I dont mulch them but it does help them come throught the winter without dessicating too much. Compost bases mulch will also provide nutrients. Hostas can survive extreme cold and prefer to be snow covered in winter.
after cutting them back, how long will it take the hostas to grow back to the size they were at the beginning of your video? I am interested in hosta patriot's, but would prefer to keep them smaller than their full size, wondering if cutting back every so often is a good way to control their size (as well as how they look).
Generally the hostas are cut off in the fall and will grow back in the spring. To reduce their size cut chunks off the roots in the spring with a shovel. But as long as it has room just let it grow👍
Its not nessesary to feed after cutting them back, it may just give them a bit of a push to grow after you have just cut them. I would normally add a bit of compost mulch around them after cutting and mark them so they dont get stepped on over winter.@judyhowell7075

Welcome
Do you mulch the area around them after you've cut them? We frequently get freezing temps and sometimes snow here.
Well I live in Canada and don’t mulch my hostas, so…

Mine hostas are big can I still cut them or wait until summer is over, thanks for the information 😊
You can cut off damaged or scruffy leaves but its best to keep the plant growing until fall before you cut it right back👍
💚✨
What if I want to get rid of the whole plant and not have them come back next winter?
I thought I answered this but its all the same. The roots can be removed and discarded or given away🙂👍

Cutting back just removes that year's growth. It doesn't slow down the growth of the plant, because that year's growth is going to die off anyway.

Would you feed them at time of cutting
