If the world was right, he would be huge famous. A young dude who effortlessly combines the best of Bebop, Swing, BLUES, and the rest. He makes it his own, as in I can't find anything exactly like him from the old days, but I find elements of what he does in like 5 different genres. Spectacular player.

Lots of people would be famous if talent was the only criteria for fame, but it's not. Luck and looks are the main factors. Josh has neither, "only" talent. Dude is a great blues player, a little too traditional for my taste though. I like blues influenced music but not King licks over 12 bars, that's just nostalgia sounds not progressive music imo.

I think it’s more about having clear and easy to understand melodies that people can easily relate to, and can grab hold of someone quickly. As great as this style is, it will never be that popular for those reasons. think of David Gilmour’s playing, much simpler, long sustaining notes, easy to understand simple Melodies that quickly grab hold of the listener and are easy for most people to relate to. I don’t think looks play that much of a factor, think of Susan Boyle, Adele, joe bonamasso etc. A player like Neil young doesn’t particularly have a great voice or looks, but has a style that captivates large audiences based on his unique tone and compositions. Large audiences are captivated by a emotional connection they feel towards the music and it’s not just about technical prowess, or complexity, or “talent” as was said.

Greg Koch and Josh playing "Folsom Prison blues" is one of my favorite videos ever.
    I watch it frequently

Great player. So much feel. I saw him and Kirk Fletcher playing together at the Two Rock booth at NAMM a number of years ago.

Great Swing/Western Swing/Jump Blues mashup by Josh Smith. He's one of the greatest at Blues Fusion. For anyone that's interested, please check out his book Modern Blues Guitar Soloing. It covers his Blues/Jazz/Country/Soul Fusion. Also, for anyone that's new to so called Blues Fusion, if you like Josh Smith check out John Scofield, Robbin Ford, Scott Henderson and Greg Koch. Thanks.

Top Five recent modern roots players for sure...the way he dips into Jazz, Western Swing, Country, Blues and even Ragtime is very high level.

Levi, great work at transcribing Josh. Even with near perfect transcriptions, his feel is something you have to ingest, if you want to sound similar to his playing. I love how you can hear the changes in his lines, even though the rhythm section is only playing in his head…smile.
