As a local and an SGU student, I appreciate this video so much! I was extremely enraged when I saw the post because I know there are many more students with that negative mindset.
You have a good mindset, especially in this era of globalization. Survival of closed minded will become tougher and tougher as time goes by. Don't let it bother you too much, just keep focused and take time to enjoy what makes you happy
Thank you soo much Brittany ❤️ you have no idea how much I appreciate all that you do and bring to youtube🌸💯. this was a wonderful thing you do to share this word 🙌🏽🙌🏽
As an expat living in Grenada (born in UK, both my parents are Grenadian) I am SHOCKED by the second post you read out. The level of rudeness and ignorance in that post is unbelievable. Yes, living in Grenada can be challenging but it is very easy to look down on another country, community or culture when you come from a first world country or a metropolitan city like London, New York, Toronto or Paris. That person should really feel ashamed of themselves!
Aw! Thank you so much Brittney for speaking up for my beautiful Grenada. I appreciate your earnest thoughts about this lovely little island. Some people are so closed minded. Grenada is just a tiny island compared to the US. It's so unfair for people to literally compare the riches of America with such a tiny island. That person must be really closed minded. America is not all you see on the screen, but should we go around bashing the US? First of all, Grenada's poverty is only magnified because of it's size. Can we forget Katrina. The world saw some ugly stuff. We had compassion. Seriously though, how can anyone expect to find the same pace of life on a tiny island as Grenada, as that off a huge metropolitan city, let alone the United States of America. Even if you didn't ever travel, common sense alone would tell you tell you that there must be some major differences. Here's to name a few, economic wealth, climatic conditions,(Tropical vs temperate), seasons, location away from the equator, culture etc. Come on now. Educated people understand this. You would think that people would be wise enough to do their research before leaving their home to go to another country to study, and to study medicine. I don't get what people expect to find. Grenada is a rock so why is this person studying on my rock? Why would anyone leave their beautiful sophisticated home and come to this insignificant rock to study. Humm! I wonder why? I like that you embrace difference Brittney . I wish you all the best with your studies. Continue to study hard and become a vet. I'll be praying for you. God bless you.
I'm a Grenadian & have lived here all my life. While I lived most my life in another area, I live in True Blue now. It warms my heart to hear the views of the 1st (original) post. At times I really feel that us Grenadians come 2nd to SGU students. Regarding the 2nd post, while harsh it's still his/her opinion & some points at their core I can understand. One's attitude can be the deciding factor in such a situation, I think if you're going to spend 5 years, thousands of miles away from home, might as well have a good/positive one right? Secondly, if I wanted to be a vet, then that's what I'm going to do. I don't care if anyone doesn't see it as worthwhile. Lastly, I've actually watched a few of your vids before today but I really enjoyed hearing your honest thoughts & opinions. Sorry, I know it's a long post, yet there's so much more I can say. Anyway, all the best in your studies & if I ever see you around, I'll be sure to say hi.
Thanks so much :) Yeah, I know some things can be frustrating and everyone has varying opinions, attitudes, and views. I just don't like when anyone is belittled. But I'm glad it doesn't beat you down when students act this way.
Honestly the first post sounded like pandering to me. I'm a grenadian and as someone who knows how stagnant this place can be I can understand the second person's frustration . He/She might have come from an area better in a lot of ways so they might be frustrated. However some of the points they made were incorrect and they just came off as rude a******.
I'm really loving you vlogs. You're very humble minded and positive and once you have a positive mind you will do well adjusting...I was even considering being a "local friend" like you mentioned. ...especially to help you make local natural orange juice...Lol...I'm glad you can make your vlog to make other New students aware of how it is to live here....keep this up..Girl!!!. ..I'm proud of you. And I love my home!
Just saw this video as a prospective SGU Medical School student who interviewed late last week. This individual is part of every problem we are trying to correct not only in medicine, but in the United States and most of the world. He or she compares everything to where they come from, believing that if you are not at least equal to their culture, then yours is not worth of being considered significant in any way. They feel there is no reason to respect another culture aside from their own if their are not enough people who abide by that culture. That makes them insignificant. They don't have Taco Bell or Pizza Hut so it is a horrible place. This is what encourages racism. This is the way many countries in the world see Americans, and if this person is American, is the type of person that in no way whatsoever represents me, not even by one particle of vapor in their breath. In medicine, we are trying to help physicians become more culturally aware and respectful of other people's cultures. When you go to someone's home, do you say to them, "I have no reason to respect you or your home because your home is nothing like mine, therefore it is insignificant, and not enough people live in this house for me to care"? Of course not. Grenada is a lovely island and is the HOME of 100,000+ people. It sound like this person didn't even attempt to learn anything about the culture or the history of the island. To be honest, I think this person, if they don't learn to change their mindset about other cultures, will be a mediocre physician on their best day. Why? Because being a good physician isn't about how much you know about medicine. It's about how you care for others, no matter what culture, race, religion or otherwise they are. This type of mentality is what is causing the huge rift of divisiveness in our country today. So in conclusion, this is the advice I have for everyone else that is not in this category; JUST STAY FOCUSED. Don't let these words get to you, but just realize these people are out there. Don't let them anger you, because people like this thrive on conflict, and the more aggravated and aggressive the conflict, the more they will attempt to sow more discord. If they are happy with their opinion, it is theirs. Concentrate on who you are, where you are going, and spreading not tolerance, but gaining true understanding, respect and education of other cultures. Because overall, we are not defined by our culture, but by our humanity.
that was sweet.....Grenada ain't that bad its not perfect and yes there are nice people that are welcoming and some again just don't bother with them....i subscribed to your channel cause i wanna see what else you got in to show about us lol it's kindah fun watching it from your point of view i hope the others could of given it a fair chance in embarrassing something new ( :
Exactly. I know my views will be different because I'm not from here, but I try my best to be humble and understanding of other ways of life aside from what I'm used to.
BK just love you for embracing our culture with an open ❤ it really hurts It makes one wonder with so many medical schools in America why Grenada?.I have been living and working in new York for thirtysome. Years and I still haven't gotten used to the way people behave sometimes. No matter where you go there will always be cowardly bigots who choose to hide under rocks.I guess that's why they chose a rock that faraway. That's why healthcare workers get a bad name. Those frogs are really having fun.😁
Of course! I love it here honestly. I know there are quite a bit of vet schools in the US, but I've always wanted to travel so I figured why not apply to schools that would give me the opportunity. Between here and Ross in St. Kitts, I loved SGU and liked Grenada as a whole better when I toured them. But yeah, I know. It's always going to be people with strong opinions everywhere.
Dear Brittney, All peoples and nations have a historical context. Both the USA and Grenada along with many of the islands in the Caribbean were colonies of the British Empire. Knowledge is power. Shaking the pen of knowledge with facts is the best defence against any sword ignorance. The USA had a revolution and a civil war to establish itself as a single nation with an immigrant majority. Those peoples who came mostly from europe claimed that they were fleeing persecution; but were rescued or conquered by armed conflict during the revolution. Grenada along with the other islands in the region are peopled collectively by an African majority who arrived as slaves. The British Caribbean territories were liberated by means of a literary culture and established themselves by constitutional means. The British bore testimony to this fact in this dossier "Mr Theophilus Albert Marryshow visit to State Department Washington DC" [marryshow.name/2016/11/22/mr-theophilus-albert-marryshow-visit-to-state-department-washington-dc/] Therein lies the contrast and definite envy between the USA and the Caribbean. The former nation being born by the gun and the latter by the pen. Is the sword mightier than the pen? Moreover, there has been much interplay of peoples between the territories of the USA and the Caribbean over the centuries. In the British Empire slaves were shipped to the Caribbean from Africa over the centuries; so that in one shipment your brother could have been sent to Grenada. In another shipment your sister could have been sent to the USA. As such, there is no distinction of status between the African slaves in the colonies, what applies to one equally applies to the other. Therefore, despite the nuances between the territories by landscape, plantation owner, treatment, etc the African slaves were all simply fulfilling one purpose and working in the house or the field from sun up to sun down. Reading, writing and such things were forbidden. It is not the first time that people attempt to slander Africans at home or abroad in nations such as Grenada. Here are some proponents and their antagonists: Englishman James Anthony Froude in "The English in the West Indies" [www.amazon.co.uk/English-Indies-James-Anthony-Froude/dp/1546922687] Trinidadian John Jacob Thomas in "Froudacity" [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Froudacity] British-Dutchman Jan Christian Smuts (the orchestrator of Apartheid in South Africa) in his speech at the Savoy Hotel, London Grenadian Theophilus Albert Marryshow in Cycles of Civilization [marryshow.name/2017/05/10/cycles-of-civilization/] whom Dr Hyacinth B. It so happens that Haiti had a successful revolution against France, which was the mightiest army in the world at the time. The Grenadian Henri Christophe among many played a critical role in its establishment. This precipitated France's decision to rid itself of its American possessions and so enlarging America. There is a cultural musical about him to a sell out audience all across America and latterly in England.
