man i've been mixing and mastering my own tracks from a home setup for something like 10 years and this is the first time RMS actually clicked for me. definitely got a sub from me ahaha
I would like to add my two cents. This is all true and great. It might leave true beginners with a wrong impression though. Video 2 of this series goes into this though so go watch it! High RMS at all costs is not strictly how perceived loudness is increased. Some dynamic range is necessary because otherwise everything will sound extremely "squashed" and lacking "punch" which is antagonistic to perceived loudness as well. The best additional way to increase perceived loudness is through EQ. Cut out unnecessary mud from the lows. Shave off energy from an instrument to increase the energy of a competing instrument. SIDECHAIN. Add some saturation to instruments that need to break through. Use the entire frequency spectrum in a precise manner to truly unlock high perceived loudness.
1:57 My brain is wired to find loud better when it has to be and worse when it's loud but it should be quiet. Dynamic range lets music breath, let it breath!
Thank you soo much 👏👏👏... I've known the term rms for years but I always underestimated the power it has in the final product of my song. Now that I know, I'll utilize it as much as I can
Once you've really started understanding the video's content, then check out LUFS. It's a measure similar to RMS but also accounts for the brightness of a sound. Once you've got that, you've pretty much there!
Thank you for explaining this in a straightforward and unconvoluted manner, too many other tutorials overcomplicate this subject and it's unnecessary. Great tutorials!
This is very good, and takes a sightly different approach than other instructional videos on the subject. First, you're 100% correct: understand a little about mastering as early as possible. Second, though, it's a slight secret that most producers keep a minimal, default mastering chain on their master channel as they are producing. It can be as minimal as a limiter, but there's no reason to not do this if you're producing electronic music. It will let you know that you're doing reasonable things from the get-go.
Totally agree with keeping a limiter on the master and then checking that you're barely using it. That's a good working level if you ask me 😁 gives you confidence you are gain staging wisely.
Right! Even you're starting, it's very helpful to hear how things work together and also to hear your music at similar loudness to finished tracks. Nothing, at least to me, was as demoralizing as hearing my music so terribly soft compared to released tracks! ☺️
I should add one more thing: peak to RMS is not dynamic range; it's called crest factor. It's subtle and maybe not worth worrying about, but if we're going to be professionals, we should learn the terms of our art. At least I think so (but I'm a professional nerd...).
As I've been ice skating uphill learning these things, I love discovering things like THIS! You, sir, have earned my respect, like and sub. Now I'm off to do some more backwards downhill skating. Oh wait!
This whole series of videos are well explained and easy to understand even to a relative novice like me. Oscar seems a likeable chap and very knowledgeable too. I’m going to watch all of them. Instantly liked and subbed. Recommended.
Guillotine Mixing .. Zermelos course basically shows how you can begin producing & get the same loudness as the reference tracks contrary to the standard Gain Staging approach... Definitely should give that a shot

This is THE best and clearest explanation I've seen on this topic. You earned yourself a subscriber, keep up the good job.
Cheers Magnus! Gotta make all this stuff as straightforward as possible, its complicated enough!
I totally agree...
so why do you think the louder the better in human perception ? I still don't get it.
@@Renaxelo it's just an observation of how we really perceive things. Not a value judgement :)
He is very well spoken and cuts out all of the unnecessary crap. The best info/tutorial videos I have ever seen.

@@briancase6180 peak to trough is dynamic range, I think that's what he said also. I never heard of crest factor thank you :)
@@prettypointlessvideo nope.. Dynamic range is a property of a channel, a thing, like speakers. Dynamics is a property of music or sound. Sorry.
Very good explanation. Really, really clear presentation of the concept. Nice job.
