Yet, conveniently, they're still counted in Copenhagen's 'green' credentials. And then there are the heralded projects like CopenHill and urban gardening initiatives. While touted as groundbreaking, they're hardly novel and certainly not representative of everyday life for Copenhageners. Instead, new urban developments predominantly feature a sea of concrete and glass, with sustainability taking a backseat to profit margins. Let's not forget Lynetteholm, a stark reminder of misplaced priorities where community well-being takes a backseat to monetary gain. Copenhagen is a city with immense potential for environmental stewardship, but the current narrative of it being the greenest capital couldn't be further from the truth. Nature is so much more exciting and novel than anything I've seen in metros like LA, San Francisco or Berlin for example. Honestly theres not much nature to see in the country so you may as well go to Sweden or Norway instead. There are others parts of DK which are cool like Aarhus but realistically the main draw is Copenhagen
I live near Malmö so I get to visit Copenhagen fairly often. I absolutely love exploring Copenhagen. Never seen so many innovations that looked as modern and fun while respecting the environment the way as in this city. It is truly a city of the Future. Congrats to the Danish people!

I think it has a lot to do with less inequality in Denmark, our politicians are more in power than in the US. And it may also have to do with our election system, the parliament and city council corresponds relatively precisely to the views of the people. Next to all views are represented.
The title is a bit funny to read as a Swede. Whenever I travel over from Malmö and exit the train, the central station area absolutely reeks of diesel because the Danish trains still run on this stuff. In Sweden that's not the case. That being said, Copenhagen is still a great town to visit any day of the year! ... but environmentally friendly? The feeling I get when visiting is that the ambition is there but the reality is different.

Somewhere around 60% of denmark is agricultural land. Wild nature is almost nonexistent. We have several organizations where private citizens can donate to buy back land from farmers to save nature, because our shifting goverments utterly fail to protect nature time and time again. The danish populations consumption is such that if everyone on the planet lived like us we would need 1,7 earths to sustain it. But our politicians sure are talented at greenwashing, bullshitting and padding themselves on the back and the population, for the most, buy into it. Things could be better, they'll probably get worse, seems to be the worldwide trend these days.
As a Dane I feel proud!🎉🇩🇰 But I feel like there is a need to say, that this only looks so good because most countries don't do any climate actions at all. All of these things in the video is great, but Denmark is still behind on it's climate targets for 2030. I wish more Danes demanded more from the government in accordance to climate actions.

Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise. Ebikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. Be healthier and happier. Ride a bicycle regularly.
As a u.s. citizen, i find sad that our country is so behind times, globally. The infrastructure is crumbling. Our leaders put the money in the military industrial complex.
Sorry but am I crazy, as a tourist I just didn't see Copenhagen being even close to being green at all let alone,, greenest capital city''. Even in this documentary, everything is gray and bare concrete. One rooftop garden and garbage incinerator are just not green in my eyes. A lot of streets in the city center are like a canyon with concrete and stone. Berlin and Stockholm are much bigger cities and they are just a gazillion times greener than Copenhagen. Using bicycles everywhere is nice for the environment but if they want to have, the, greenest capital city'' they need more. Also not a huge fan of the star architect his architecture is just green in his eyes but realistically speaking he has a lot of projects that you can clearly see that maximizing profit was the main goal. While CPH is undoubtedly beautiful in many parts, the city and government have done really well marketing themselves while the actual on the ground experience of these "green cities" is far from beautiful. Lots of concrete, glass and bland buildings with very little greenery in the design
Your town hall officials would find out how to absolutely greenwash building design while also making some pretty depressing modern structures that sell at insanely high prices
I just came into Copenhagen with train from the north and thought that all the green trees, bushes, flowers on balconies and the ivy on buildings in the sunshine comprise an explosion of green all the way into the centre. Copenhagen is in no way a concrete jungle as some comments here suggest.

If you go to Bangkok or Jakarta, you can smell the river or canals from very far away. You don't need to look at it to know it's filled with trash and all sorts of rotting things. That river is very clean relatively.
I respect their way of tackling with urban issues considering future in a long time span. As a japanese architect, I got a lot inspiration from Copenhagen. We japanese need to learn from this. In Japan, even if we have potential of utlizing ocean area, unfortunately we don't have any sense like them because of lacking considering future, our government only think money and think in a short term.
Those glamorous projects like CopenHill, "green" fashion weeks, etc, are not thought out radically enough. Below those ski slopes, they are still burning garbage. They still use a giant amount of energy. Planners put a lot of thought into figuring out how to enable people to meet their demands in a more sustainable way, but the real question would be: How to undo marketing and social norms, in order to make people think sustainably on the lowest level. Something as radical as abolishing the concept of ownership or status. Instead of debating whether electric energy or hydrogen are better to fuel a "sustainable" SUV, we must figure out how to make people desire to not own or drive an SUV (or any car at all.) Else, we only have some kind of indulgence trade for a small, wealthy elite who can afford building all kinds of futuristic architecture. So, from all those "green" concepts, one of the few that is actually convincing is to make cities walkable and to reallocate public space from car to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
Copenhagen is awesome on nearly all fronts - except greenery and environmentalism. I mean the country still has Diesel trains running, intense congestion of cars and lack of green areas. While Copenhagens cultural scene is world best, get to Stockholm for a truly green capital city.
Great video, but how do poor countries afford all the green energy and gadgets and EV's? In my country where we have high unemployment, poor cant buy food, dont have good accommodation. Priorities in 3rd world countries are different to first world rich countries
as a dane i would make more money in most 3rd world country´s then i do in denmark.. everyone needs to start from somewhere, its not like i havent been hungry and not to have money for food.. and i have been living on the street with no roof over my head when i was in that situation i left denmark and came back with more.. now i make money by using the energy the sun makes, many things can convert electricity into money. and i live in denmark where there is very little sun and everything is very expensive.. my bitcoin is worth the same all over the world, its not like i use some magical danish valuta that makes me rich i would pay alot less tax and produce way more bitcoin if i was in most other countrys and i could also get electricity prices for 1/3 in most other places, so i dident have to run my miners on solar in scandinavia where we have no sun creating a job for yourself is always better then getting it from someone else.. and if a place is bad, then leave it, like many other people did to make a better life i doubt i would have had a better life if i havent left denmark, sometimes change is needed to make a difference copenhagen is one of the worse city´s i know, most people i know that was born there like me have moved away.. its to expensive and to stressful i got a house in the other end of the country now that cost 1/50 of what my old house in copenhagen costed.. and i pay 1/30 in tax for same size house
The city is absolutely stunning in the older parts but many of the modern districts are absolutely soulless and not many people visit them unless they live there or know someone that does. These structures are really ruining the soul of the city and making for some pretty depressing places in a city that has so much architectural beauty for inspiration.
Not every city in the world can achieve Copenhagen's level of sustainability however it serves as great example how to do things right and better. More green and sustainable approach shouldn't cost more than a dirty one, however that's more of a task for governments and market shifts. At least solar panels got cheaper which is mainly thx to China's cheap production costs. In order to progress green energy and solutions MUST become more attractive from all perspectives including price as dirty energy and solutions r "dirty cheap".
Referring to the architect in this video: To me the title “renowned architect” is a red flag. In Copenhagen there loads of grey modernist buildings mainly made from concrete and steel. The beautiful part of the city is the historic part like Nyhavn with its colorful traditional buildings. For a city where it’s mostly rainy, windy and grey those modernist buildings make the city quite depressing. The little green that you can only enjoy in late spring and summer do not make up for it either.
Start teaching design in the third grade? In the States that would never fly. I think it's a good idea to be different. Incineration of waste has many issues: micro toxins and plastics released into the environment. As noted in the piece we must consume less stuff. Do we own the stuff or does it own us? biggest problem of vertical farming are production costs that are way higher compare to traditional farming mainly due to higher wages for qualified workers and expensive technologies used.
If we move away from animals and instead did mostly vertical plant farming, there would be actual space for nature? Rewilding is an option, it is needed and wanted.

I’ve been to the top of Copenhill several times, and I even visited the old incineration plant as a kid before it was decommisioned. Copenhill has no smell at all compared to the old plant, and neither of the plants emitted any toxic fumes or gases, since we can afford modern and safe infrastructure. The only real points of criticism is that the plant is too big, so we had to import trash to burn, and the skiing thing is a gimmick, the waterskiing track next door gets significantly more traffic.

Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. Be healthier and happier. Ride a bicycle regularly.
As a u.s. citizen, i find sad that our country is so behind times, globally. The infrastructure is crumbling. Our leaders put the money in the military industrial complex.

Sorry but am I crazy, as a tourist I just didn't see Copenhagen being even close to being green at all let alone,, greenest capital city''. Even in this documentary, everything is gray and bare concrete. One rooftop garden and garbage incinerator are just not green in my eyes. A lot of streets in the city center are like a canyon with concrete and stone. Berlin and Stockholm are much bigger cities and they are just a gazillion times greener than Copenhagen. Using bicycles everywhere is nice for the environment but if they want to have, the, greenest capital city'' they need more. Also not a huge fan of the star architect his architecture is just green in his eyes but realistically speaking he has a lot of projects that you can clearly see that maximizing profit was the main goal. A lot of greenwashing and gimmicky stuff such as vertical farming not a lot of nature-oriented projects.
They mean green in the sense of sustainability and eco friendly, not literally green from plants

While CPH is undoubtedly beautiful in many parts, the city and government have done really well marketing themselves while the actual on the ground experience of these "green cities" is far from beautiful. Lots of concrete, glass and bland buildings with very little greenery in the design

I just came into Copenhagen with train from the north and thought that all the green trees, bushes, flowers on balconies and the ivy on buildings in the sunshine comprise an explosion of green all the way into the centre. Copenhagen is in no way a concrete jungle as some comments here suggest.

If you go to Bangkok or Jakarta, you can smell the river or canals from very far away. You don't need to look at it to know it's filled with trash and all sorts of rotting things. That river is very clean relatively.
We don't have real rivers in Denmark. In Copenhagen we have lakes and canals, and the harbour is situated between the islands Zealand and Amager!
I respect their way of tackling with urban issues considering future in a long time span. As a japanese architect, I got a lot inspiration from Copenhagen. We japanese need to learn from this. In Japan, even if we have potential of utlizing ocean area, unfortunately we don't have any sense like them because of lacking considering future, our government only think money and think in a short term.
Those glamorous projects like CopenHill, "green" fashion weeks, etc, are not thought out radically enough. Below those ski slopes, they are still burning garbage. They still use a giant amount of energy. Planners put a lot of thought into figuring out how to enable people to meet their demands in a more sustainable way, but the real question would be: How to undo marketing and social norms, in order to make people think sustainably on the lowest level. Something as radical as abolishing the concept of ownership or status. Instead of debating whether electric energy or hydrogen are better to fuel a "sustainable" SUV, we must figure out how to make people desire to not own or drive an SUV (or any car at all.) Else, we only have some kind of indulgence trade for a small, wealthy elite who can afford building all kinds of futuristic architecture.
So, from all those "green" concepts, one of the few that is actually convincing is to make cities walkable and to reallocate public space from car to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
This place is a dream for developing countries people. We can see this only on screen.
Immigrants trying to impose their backward medieval cultures on progressive western cities will ensure that this won't last.

Copenhagen is awesome on nearly all fronts - except greenery and environmentalism. I mean the country still has Diesel trains running, intense congestion of cars and lack of green areas. While Copenhagens cultural scene is world best, get to Stockholm for a truly green capital city.

The city is absolutely stunning in the older parts but many of the modern districts are absolutely soulless and not many people visit them unless they live there or know someone that does. These structures are really ruining the soul of the city and making for some pretty depressing places in a city that has so much architectural beauty for inspiration.

Not every city in the world can achieve Copenhagen's level of sustainability however it serves as great example how to do things right and better. More green and sustainable approach shouldn't cost more than a dirty one, however that's more of a task for governments and market shifts. At least solar panels got cheaper which is mainly thx to China's cheap production costs. In order to progress green energy and solutions MUST become more attractive from all perspectives including price as dirty energy and solutions r "dirty cheap".

To me the title “renowned architect” is a red flag. In Copenhagen there loads of grey modernist buildings mainly made from concrete and steel. The beautiful part of the city is the historic part like Nyhavn with its colorful traditional buildings. For a city where it’s mostly rainy, windy and grey those modernist buildings make the city quite depressing. The little green that you can only enjoy in late spring and summer do not make up for it either.
Start teaching design in the third grade? In the States that would never fly. I think it's a good idea to be different.

biggest problem of vertical farming are production costs that are way higher compare to traditional farming mainly due to higher wages for qualified workers and expensive technologies used.

No, there are no harmful emissions from these incineration plants. All of that is captured during this process.
The technology has advanced a lot.
I’ve been to the top of Copenhill several times, and I even visited the old incineration plant as a kid before it was decommisioned. Copenhill has no smell at all compared to the old plant, and neither of the plants emitted any toxic fumes or gases, since we can afford modern and safe infrastructure.
The only real points of criticism is that the plant is too big, so we had to import trash to burn, and the skiing thing is a gimmick, the waterskiing track next door gets significantly more traffic.
