HIMYM Finale Calmly Considered

  • Apologists for the How I Met Your Mother finale usually have the following misconceptions about those who hated it:
    • that we hated the entire episode
    • that we wanted the "Disney" ending, but that we did not understand how things happen in "real life"
    • that we have totally written off Ted coming back together with Robin
We did not hate the entire episode. An article shows that people who hated the finale are actually in the minority (goo.gl/AaK3Jp), but I believe that even those who hated the last few minutes are willing to love the rest of the finale. Some have even said all of it great-even that part where Barney and Robin divorced was fine, really-it was really only that bit with the kids that left a bitter taste in our mouths. Their father had just related how he met their mother, how he was thankful that he met her, and that he wished he had an extra 45 days to spend with her. Even if Ted was still in love with Robin (more on this later) what Penny and Luke said was just not the appropriate response just immediately after Ted said "and that kids, was how I met your mother."
I've read most of what people say about the finale and it all boils down to how we want an unrealistic happy ending. Actually, Ted coming back together with Robin in just the space of a few minutes is actually THE unrealistic "Disney" ending (yes, I understand they've had six years to get back together, but either Ted was such a great actor when he waxed eloquent about Tracy during the last few minutes of his very long story and he was really over her or he was a douchebag to have changed so quickly back). It's on par with Disney making the Little Mermaid end up with her prince.
And if people were so adamant that it shows "real life" then they should have shown all of them (except Lily and Marshall, of course) have STDs.
Finally, there was a way that the Ted and Robin ending up together would have still worked to our satisfaction-instead of showing the one weekend for the whole season they could have dealt with it for just half the season with the mid-season finale ending with Ted meeting the Mother. Then, after showing at least one or two episodes of happiness, show the loss and how Robin (having previously ended her marriage with Barney) eventually rediscovered friendship with the gang, getting close to the kids and finding love with Ted for the remainder of the season. It would have made sense.
Instead, we are left with the impression that Ted never really cared for Tracy really. We get the impression that he only settled for Tracy. We get the impression that kids forget their mothers so easily (so unlike real life, where kids usually cannot get over the death of a beloved parent especially when the death happens when they are young).
IMHO, it was clumsy writing. Not worthy of such a great series. In the end, those clumsy last few minutes just made the entire series pointless. Like Lily said back in Season 5, "you can't just skip ahead to where you think your life should be," even if where you should be is Ted and Robin back together at last.

if you had paid attention from the start you wouldve realized that Tracy died, yes she was mentioned from the start, but Robin was actually there from the start of the series, the only thing that kept them apart, was the fact that their futures were completely different, by the time robin travelled and ted had his kids, robin had divorced barney and ted was widowed, so its not like he saw Tracy as trash, she died and he dwelled on it, Penny and Luke were giving him the go, or would you rather that they live all by themselves knowing that each of their soulmate is out there?

I thought about this for a bit and came back. I'm not talking about the show, I am talking about how naïve your viewpoint is. The children love their father, one assumes they loved their mother, but their mother is gone, and their father is sad, why shouldn't they want him to find happiness with someone else? BTW cowardice is never moving on, staying buried in memories. Are you in your 20's or younger?

I totally agree with you. I have always wanted Ted and Robin to end up together, but considering the show's name, this season should've been more about Ted, the mother and how he got back together with Robin. In stead, the season was spent watching every moment leading up to a wedding that didn't last longer than about 15 minutes. Despite how much I love the show, I must say I was disappointed. However, I'm glad we got to see at least a little bit of how the mother fitted into the group :)
When Ted was talking about what true love really is, and that you never stop loving them, he's talking about never letting them go. He never let Tracy go - he lost her. She died. Six years later, he realised that he wanted to get back together with Robin, and I think that's fair. Are you supposed to grow old miserable and alone because your spouse dies? I think not.
    Great video, though :)

Wow, just wow..... Moving on after the death of someone you love does NOT mean you stop loving that person, ever. It means you find what happiness you can with someone else that you love.

i completely agree. i would agree if ted just moved on from tracy cause he always loved robin but he didnt. the love of his life died and he eventually moved on after so many years. i think it showed that both him and tracy loved more than one persom. she loved ted but there was always a place in her heart for her bf who died too soon from her and no one can take that place just like no one can replace tracy in teds heart. not even robin.

I agree and disagree with you. Ted didn't treat Tracy like that. Tracy was his ONE. Not Robin( Swarkles forever). But they would have explained better why Ted loved Robin and make him just think what would Tracy say if she saw this

I agree with you: Tracy was his ONE. The story led up to that. The producers were just constrained by the ending they created back in the 2nd season and undid their excellent story just to make that recording work.
I think Ted could have loved Robin again, don't get me wrong. But not the Robin that was in that ending. You know, not with the "rare sighting" Robin. If they had presented Ted as telling his story over a long period and also showed how, as he told it, he was falling in love again with Robin, then the ending would not have been as jarring.
But they didn't do it. It's worse than Deus Ex Machina. It's worse than the "and he woke up and it was all a dream" ending. I just wish they didn't waste time doing an entire season of just the wedding and did it properly.

Actually, they did do it. And they way they did it, by dropping several clues and hints throughout the series, ties in to the entire premise of the story, namely that Tracy had in fact been dead for six years and that Ted was moving on while also having reconnected with Robin for six years. Ted basically told this story to explain why he and Robin were so close with one another and wanted to gain his kids' effective approval to date Robin again, while assuring Penny and Luke that he would always love Tracy 'till the end of his days', no matter what.
I do agree that they should not have focused almost an entire season on the wedding with so little emphasis on the latter storylines, but it must be borne in mind that HIMYM was supposed to end after season 8 and Tracy wasn't even meant to have as big a role as she did. When CBS ordered a ninth season it took a great deal of compromise from all sides to make it happen especially since Jason Segel didn't want to do it anymore. I think the writers wanted to experiment by giving more attention to the wedding since it was also where Ted met Tracy. But they ended up convoluting things far too much and were crunched for time in the end. Some episodes could actually have been scrapped in favour of more storyline development in that respect.

If you had actually paid attention from the start then you would realize that Tracy wasn't in the story until season nine. It's like when you read a book and everyone keeps talking about someone and then they finally show up a few chapters in. Also, the marriage didn't fail, SHE DIED. At best you have a very surface level opinion of the show. At worst, you're just a little brat who didn't like Ted and Robin together, and never looked at how that was the only real way it could have ended.

I agree with u man. The ending sucked and they barely pains any attention to Tracy. He is a fucking coward!

... and you know what? They should have tried really, _really_ hard to explain how that pineapple got there.
It's like an itch on the toe of a leg that has been amputated decades ago (gone but still there).

The full DVD has details about the pineapple...Ted had stolen it from the Captain's house in New York. This is proven by the fact that there was an identical pineapple at his house in Farhampton.
