Just beautifully drawn & painted! What a lovely memory when your son was young to now have it painted. The hair looks fabulous & I can’t believe that you think you need more practice with painting people. Loved watching it all. Thanks for sharing, cheers 😊💕🥰❤️😍😘
You did a tremendous job, and I mean a "job"!!!!!! The hair was perfect Louise!! What a treasure you have in the painting of your young son now older!!!!!! Bless you!
This honestly looks like a painting by someone who regularly does human portraits. Super useful video to me, too, particularly working through the "ugly bits" of the hair stage, it is such an integral part to stay focused in, and push through. Thank you for the video, all the best to you and your son (as a subject and also filmographer!)
What a sweet boy. It would have been fun to see him as an adult!
Oh my, your new studio is beautiful. And those lovely drawers for paper. Happy for you to have such a lovely, light place to create.
Quite quite enchanting to watch, a skill that I would just love to have. Thank you for giving me such enjoyment.
Oh this was GREAT! You are so good at this I hope you do more portraits. One of your best ever . I really loved this one. Thank you.
Amazing! You’re a pro with the whispy hairs. Beautiful!
Thank you very much. And be sure your video is useful for many, many people. I admire your expertise in watercolor and it's great from you to share it.
Ur lil boy whose ofcourse a grown up now... mst be super proud of u ... his mum
Learnt so much frm this tutorial... thank u.. dear
Luv India
Thank you! I enjoy your videos very much though I’m really striving to become a people and pet artist so I really appreciated this one. Though I might have painted more portraits than you have, this was very helpful. It was a challenging pose, and your work looks masterful!
This looks great! Thank you for the reminder to paint what I see, and to limit my color palette. I’m so tempted to use a lot of colors but I always like my paintings best when I use a limited palette!
Thanks Hannah.
Get Well Soon, Mam...It is pleasure to see you experimenting...Ur a wonderful teacher...god bless u !!
Job well done! I absolutely LOVE your teaching skills! Thank you for sharing YOUR Skill !
Aw I love these bloopers x so funny 😂
I normally hate portraits of children because they are always pictured either smiling wildly or crying uncontrollably. It's as though children are forced into these roles where they exist in the extremes of emotion, as performative objects that exist for the gratification of adults. It's refreshing to see a portrait of a child in repose, a reflective quiet moment in that area between sleep and wakefulness. The morning light is bright and activating, but it's as if your son has not yet absorbed its vibrant energy. Thank you for bringing us along on your journey as you learn.
Thanks so much. 💕
Im relieved to hear a talented artist is as concerned with getting it right so as to not waste the paper. The hair looks great. You are experienced with fur and feathers. Im surprised you didnt feel more comfortable painting hair after face. Wonderful
Thanks Deborah.
It's so beautiful and perfect!!! It's really good yours paintings👏👏👏👏
I wish I had a great workspace like yours.
Sooo lovely and I have seen and learned so many techniques. Thank you ❣️🇨🇭❣️
I love it!!

Lovely portrait! 😍
Excellent tutorial, Louise. I need to paint more portraits, also. Finding the right color mix for the skin is half the battle. This painting of your son turned out really nice. Thank you for sharing your experiences in painting it.

Excellent, thank you🌹
Thank you too!
This was wonderful to watch how you did all the shadows. My eyes don’t pick up everything. Thank you. 😊❤
Beautiful! Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I have no formal schooling in painting or arts for that matter. I just love to draw for as long as I remember and i have to say that I learned so much by just following your tutorials. Thank you! And hope you feel better.
Beautiful portrait Louise! Portraits can be tricky but you seem to be getting the hang of it! A bit off topic here, but you mentioned the soft pressed paper and I FINALLY got my hands on some. I'll let you know how it works out for me! Thanks for sharing your watercolour journey with us!
Love it! Hope you feel better soon!
Thank you Kimberly.
Fantastic job, Louise¡
Thank you Maria! 😊
Love this , excellent work , and I always love your bloopers ( I can relate lol ) 😂❤
Thanks so much Monica. 😊
Excellent 👌... please do more portraits
Beautifully done! The hair is amazing -- I don't know why you think that's a weakness of yours. Love, love the outtakes!!
Excellent, Louise!!! I love the simple color combination you used for the skin tones!!
Thank you very much Lynne. Trying to keep it simple. 💕
That is such a beautiful portrait Louise x Thank you for your time and expertise in showing us how it's done xxx
Thank you Amanda. 🧡
You have done really well with it Louise, I hope you do more portraits. Hope you feel better soon
Thanks very much Jean.
Fantastic job. I like to watch Pam Webers portraits. Also C. Karron And Y. Chen.
Louise, this painting is beautiful! Gorgeous skin tones, amazing hair! What a lovely subject! This is a wonderful work of ART! Well done!!! ♥️👩🎨🎨🖌
I'm glad you like it. Thanks very much Susan.
I love how you did the hair.
Thanks Monique.
Well done Louise. I think you are better at portraits than you think. Hair looks great and realistic to me. I personally wouldn't know where to begin with a portrait but I think from this painting and the one you did of the boy with denim jacket that you are doing very well with portraits.
Oh thank you very much Mary. I'll keep at it. 💕
Love this tutorial Louise, thank you. I'm going to try to paint my grandchildren 😊 . I do hope your bronchitis clears up very soon. Take care 💐
Thanks very much Cheryl.
👌👌👌👌👌👌😍
Louise, As always, another wonderful video. This painting of your son is precious!!
I have taken a couple of watercolor portrait classes from Stan Miller, who also uses a limited palette. His method for teaching us to see and duplicate local color for skin was to create what we thought was an average skin tone using red/yellow/blue, then we had strips of our watercolor paper with a window cut out that we could lay over the part of the photo (or over our own skin) in order to isolate and really "see" the color that is there. We would paint a small swatch of our base color next to the window, and from there we could see if the skin was actually more yellow, red, blue, purple, green than what our original base was. At that point we could pull from our base color and then adjust the bias by adding a bit more blue or whatever to shift the color, comparing with new swatches next to that window. It was very surprising to see just how far away most of the local color was from what I assumed--we aren't nearly as peachy as we think we are!! :) And it's amazing how DARK the whites of our eyes usually are in a photo!! Ultimately, value is more important than matching local color, but this method of isolating a small section of the photo to actually see what was there instead of what we think is there has been priceless--and I have used this method for seeing color and value ever since. I wanted to share, in case this might be helpful for you. (He does have some UA-cam videos in which he demonstrates this.)
Excellent! Thanks so much for this information Shannon. I really appreciate it. I'll be sure to watch Stan's videos if I can find them. 💕
Louise, podría hacer un vídeo con la cara de una niña. ? Me gustaría aprenderlo de usted. Gracias x sus videos. Un saludo desde España.
You are a natural. 😉 If you have done less than five portraits during your artist career, you are amazingly talented. It may not be up to your standards, but that is SO good, also very educational and inspirational. I'm going to do it. It's in my heart, but my brain is afraid. Ha. So, thank you for sharing this. You're the best.
PS: praying for a speedy recovery. 😊🤗
Thank you so much Carol. 😀
Beautiful as usual!
I’m a RN but I like to use more holistic remedies, making a oregano tea with a little lemon and use honey, drink it during your day, tomorrow you ll be talking much better! I hope it helps! I had bronchitis and I had the voice just like yours, im ok now!❤
Thanks so much Elvia. 🥰
This is a very helpful tutorial. I am just starting portraits and they are so challenging. Wondering how you manage long hair. Do you paint from top to end, or do you work from highlight to highlight? I'm a little lost. Seems like short cuts are easier!
Can you please upload any tutorial vdo of hairstyle like yours?
Louise - I saw that brush on our Amazon UK - cost £1,942!!!!! Don't think I'll be getting it for awhile ;-)
Oh lol 😂. I paid $27 AUD from an art supply store in Sydney. That's about £15. 😅
Your painting is wonderful as always! I would have thought getting the skin tone right would be the hardest part, not the hair. It is so surprising what you can create with only four colors.
Can you please post a link to the brush? I can't seem to find it
Normally working in w/c do u do hair b4 face?
Hair is best!!!.... unbelievable you say painting hair is tough for you
