Regarding the look-up mode on the APG-66: I'm not up to speed on how this is implemented in-game, but in reality what this should be is just a low PRF mode with no clutter filtering (AKA "pulse"), so basically the exact same thing as the older non-doppler sets. The APG-66's medium PRF mode allowed all-aspect look-down performance but it suffered quite heavily in terms of detection range due to inherent limitations of MPRF search, which is why an "Uplook" mode was included to allow (somewhat) better performance at the cost of no (EDIT: mainlobe) clutter rejection.

I kinda figured it out on my own but it took a ton of matches to figure out why my radar was suddenly losing lock as I got close to the target in the Mig-29. Now I've started using PD TWS HDN to lock onto targets and then switch to standard PD mode when they get within 10km, works well enough despite the R27ER having a mind of its own sometimes. For cold or notching targets its better to use the standard PD modes.

@Tims Variety it makes sense to be in the ACM modes, as it would be redundant for the main radar functions given the "Radar/IRST tilt control axis" function essentially allowing you to slew your radar upwards anyways, so that also confused me quite a bit given you could do the same with non look-up radars in early planes. I researched F-14 a few days ago, bought it, researched sparrows and Im completely lost. I watched Tims guide on radars which I must say is very well explained but I have problem to apply that knowledge in game, it just seems to not work? Yes, probably Im doing something wrong, but I dont know what. I have huge problems getting lock in any radar mode (PD, PDV, SRC, WTS) and if I somehow manage to do it, I cant maintain it, I lost the lock after few seconds. Anyone else having these problems? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks
The TLDR - its not you. Effectively using radar takes a lot of practice. TONS of things can cause a lock to drop, including just the way the target maneuvers.
