  • 68J is a more fun alternate to get to Gross Reservoir and the sign will tell you as much. "Things have changed!" "Not for city SUV's!" "TURN AROUND!" The trail has gotten pretty rutted out since I was there last but I welcomed the challenge in the mud and snow. Last time (and last video) I ran it backwards which was still fun but this is definitely the better way to go. The trail starts in a tiny neighborhood and runs in between private land. The signage before the trail might lead you to believe you're on the wrong track but stick to the coordinates and you'll be fine. It seems they were just really tired of endless traffic going up, turning around, coming back through presumably at high speed or constantly blocking the trail. There are also lots of new signs because people were trail parking and creating new trails over to the lake. Stick to the trail (on foot or in vehicle) and follow the signs so they don't have to add more. Other than that, have fun on this one, the trail to Gross (Wininger I think) is still closed for the season as of this filming.

    My Tires:
    amzn.to/3h7cZ25
I love these tires. The only others I'd take are the BFG KO2 but they don't make them in this size and the KM2's are amazing. You can probably imagine the amount of driving I do weekly and how much abuse my tires get. These things last, everyone knows this, you've seen it in my videos.
    My Tire Deflators:
    amzn.to/3o5O9RT
These tire deflators have many $15 copies but the others just don't hold up or are inaccurate. I don't know what the deal is, they look identical to me too but read the reviews- they're bad. I've been using these Staun's for over a year and never had a problem, I air down a lot. Set them at the trail so your tires will be the same temp when you get to the trail next time.
    My Compressor:
    amzn.to/3epo9xB
There are better ones but I'd just get a bigger VIAIR, not something different. Airs up all my 33's from 14psi to 37psi in less than 10 minutes.
    My Microphone:
    amzn.to/33iLw5w
My microphone is the worst good mic you can get. BUT don't be fooled, it's a very good mic. Picture me getting in my car for the 50th time after I just ran up and down a hill... for the 50th time. Do you see me disconnecting my mic and gingerly setting it in a case? No. It stays connected to the tripod, gets thrown into my plastic cargo area and bounces around with other heavy items until the next one. It gets terrible interference from WiFi so you must make sure that it's off on your camera or phone. If you are trying to use this with your phone you need to get a TRS to TRRS cable which RODE makes. This is required because your phone will think the mic is headphones.
    My Tripod:
    amzn.to/3erbA4G
I went through 2 tripods in 1 month, a $20 and a $30. Buy it nice or buy it thrice. This thing gets opened and closed MANY times per week in rain, snow, dirt, and even in the middle of rivers. I love the 2-stage legs so i can make it real low in 2sec instead of shortening all the legs.
    My Drone:
    amzn.to/3epqIQ9
You can tell how easy it was to progress through my videos. Besides maybe five times, you've seen every bit of flying since I got it. I don't fly in the city and I don't go to the mountains and not make a video. It is VERY easy to use.
    My Drone ND Filters:
    amzn.to/3bq7RTh
The filters are a must. Again I have the worst ones and I am still very pleased. My first use was video #35 and I think it is very apparent. Illinois Gulch (#34 obviously) has a completely white sky, way too much blue. I'm still not even good about selecting the right one or changing them out but it's 10x better than nothing.

i'm going to pin this because i'd like others to weigh in as i've asked myself questions pertaining to this many times in the last 3.5yrs. it also comes just as my dislike-every-b-roll-video hater has shown up and the only comment they liked was yours.
the channel started because i was going camping every weekend and each time i'd pick a trail and head to UA-cam to watch videos on it. i wanted something stripped down, no families, no cooking, no anything. just the trail and it's obstacles, if something is scenic get that too. let them breathe, show it, this isn't an action movie, it's you trying to decide if you're going to make it and if you're gonna like it there. it's intended to be a searchable library for people already researching where they're trying to go.
now- obviously i realize people are subscribing and maybe haven't heard of 68J and might go there now but is that bad? if they were going from Denver to the mountains to camp that weekend anyway, does it really matter where they go? are more known trails better to spread people out? is someone who's planning to go to 68J in 2wks gonna see my La Salle Pass video next week and go there instead leaving a hypothetical spot left on 68J? how did THEY hear about 68J in the first place?
i don't know, like i said i go back and forth on every single part of B Roll from changing the outro again to getting a new drone to just quitting entirely. this is a big one, obviously the Stop Geotagging movement is real and certain fragile areas absolutely need to be protected. i definitely try to do my part, got a whole grocery bag of cans and plastic bottles on La Salle last weekend along with some larger car plastics that wouldn't fit. i wanna do right by everyone, the channel is a tool but i'm not going to tell someone they're using it incorrectly. what does everyone think?

@@BRollOffroad I much appreciate the level of effort you put into producing your videos, it is one of many sources I look at not just for discovery of new trails but also determine their difficulty to be best prepared and to not get over my head riding (or driving) too far above my skill level - or over what my stock vehicle is capable of.

@@BRollOffroad I think you know, but I was just trying to give you a hard time, and I appreciate your response. And I love your videos.
As a newer Colorado resident I have also scoured the internet to learn about the trails and thats how I found your videos. I love your no bs format. I appreciate the work you put into these, and I love it when I find a video of a place I've been.
With regards to the geotag cancel movement, I don't see how it could apply to your videos. And I don't think that it should. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of trails in Colorado and I dont see harm in making videos about them. I think the problem isn't use, it's abuse. It is people being irresponsible and not taking care of our shared natural resources.
So to wrap this up, keep making your videos as long you want too. I and many others appreciate them. I will always do my part and pack out more than I pack in.
And with regards to 68J there is some weird mystique about it in the CO motorcycle groups. It's one of my favorite spots and I will always recommend it to others in the area.

I dont even live in Colorado. I just like the clean simple vids you make. I appreciate that you drive a relatively stock Xterra like me and you go and get out and explore. Unlike the 500000 other offroad youtube channels where the people start off basic and then 20k in mods later, make it seem like you have to spend a ton of money to get out and explore our public lands. You do it the way it should be and I appreciate that. If you are ever out in AZ hit me up and I will show you around! Keep the vids and content coming!

    Three questions.
    1. Specs on the Xterra, anything besides tires? Lift?
    2. I imagine it takes you like 2x longer to get through a trail since you have to stop and set up cams to film.
    3. Are you flying the drone while driving? Because that’s awesome if so! Lol.

    • @BRollOffroad

      2. 2-x3x
      3. i am! i got the drone just for this so it's how i've been doing it the whole time, like i never practice anywhere else so it's not that weird because it's just always been this way haha.

we got a couple noises worked out since this video but the general creaking longer ones are probably the bushings in the ends of the leaf packs. they get a lot of stress, weight and pressure and are spinning on bolts through the shackles. depending there’s a lot of side load, maybe some

The work and care that goes into your videos... stunning. Also, you have a very good eye for shots. The only thing: the music (if we can call it that). Would it be too much to ask for you to use music played by humans? Actual instruments, with strings plucked and horns blown into. There is something so artificial about computerized, quantized music and, above all, so at odds with your very organic videos. Anyway, thanks for your remarkable work. we're closed Sunday/Monday so i try to go Monday for this very reason.
i also wait around a lot sometimes, if people are at an arch or something i'll start editing and just wait them out. i also feel weird filming around people so i'll skip stuff sometimes as long as it's not a crucial obstacle or anything. sometimes it kills the filmer in me to see someone camped on a hill with a perfect drone shot on the other end but good for them, i'll find another.
Hurrah Pass is probably my best work at hiding vehicles haha, the trail was absolutely packed. endless groups of 10 Jeeps, 15 SXS's, dirtbikes everywhere. there were about 50 people at the top when i got there and a little less when i got the final drone shot, they're there but i fast forward through them and crop some others. then the very last Easter Egg clip has people on both sides framed out and i had to wait for 1 guy to get his photo in the background. these videos have nothing to do with the actual day i had haha.
