  • I had stopped shooting this wonderful quartet during their show at the Met Main Stage in Bury, England, but started the camcorder rolling again when they started this one. What a great song, and I've edited in the words so that you can even sing along!
All you carolers out there-- this one should freshen up the repertoire.
Sydney Carter's song reminds us of what is important, during the Holiday and every day afterward.

I'll never tire of this version of Sydney Carter's anthem for freedom and equality. Great musicianship from the band. Love and peace.

Inspiring. Goose bumps. I only discovered the huge talent of Nancy Kerr, as well as the Melrose Quartet, this summer at the Warwick Folk Festival. I was enchanted by her and James Fagan. Long live this great song!

Last night, on a lovely evening in a park in Minneapolis, a group of pub singers got together for our first in-person singing session in 16 months, with the CoVID pandemic finally ebbing in Minnesota, and I was lucky enough to be chosen to lead a song. This is the one I chose.

This recording may well become the definitive version of Sidney Carter's anthem of freedom. John Ball was a revolutionary of his time in the 15th century, daring to imagine that men and women could be of equal status. There is still a long way to go, but John Ball was one of the pioneers of women's liberation. Love and peace.

Yes indeed, a carol for our times! Thank you for sharing your thoughts, your article is absorbing and accurate. John Ball is a hero of mine, champion of equality of gender and social class. Where is his ghost? I guess it lives on in all of us trying to do something about it; let's make things better. Love and peace. Peter.

14th century! Peasants' Revolt was in 1381.
Check out Sydney Carter's other songs - not just Lord of the Dance.

'Eve is the lady. Adam is the lord.' How does this rank Ball as 'pioneer of women's liberation?' Is not 'Adam' still lord? We are tempted to read modern categories back into the Wat Tyler rebellion and Ball's role. I don't think Ball would have categorized it as abolishing privilege by blood or creating an egalitarian society. He was thinking in terms of a fulfillment of scripture as he read it, and women being treated with respect and dignity is part of the equation, but Ball was not a feminist.

I discovered this just before Christmas after watching the Melrose Quartet's version of Chariots, and I can't stop playing it. Easily the best version of this beautiful song, and a great anthem for Christmas and the New Year, especially in these troubled times. Thanks so much for keeping the camcorder rolling! Great photography as well - a much more intimate view of the band which enhances the song. Thanks also for the lyrics. Perfection all round.

Wonderful song! A lot of people in my area think it's a Christmas song, maybe because of "carol like a lark" and the Biblical references. It's a great song for any time but it's really a June song.

I think I did pretty well for one hand-held consumer grade camcorder, so I won't let you shoot me for that. But you can shoot me for not spelling labour like a Brit. I've certainly read enough English literature to know the difference. But as long as we are getting pedantic, perhaps you have noticed my photo and my name? I am hardly a Mike.

Utterly brilliant song very well played. How did I miss this one in the sixties and why have I not heard of The Melrose Quartet? Heard another classic for the first time today: Hail Smiling Morn.

Yes, John Ball died a hero. Thank you for reminding us, Sherlock. Now, Mojo, see if you can figure out the point of this song for us.

"Mojo?" "us?" Rather a cryptic comment. 8 years ago, you rather liked the video, now I am not sure what the heck you are getting at.

@@MichalShapiro1949 I love the video, the performance, the song, the meaning of the song. Somebody named Mojo Mojo said John Ball is dead dude. So my comment refers to his comment which I think is ridiculous. So I am being facetious when I call him Sherlock but I do call him by his name and ask him to help us figure out the meaning of the song. And I'm facetious in asking that. Maybe I should have just replied to him and said, no kidding, Sherlock. Way to miss the point of the song. Sorry for the confusion. The Melrose quartet absolutely rocked that great song! I listen to it a lot. I am grateful that you posted the video.

Ahhh. OK I understand. On my computer your remark to Mojo did not appear as a reply, but as a stand-alone comment. I am relieved 🙂.

I really think this is a good song with a nice message but at the same time I don't think people should forget that John Ball and his associates were murderous lunatics who were motivated almost entirely by hatred of people higher on the social pecking order than them.

    • @MichalShapiro1949
      @MichalShapiro1949  2 місяці тому

Yes, that is true! There is little I can say to deny it, but only to unravel it a bit...the times were harsh, and the line between the haves and have-nots was often the difference between eating and not eating. The government was an absolute monarchy, the caste system was rigid, and how much actual justice was there to be had? The human hind brain is competitive, and for some the notion that one person would think they are "better" than another is intolerable. It's NO excuse for murder, but then again, strangling, drawing and quartering seems extreme in our time, no? To re-iterate, historically Mr. Ball and his followers were no angels! But the song is terrific and I give kudos to Mr. Carton for extracting the best part of Ball's message.
