Sonnet is the best. I never saw a product that they made that wasn't superior to its competitors. But they are not cheap.
@breezlee59 - I agree Sonnet is the best. But I don't agree it's not cheap, for what if offers it's relatively cheap. It's reasonable
@@morgonaut Unfortunately, in Europe it's 399€ :(
@nebukadnezzar3578 - so then go and buy some cheaper piece of crap and have good feeling you "saved" money
Well explained review. I own one of these and agree it seems to be well built however there are issues. I have found, as have many others, that putting a MacBook to sleep with the dock plugged in, all disks attached to the dock are forcibly ejected when the MacBook wakes up, including the SSD in the internal slot. This is a confirmed issue by Sonnet Tech Support "for some users" (read: many users!) There also seem to be random issues with displays connected to the dock, again upon MacBook waking. It's worth noting that quite a few TB4 docks seem to have this issue with Apple MacBook's sleep/wake cycle and I'm not sure whether this is a dock problem or an Apple Hardware/MacOS issue. Certainly the disks are not forcibly ejected when connected directly to the MacBook. I don't know if there are users of this dock that DON'T have the issue as they tend not to report "everything working well" on forums but I have to assume there are. I'm still working out how to deal with the disk and display issue but it seems that either (a) not putting the MacBook to sleep and just turning off displays; or (b) ejecting the disks before sleep and then re-mounting them on waking seem to be a possible answer - Jettison may help with the eject/mount solution but of course additional cost and additional installed software.
@andyj2106 - look, macOS is well known to have problems with sleep for ages, don't blame Sonnet for Apple's problem. I never sleep my computers = I never have problems
@@morgonaut great. I didn't sleep my MacBook last night either: this morning, the dock had dropped the ethernet connection and all I could do was unplug it from the MacBook and plug it back in again.
I'd be so interested in what throughput you get with the NVMe drive inside the Sonnet via TB4 😉
@nebukadnezzar3578 - well, I thought about doing another live stream where I could test live whatever would people want to see...
@@morgonaut Good idea :)
Great review Morganaut. I hope to see more hackintosh stuff though.
@RashaadSallie - if you wanna see more hackintosh stuff why you then commented on my Macintosh YT channel??? This YT channel is my MACINTOSH related youtube channel. If you want hackintosh stuff then you should comment on my HACKINTOSH youtube channel -> www.youtube.com/@MorgonautHackintosh
@@morgonaut Thanks. Ive been following you for a while but didn't know you had a separate Hackintosh channel - Kind Regards
@RashaadSallie - if you would bother to read my precisely prepared video descriptions you wpud know it 😔
@@morgonaut okay. Thanks.
@RashaadSallie - you're welcome
When she started to say dual I had a little chuckle I never actually considered buying two but that's interesting to think about 😂
@Renull55 - yep 😇 That's why I said that
Amazing Review! Thank you Morgonaut 🤗
@kendallF73 - thank you Kendall 😇
Great Video, would 2 of these be able to push 6x 4K Display?
Thank you for that great video! I have a Macbook Air M3 15", which one can I get in order to use 2 displays (4k) with the lid open? I also have a Dell XPS so if it can work with both, it's even better. Thanks again.
@FranklinColmenaresSilva - this dock will let you run 3 displays on single cable + other displays from your other ports
Hi! Thank you very much for this video and the recommendation of the Sonnet. I wanted to ask you a question, I bought a Mac Mini M4 Pro and I need to use it with 4 monitors. Will the Sonnet Echo 20 work for me? Thank you very much.
@diegochak7560 - in theory you should be able to connect 3 displays to the Sonnet dock plus other at least two displays to the mini
@@morgonaut thank you!
Hi Teresa, Thank you for the review!
I now bought the sonnet echo 20 Thunderbolt 4 super dock and especially because of the 2,5Gig ethernet connection.
We have a 2Gig optic fiber connection and want to make use of that while transferring videos'
Unfortunately the Sonnet does not give me the 2Gig download, it does give the 2Gig upload.???
When connected to the MacBook Pro M3 Max directly I do get the full 2Gig up and down.
Also the M1 mini connected to the same connection does have the full 2Gig up and down.
The reseller of the Sonnet could not explain this and said Sonnet US has to give more insight. So I wonder,
What do you mean by: 'you can get transfer speeds up to roughly 300Mbps'?
Is that both up and down in your experience?
Also, when connected to a thunderbolt port with an adaptor thunderbolt to 2,5 Gig ethernet, I do get both up and down 2Gig 🤷♀
@synergyyoursoundyourvision - it's not limited to upload or download. It's overall throughput. You should noty measure it via internet download/upload but via your local network upload/download :)
@@morgonaut What is de difference between measure on internet and local network?
@synergyyoursoundyourvision - you ask??? Internet speed is based on your plan you purchased, so you reach only speeds you payed for while on your local network you are limited only by your network devices and cables
@@morgonaut Maybe I didn't explain it properly the first time, but my optic fiber internet connection gives me 2Gig up and down. And what I write is that I measure the difference (over and over again) between the Sonnet and a thunderbolt adapter to 2.5Gig ethernet. The Sonnet gives down up to 300 Mbps while the ethernet adapter gives both up and down the full 2Gig.
Thank you for the enlightening review! Do you know if it’s safe for the battery of a MacBook Pro M3 Pro to stay connected to this dock in the long-term?
@a.roberge6193 - life is short and you should not live it in constant fear about your battery health. Enjoy your MacBook and don't care about it :)
@@morgonaut Haha ok, thank you for the advise ^^
@a.roberge6193 - I was like you, constantly freaked out of my iPhone battery, iPad, MacBooks etc. Since I stopped carrying about that I feel much better, free and finally enjoy much more all my Apple devices
what would happen with the controllers when using and connecting 2 x 40gb TB4 cables to the sonnet !?
@artofdao - ?? what do you think would happen? Whole computer would explode or what? 😇 Sonnet is designed to be connected via single cable so I have no idea why you think 2 cables would be better
Excellent review as always 😀 To be perfect, the only thing missing is the 10GbE connection. Have you tested OWC Thunderbolt Pro Dock ? I don't think it's worse, it depends on what you want to use it for.
@jxjm - 10G would need the full bandwidth of Thunderbolt connection so would not run at 10G if it would be shared across 20 ports
Could you comment how hot this hub gets without any NVME installed? Thanks
@5GRobo - it's cold even with disk inside :) Don't forget as I said in this video it's fully metal construction
I've read some horror stories about his doc. We never anymore know what is fake news and what is the truth. Are you still using yours and are you still of the opinion that it is one of the better docs out there? Regarding the speed of the build in nvme port.....is it fast enough to do video edeting from or still netter to use a drive directly plugged into the macbook pro m1?
@stefanusrheeder4162 - I serve on my YT channels only trusted and verified info personally by me! I do all the testing and I stand behind my statements. If you want lies or false info then don't watch my channel. I use this dock every day because it is rock solid and reliable.
@@morgonaut Thanks Theresa. I will buy one. need one to do wildlife video editing. Hope the nvme inside the doc will keep up.
but its only 1 cable meaning sharing 40gb divided by ALL. others have 2 x 40gb cables !!?
@artofdao - haha, you mean more stripes more Adidas? So go, run fast and get the other one 😂
This sounds like a huge bottle neck Especially for nvme drives whether in the dock or attached to it..
@kablah19 - darling I tested that deeply, I use it, it's great! And thanks for your dislike!
Jeez, £400 though 🤕
