When I was a kid, we used to play in this river near my village and whenever we get hungry we just go where there’s a lot of lilies, turn them over and look for shrimp. We’d find a lot and sometimes we bring our own soy or vinegar to dip. Lol

They have a very basic nervous system. I doubt they are really capable of feeling pain in any way that is meaningful to humans. As compared to something like crabs, which show awareness and grooming of injured limbs. It does seem silly not to kill the shrimp first, but whatever. I stick live fish on a hook to catch other fish, so I can't really say much.
