtract yourself and your prejudices and your species from the picture, then reconsider the question.
From the thumbnail I thought this was going to be David Icke. I was relieved to find that was not the case, but also slightly disappointed to.
How strong should an (original) extra galactic signal be for us to to be able to detect it? That is a key question that we may not even know the answer yet. I certainly don't but don't expect to ever know (even though I would like to know). And even if we do know, how is anyone going to find out? Asking SETI would probably be the dest way. Maybe I could arrange an interview with a SETI person. It's an important question (even if we don't have the answer) cos it seems that if intelligent life is out there why isn't there any signals? Why aren't there a lot of alien like signals? Maybe it's cos the signal strength that we have is NOT detectable from other galaxies. And maybe the alien signals aren't strong enough for us to detect them. And maybe there is not signal producing aliens in every galaxy (and maybe only one in our's). That is one explanation we don't get signals form aliens in our galaxy. The second thing goes back to my original question. I suppose it depends on how strong the original signal is. Even one single galaxy is huge. If Pluto's ORBIT was scaled down to 1 mm, our galaxy would be 100 km diam (on the same scale).
If there were civilizations like the Inca's or Roman Empire on a nearby planet, they would never know we were trying to communicate with them. Many high level civilizations never were able to develop technology. Our own civilization didn't develop it until the last few hundred years.

There are a lot of variables in the Drake equation which are unknown. Recent observations regarding exoplanets indicate that most stars have planets. The next step is to do spectroscopic analysis of exoplanets to seek evidence of biospheres.
Then we scan these planets more intensely for communication signals and send probes. In all likelihood, primitive life akin to bacteria is common, life akin to early multicellular organisms uncommon and advanced technological civilisations extremely rare.

I live in a small town. I like small towns. Yea, I'm dull. I like our Sol system - it's small, and dull, and not much excitement I'll admit. But when a freeway off ramp gets built in a small town, the small town grows big - and the surrounding land suffers.

It could be we are completely alone in our galaxy. Life if it exists on other worlds may only be microscopic bacteria. Intelligence could be so rare that we could be the first in the universe. Imagine the notion that we are the only life that can behold the enormity of the cosmos. Food for thought.

It does seem absurd until you realise how quickly the big numbers reduce when the constraint filters are applied because they're big numbers too. Life evolving is one thing. Intelligent life is a big leap from that, and intelligent life that can traverse the galaxy is a few more big leaps. We may be the only intelligent life we ever discover, the others simply too distant to ever enable observation or communication.
All life in our planet is intelligent. It’s not a big leap, simply because that leap doesn’t exist. The only big leap is life evolving.
@@dplouro dolphins are intelligent, but they cannot build spacecraft. Or you could have a plant that does produce intelligent life capable of some technology, but never enough to leave the surface of their planet. Not enough mineable ores is one possibility. Even we wouldn't be here except for an asteroid impact 65 million years ago. Those big numbers get small quickly; it's exponential growth in reverse.
It could be that human type life is so common not only throughout the milky way, but throughout the entire universe that we are nothing special. Like grass on Earth. You could travel down the highway and see grass everywhere but why would you stop to examine one particular patch?
Interesting but still speculation upon speculation. It is difficult to think like an alien, who may or may not have totally different motivation for colonising the Universe.
I think the Star Trek idea of the prime directive is actually the one that makes most sense. And why do we assume they would use radio for comunication? It's to slow. Maybe they use a quantum entanglement device or something. Or even telepathy.
Transmissions could be revealing something alien civilizations don't like or not what looking for.
