Bucktails are widely used on the surf here in the NY long island area. I use curly tails trailers sometimes but for the most part I use fat cow jig strips, chartreuse split tails are my go to. When stripers aren't biting top water, I use the bucktail and bounce it in the lower column with a jig jig sink retrieve. Any stripers feeding in the bottom go crazy for it.
Here in NJ we lean heavily on bucktails. One added benefit of having a curlytail or porkrind strip is that they help the lure to float in the water column. Dragging bottom is not the best way to fish them. generally.
We used to call them "Bugeye Jigs" back in the 70s & 80s. We used them with an Uncle Josh pork rind strip almost extensively at Sutro Rock at the base of the Cliff House back in the day. Probably THE most versatile lure ever, but way underutilized on the West Coast nowadays...
Fished the rock 70-73 navy 73- 77 back on the rock 77-91,I plugged the bay for last60 years, last ten years no bass over 7 pounds ,did well this year with 41 fish, was a top ten bass fisherman on the rock
@@johndiasjr9000 Me too. I have a few new jars left. Even one with trailer hooks in the strip. They're part of my collection of old fishing gear and lures I've collected over the years that I keep in a glass cabinet...
@@dogsense3773 I started to see the bigger fish population begin to diminish in the late 80s. I believe there are a lot more smaller schoolie sized bass now and not nearly the amount of big fish that we saw back in the day... A 9-15 pound Striper was considered small and a schoolie back then, but by today's standard, those are PBs for most people...
Good stuff . The curly tail grub adds a little action and also slows your sink rate on the bucktail . It also doesn't cast as far . ( a lot of fish will be in the wash anyway) . You might want to try at night ,bass often feed at night and come real close to shore . It makes filming difficult and filming could shut the bite down ... But if you want a chance at a big bass your odds are better at night .
Decades ago, a fisherman neighbor got me fishing again by going for fall Stripers in the Potomac river using Bucktails with curly tails. Worked so well I fished them regularly along the East coast. From that experience I evolved further employing “buck-tail” in Streamer flies & Clouser minnows, fly fishing. Should you master that, your Striper game will be complete & completely rewarding.
Your stripers are derived from hybrids shipped to San Fran long ago.. 1879 Bucktails type lures were used by east coast Native Americans. A company out of Atlantic City stated making what we know as rhe bucktail based on the Natives lure. Bucktails were in survival packages in WW2 . I still have my fathers original package.
The Calif DFG was ordered to rear and release striped bass based on misuse of our States Former Striped bass stamp. To make these bass grow faster, white bass were genetically mixed in. Those hybrids then got blamed for killing to many salmon smolts and were dumped throughout the states waterways to get rid of them. This is how many of Southern California's lakes ended up with these bass which are now considered a pest to the largemouth bass tournament fishery.
I fished the Delta for years mainly around Franks Track. That exact setup in a 1/2 oz was my go to. I caught tons of stripers and 90% of the time it was a straight retrieve. Great job.
Thanks for the link for the bike. I have a friend in Newfoundland that may take advantage of the new bike. They got some killer deals going on right now. Great job fission in the winter months as always pleasure to watch for a guy that lives inland can’t get to the ocean very often.
I remember using a red-headed with a white bucktail rig and added a pork-rind tail (before they had the plastics that you used). We used to fish off the San Rafael Rod & Gun Club Pier for stripers. They worked well!
Interesting, on fish the surf in NJ. Bucktail is the first thing out of my bag 75% of the year. White ones 3/8oz to 2iz depending on conditions w/ otter tails.
Adam, I'll borrow a word used in another comment: 'versatile'. If we are willing to buck what is traditional we can sometimes find success where others fail. Believe it or not I even bring some (bucktails) with me to cast at schoolie size Bluefin and Yellowfin 😊
Nice fish ,I think you get some late fish because the water hasn't fully chilled yet. I know we start getting some females in the delta right now, but there early. January & February we get the big females.
The Bucktail, they used deer tail because the hair is hollow. It swims better in the water column. You Should checkout John Skinner's books & video's. He is an East Coast Fisherman and extremely knowledgeable.
DHF, One thing about you Adam, you are innovator. Nice catch👍! Nice E-bike. Install a rear cargo basket and fishing rod holder to carry some fishing accy and you'll be set. I cook dover fish or halibut soaked in mixed egg then roll it on a corn meal seasoned with Old Bay, then deep fried it until lightly brown ( My favorite👌). Just wondering if the salt water stripe bass taste good, cooked like that also, because bass doesn't have a firm meat also. Thanks for sharing and keep it coming.
Great video it's long overdue, you may want to dedicate a series of videos using the bucktail, but you left out something very important, you don't bring up bucktails without mentioning the bucktail legend, you probably made these videos because you've seen his videos
For 1 oz bucktails, 5" berkley grubs works great. But if I can make a suggestion, try fat cow jig strips 5 1/2" eel or split tails, they work really great and hold up extremely well fish after fish.
Hey Adam. Check out Sport-fishing with Dan Hernandez. SoCal legend on tv for 38+ years. He has bucktails from 1/2 ounce to 6 ounces. Best colors are green/yellow, and all red. 👍
Adam it's so great to see you back on the beach/surf ....But in chest waders and not boarder shorts?? Stripers may be or are likely the top SF coast surf predator. Do you not think a hungry striper would see/strike/eat anything when they are feeding. Does a lure, type or color really matter? Except, maybe for your ADS? But I'm not criticizing you for what pays your bills. I have followed every day from before you left a top base ball team 2nd base position to pursue surf fish in "boarder shorts"!! Tip one for me buddy!!
California Striped bass with the broken lines are white bass genetic hybrids. How did this happen? There used to be a striped bass stamp in California. Striped bass stamp funds were misused for more profitable Waterfowl hunting. CA Rice farmers took money from the DFG to flood fields for hunters. Busted in court, the DFG was then ordered to raise and release striped bass. White bass grow faster than stripers so a genetic hybrid species was created. More than a million of these CA hybrids were released into the CA Delta system, then the DFG claimed striped bass were destroying Salmon runs. This claim was done to get out of the debt and steal CA Delta Water at the same time. The leftover hybrid bass held in rearing ponds ending up being dumped into waterways all over the state including Southern California lakes. Southern California largemouth fishing then grew into a multi million dollar business were the CA genetic hybrid striped bass became a pest. This is why they are killed during southern California largemouth tournaments . If we as Nor -Cal anglers did the same we would be fined heavily for wasting a gamefish. Same fish yet two different laws . Now you know the truth of how California ended up with hybrid striped bass
I don’t see a link for the bucktail jig

I'll have to give that a try!
You whip that rod pretty good, in a more circular motion than a elliptic arc. Love the fishing the surf

That's a good point about dragging the bottom! I'll have to experiment with my lure placement to see what works best.

East coast here I don't leave home without a handful of them, still got some of those original Uncle Josh rinds left stock getting thin tho lol

Not sure, but are bucktails use in fly fishing 🤔,
Also it's hard to find a good hole when it gets cold 😁😁😁

Its been a tried a true lure in the surf and rivers for 50+ years.
That bike can move. When at Pismo they have a 15 MPH. Cool when you can go faster.
I have my dad’s bucktail jigs from the 1960’s
Its a hybrid or they call it a wiper because they are cross breeds of white bass and a striper. At least that what I have heard.

Dan Hernandes uses a B52 bucktail a lot in his fishing shows
And yes that was why it was called a bucktail
What part of CA do you fish? Im central and having trouble getting striper on the surf
Gonna be tougher for you in Central Cal. Unfortunately, you guys don't have nearly the numbers we have up in here in NoCal and SF Bay area...
I am based in the bay area!
Does it come with a rod holder and fish finding sonar?
Haha I wish!
I need to improve my surf game
I’m going to the football game tonight! Hit me up if you’re going!

What rod were you using in this video? Love the vids!
It's a custom rod that might be available for purchase soon!
What’s with the stripes on that striper? Broken lines and all. Is this a west coast striper thing?
I'm not sure!
John Skinner’s secret lure…
Friedman posted one caught in LA around 40 plus inches

@ 🤣 Skinner throws the bucktail every episode 🤣🍻
