Navajo Teachings: Do This For A Peaceful Life

  • There is no word for “sorry”.
Among our Diné there is a code of conduct. A code or philosophy that requires one to be kind and forgiving as well as charitable.
Jijooba'á and Hijooba'á These two words sound very similar. One means to forgive and let go of any ill will. The other means to give freely when others are seeking your help.
Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches the difference between these two words and how they are an important part of being Navajo or Diné.

I haven’t spoken to 7 of my siblings for over 12 years now because of a perceived injustice. My ego keeps me from reaching out. I will use the words “forgive me, I love you” to begin again. That’s 7 times……a humbling practice. Wish me the best.

My siblings and I fell away after our parents passed away and the eldest son (my beloved big brother) was brutally murdered. No one will "step up" to lead the remainder. As the youngest I saw this and repeatedly tried but the resentment was absolutely stunning. Have not given up but they are a stubborn and prideful group.

I haven't talked to my sister in 3 years because the last time I saw her she was upset that my niece was moving out and hadn't told her. Once my neice left, she took her anger out on me. I refused to get angry... That is until she screamed out "I hope you die! I want you dead right now! I mean it, I want you dead!!" I got up and left and haven't spoken to her since. She lied and told others in the family she never said it. It was a horrible thing to have someone scream at you. But if she came to me and said she was sorry, I would forgive her.

@@RedRoadWoman7 I have no relationship with my mother bc she allowed her husband to abuse us and stayed with him and is still with him. She has never asked for forgiveness. I would like to speak with her before she dies but I won’t go to her. I feel like she should come to me and ask to be forgiven. Until then, I’m completely fine being away from her. I don’t hate her. I just don’t want to be hurt any more by her and her husband.

One thing my walk with God has taught me is yes forgive but also don't allow any further abuse or neglect or mis treatment. You can forgive safely from a distance and not allow that person back into your life if you have to. For a time I had to do this with my own father. He just didn't put the respect and time into our relationship that I needed and we were both adults. I forgave him but there was a time I distanced myself and my family from him and his new family because it was too toxic and painful and stressful. I didn't want my kids growing up being brushed off by their grandpa because he had better things to do...the way he had done to my sister and me our whole lives. Eventually he came back around and was asking for forgiveness. We gave it to him. He only lived for a few short months afterwards. We made restitution but by then it was too late. He wasted so much time we could have spent together but that's OK because I am grateful for the time we did have and the conversations that were hard that needed to happen in order for me to forgive. It helped me heal. Anyway that's my story the short version just sharing in case anyone is going through something and reading this helps.

Very true, i think ppl are getting confused now thinking "Oh i have to forgive this person for my own good and i have to still allow them in my life even tho they are very abusive. You should forgive but if they stole money and you can get it back legally you def should and don't be around them anymore at least not until they have done a lot of work to change and HAVE changed for good!!! And most times they won't change so protect urself from the narcissist.

People changed based on their environment and the process of elimination called evolution. If you’re a believer in the Bible and have read it, the descriptions of men does not match white people. White people are not indigenous to the Middle East. I noticed that replacement going on. And some travel site trying to combine European and the Middle East as one. That is why the European Jews kept getting skin cancer when first given Israel. The fact that you used “black supremacy” as though it hold any power to make any change or dominance also says a lot about you as a person. There is also such a thing called scientific evidence-you should lead with that. It’s not hidden and the Israeli scientists have also added to it. Peace to all whom may read this message:
May God the Father, Jesus Christ and the holy Spirit wrap there loving arms around you and keep you safe. May our Lord Jesus give you the strength you need to endure, Our Lord Jesus knows how tough things are for you, and everyone,. Don't give up! Give your life to Christ ♥️ Jesus while there is still time, Jesus Love's you more than you know!
      Do the following:
      Repent, (several times daily)
      Keep the Commandments
      Read your Bible daily,
Charity ( give to the poor)
Outwardly confess the Lord Jesus Christ as your lord and savior!
Build a real relationship with him!
Say this prayer to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior....
      Dear Father,
I now believe that Jesus Christ is Your only begotten Son, that He came down to our earth in the flesh and died on the cross to take away all of my sins and the sins of this world. I believe that Jesus Christ then rose from the dead on the third day to give all of us eternal life.
      Lord Jesus,
I now confess to You all of the wrong and sinful things that I have EVER done in my life (Past/Present/Future) Lord Jesus, I ask that You please forgive me and wash away all of my sins by the blood that You have personally shed for me on the cross. Also Lord HELP ME TO FORGIVE MYSELF, and others, I am now ready to accept You as my personal Lord and Savior. I now ask that You come into my life and live with me for all of eternity.
      Romans 10-9:
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Father, Jesus - I now believe that I am truly saved and born again.
      Thank You Father.
      Thank You Jesus.
      Thank You Holy Spirit
      Amen, Amen & Amen!

You have said a mouthful. Good common sense values are being traded for a politically correct, New World Order. Kids shall not pray in school; however we can sit around talk about magic, witchcraft and remove the Ten Commandments from The Courthouse lawns while statues of Baphomet go up nearby. The further we get from our creator, the closer we get to a cesspool. The real world is trading monetary for the spiritual. As a veteran, when they try to remove The Constitution that’s when Betsy comes out from my closet. Gods blessings to all!

I, after several decades on this earth, have seen how good it is to forgive those who show understanding that they have done wrong. As the wise Navajo gentleman says, it is even a duty!
But openly forgiving those who do not admit that they are wrong is a grave mistake.
In that case, forgiving would justify the wrong action. It would be like saying, "Go ahead! You can do it, there is nothing wrong with it!". This is, I believe, a common mistake. And a very serious one!
Parents often do this with their children, but it is right to do this because (and until) the child cannot understand. But as soon as the child is able to understand, you should also do it with the child. With a lot of love and kindness, so that you can be sure that the child understands very well. It has to be done to prevent the child from growing up spoiled.
In the explanation of the wise man in the video, it seems clear to me that if he does not consider the possibility of someone not acknowledging his mistake, it is because in his society it is expected that those who do wrong understand it and wish to change their behaviour.
Unfortunately, in my society, I have too often met people who are convinced that taking advantage of their neighbour's patience and kindness or their ignorance is even a kind of talent.
In those cases I understand that perhaps I am looking at a spoiled child in an adult body and I feel sorry for him/her and his parents who perhaps spoiled him so that he would adore them and/or for fear that he would leave them alone when they grow old.
I feel sorry for him/her because I understand that that person will probably never be capable of a psychologically healthy and happy life. But this does not mean that I justify his wrongdoing.

Learn to mend situations among family members. Because what my oldest is going thru is heartbreaking to see. All families must love each other thru good times and bad. I can forgive what has been done to me personally by another, I forgive easily in general, but I don't feel it is my place to forgive those who have hurt others or continue to hurt. I can understand that people do things out of ignorance, and that most people believe they are doing the right thing even if it hurts others, and that understanding brings peace, but I can only offer forgiveness if they seek it, if they mean to change. I won't let them continue to harm me or others, but I feel it is limiting to their own spiritual growth to forgive them before they realize themselves what they have done wrong. I know this video hasn't suggested this, these are just my own thoughts on the matter, I hope I explained this clearly.
