  • No One Paid Attention To This Dirty Dancing Scene
No one paid attention to this dirty dancing scene. Today we look at the overlooked and somewhat grimy dance scene in the movie "Dirty Dancing" that has become legendary over the past three decades. This dance romance picture, which was released on August 21st, 1987, has managed to retain its status as one of the most cherished films in history. It's quite astounding to think that even the actors themselves couldn't have foreseen the immense cultural impact it would have. Join us as we delve into the nasty behind-the-scenes details of dirty dancing.

“Dirty Dancing” is indicative of the sensual intimate dancing in the movie. Calling it nasty, gives a whole different negative connotation. It’s not appropriate for this movie.

This film will always hold a special place in my heart for a number of reasons, but the main one is that my now-deceased wife loved this film so much. The night we went to see it, it was a new release, and since we had seen everything else at the time, I somewhat reluctantly agreed to go, and I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. My wife went crazy over it, and two days later when I got home from work, she had gone out and bought the soundtrack album and it was playing when I walked in; I still have that album, along with another one she bought a little later titled, "More Dirty Dancing!"
She died 10 years ago, and every time I see anything about this film, I'll read or watch whatever it is, and this video was no different.
Rest in peace, Madeline....'til I get there! 😊

I hope that this girl I knew as an acquaintance only was lying when she said that when he was here filming To Wong Fu, that he was having an affair with her. i don't know why she'd lie about it, really, because it didn't make her look so good sleeping with a married man and being basically a groupie, plus she said he told her she better not tell anyone, or it would not go well for her, whatever that means. I don't know if this is true, but she was a very beautiful lady, so I can believe any man would have been interested. Clearly it wasn't a love connection, but I've always wondered about this. Hopefully she made it up for no good reason. I love this movie, and I'm maybe going to watch it tonight after seeing this video.

I think the movie captured a true coming of age dilemma. The innocence of someone who had never been exposed to the lifestyle of the dancer's and the disdain and of those same folks to someone who didn't share their lifestyle. The attraction of two people who were worlds apart and obviously, even to the star crossed lovers, was doomed.

This video states that abortion was LEGAL in the United States during the early 1960s when Dirty Dancing is set. However, abortion was actually ILLEGAL in the US at that time; it didn’t become legal until the passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973. In fact, this is why Penny gets sick after having her abortion in the film - because she had an ILLEGAL “back alley” abortion from someone whom she shouldn’t have trusted to do such an important procedure. Had Baby’s father not been willing to treat her - and had Baby not been willing to go to her father in the first place once she realized Penny was becoming septic from the infection caused by her abortion, Penny probably would have died, and she almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to have children in the future if she’d survived without getting proper treatment she received from Baby’s father. Penny’s abortion is such an important plot element in Dirty Dancing (it’s the whole reason why Baby was learning to dance with Johnny!) that I’m really shocked that this video seems to have made this mistake.

@@MrJest2 Sorry, but no - that’s the whole reason why Penny got so sick after having her *illegal, back alley* abortion, i.e., it was a botched abortion which resulted in a very serious infection. Had Baby not realized this fact and run to bring her doctor father to treat Penny in her room after the botched abortion, Penny most likely would have died - and she almost certainly would have become infertile if she *had* managed to survive without treatment (as Dr. Houseman explains after treating her and saving her ability to have children in the future).

@hello-vs4dc You are correct. As someone who has actually watched the film, it was a botched, illegal abor---- in 1963 in the Catskills. Ab--tion became mostly legal in NY in 1970. Dirty Dancing has always had a special place in my heart and always will. I was 13 when the movie came out and my friends loved it so much. We bought the epic soundtrack and played it on repeat. We'd then recite lines and songs, especially the scene they did to "Love is Strange". I've watched the movie so many times and admittedly, the scene in Johnny's cabin was to me and my 13 yr old self, THE most sensual and erotic thing I've ever seen. Weirdly enough, I still think it is. 'Til this day, my favorite quote in the movie is "Most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life, the way I feel when I'm with you" aggkk! It gets me every time lol Even now, every time I hear "She's like the Wind", I get emotional as it zips me back in time to days where It was just me and my friends and not having a care in the world. We loved this movie so much and you can say it was a sorta of coming of age film for us. Nonetheless, It reminds me of a time of innocence and love and just having a good time. It was blistering hot when they filmed Dirty Dancing. The resort they filmed it at had closed for the summer and there was no air conditioning. It was shut off. They had electricity, water, bathrooms. It was so hot that they did almost all the filming early in the morning or at night when it was cooler. It helped a little, but not much. The part of the movie where he and baby were practicing and she kept laughing and messing up were outtakes. They were not acting. Patrick who was a patient man, was really having his patience tested because of Jennifer's messing up. It took 25 takes before they finally got through the scene. They were all hot, tired and wanted to get the scene shot, so they could all go back to their hotel which was twenty minutes away and where they did have air conditioning!!! When Jennifer danced with him the first time, after helping with the watermelons, you'll notice beer bottles all over the place. They were filled with water so they could grab some water whenever they needed to. The woman who played Penny was loosing weight because of the heat. She was not trying to loose weight. She was sweating it off because of the heat. She was drinking huge milkshakes to keep any more weight from falling off. As for the scenes in the water. It wasn't the weather that was the problem. It was the water!! It was ice cold. It was so cold that it froze Patrick's muscles up and lifting Jennifer up was almost impossible. You can hear him grunting as he's lifting Jennifer out of the water. That's why his arms are shaking. Freezing muscles don't work very well. The water was so cold because it was really deep. There was a platform under the water that they stood on. Whenever she flew off into the water, he had to swim out to her, grab her and pull her back and then he had to grope around in the water to find the platform and get them both back on it. When they finally got out of the water they had to wrap them up in layers of towels to get them warm. As far as Patrick's knees were concerned, there was no injury. Basically his knees were gone. One knee had a little cartilage left and the other had none at all. His knees were bone on bone. How did they get that way?? He went to a dance school in New York City called Harkness. His mom told him what would happen at that school and begged him not to go. But he went anyway. Mom was right. They danced for hours every day. The knees take the worst of the beating for dancers. Knees aren't designed to be pounded like that and it cost him his knees. They were only allowed to eat four or five bites of turkey and a few leafs of lettuce everyday. They could drink coffee, tea, water and all the diet drinks they wanted to and nothing else. They were weighed every day and day after day they told them to more weight. It was not unusual for a dance student to pass out when they were dancing. They finally shut the school down when a student literally dropped dead when they were dancing. When they shot the last scene, Patrick told them they had to get the scene shot the first time, because he couldn't do it a second time. The pain was just too much. Thankfully they did. As far as Jennifer not practicing the lift with Patrick. That's an out right lie. They practiced it. To not practice a lift like that ever and do it cold without ever doing it would be out right stupidity. Somebody is going to get hurt.
