VW and Audi have the purple slide clips that must be pulled first before applying the tension on the retainer clip. I hope that helps.

@@portugeepride You mean pushed. With this one, it was still quite hard to get the clip to move even so but I kept at it and eventually it did.

Anyone recommend a particular tool for getting out the top bolt? None of mine fit quite right and if I'm going to spend, may as well get the right one.
By the way, in case anybody misses it like I did, the top bolt comes from behind. I finally got my hand snaked round the front and was wondering why I seemed to only be feeling a stud with no nut.

I was able to get to it with the use of a lift. But not easy

@@portugeepride I can get to it fine. I just can't get enough swing on it with any of the tools I have. Unfortunately, many wrench sets skip 16 and my ratchet head is too big. I plan to pick up a 16mm ratcheting wrench tomorrow (Husky at HD) and may grab a 1/4" socket set if that doesn't work.

@@portugeepride I bought a husky 16mm ratchet wrench from Home depot and it worked fine. Only got 2-3 clicks on each move so it took a little while but far from the worst starter I've done this year. I have a ratchet (Stanley brand) that can be advanced by turning the handle and that would have been great but the head was too big. I might see if they have it in 1/4 but job is done anyway.

I do believe the part changed in 2005. You can verify with your local parts store.

Possibly. Check the fuses or relay associated. Ensure to disconnect the battery prior to working on any electrical

I'm sorry I couldn't help you out. This video was from a few years ago and I remember saying, " I can only imagine how hard this would be to replace without a lift." That starter was very hard to remove. You have to feel for the top bolt. Its very hidden. Good luck

@@portugeepride It was not that hard without a lift. I did have to get the side good and high though.
